Q&A: Dog with a musty smell, tried everything!?

Question by Confuzzed: Dog with a musty smell, tried everything!?
Alright, I’m getting a little tired of this musty – basement smell coming from my dog. I figured she was allergic to fleas (or flea bites) so I’ve always used Frontline. Doesn’t seem to work in the summer very well. Took her to the vet and he said it’s allergies to flea bites.. yada yada and gave her a shot. Well I have been using this oatmeal soothing shampoo for her (for itchy, irritated skin) and it works for about a day – then back to itchy itchy. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about this through the years – but what is the cure here? I do not want to over-bathe her and the shot NOR Frontline seems to help. It’s not her food, I tried switching last year and went through all of that and nothing helps the scratching! (Also, I’ve tried different beddings to see if it was that – no change. Different laundry detergents – no change). I just don’t get it!
Add: What’s odd is it doesn’t seem to bother her. She seems to enjoy scratching for some odd reason. It’s never the ears – it’s usually the small of the back (which I hear of a lot w/ allergies).
Thank you!! I will try that oil and even the shampoo. I’m willing to try anything. I asked my vet about any skin tests to determine what she’s allergic to and he couldn’t do that. I also checked around my area and can’t find anyone. I think we’ll be making a trip very soon to someone who CAN do the test! Thank you all!!

Yes. There is something you can do. Ask your vet to run a full panel for allergies. Find out exactly what the dog is allergic to. If he/she does not have the means to do this, see a canine skin specialist.

Often it is simply something in the food you are feeding and/or different grasses/pollens. There are steps which can be taken by changing a few things and getting the correct medication.

Good luck.

Can anyone help – I have tried everything!!?

Question by clairez23: Can anyone help – I have tried everything!!?
My dog Jake has been suffering with skin infections for the last couple of years on and off and we don’t seem to be getting anywhere with the vets. They just keep prescribing him antibiotics which clears it up to be bearable in the short term but it keeps coming back. We recently paid out to have allergy tests done which seem to show he is allergic to everything except lamb and rice but even after changing his diet; couple of months on and still he is suffering. They have basically now drawn a blank and I don’t know what else I can do. He is affected mostly on his stomach but particularly his sheath – that is the most sore and swollen – sometimes so bad that he has discharge and cannot retract the penis. His coat condition is good and his gums, ears, eyes etc are fine it is just this repeated infection of the sheath and stomach. Can anyone help – I am open to all suggestion, even vitamin supplements or holistic approaches. Oh and he is a 7 yr old GSD/ retriever x..Thanks! xx
The tests showed that he was allergic to all meats except lamb, turkey and fish and also wheat and soy bean. In addition he is also allergic to dustmites but nothing else other than that. I have had four different vets see him and they all just say that skin infections are common in GSD breeds. Thanks for all of your responses and will keep trying x

Home made raw diet. Problem will go away completely in 3-4 weeks.

Why am I allergic to EVERYTHING? :(?

Question by little_bita_curry: Why am I allergic to EVERYTHING? :( ?
I’ve got a problem that my mom has too. We’re allergic to the most random stuff, but it isn’t simple because there are a lot of things that don’t fit certain categories. For example, here’s my list of allergies:
Mosquitos, Apples, cherries, lemons, kiwi, deodrant, shavers, carrots, plants, grass, hay, animal spit/claws, milk, lipgloss, metal (i’m sure there is more but i lost track)

1. Mosquitoes-they swell up 3 times bigger than most peoples bug-bites do and they turn into a big red bump. (Plus they are attracted to me because I’m blond? is that a myth??)
2. Metal-ever since i got my ears pierced when i was like…9, my ears get peely and gooey and very itchy. We’ve tried hypoallergenic metals but they all do the same thing. so far it has calmed down to the point where i can wear rings but rarely necklaces. and my earrings and nose ring are a special metal.
3. Fruit- I’m allergic to most fruit, like apples and cherries, but I’m not allergic to grapefruit, oranges, bananas, avocado, things like that. I’m not allergic to berries either, only fruits. What happens is my throat and sinus’ swell up and i constantly have to swallow. it burns and my jaw gets itchy. Also the first time i was allergic to the apple i got a big water blister on my lip.
4. Kiwi- kiwi gets a category all on its own. When i have kiwi my mouth starts watering and it burns really bad and the entire surface of my tongue burns off and i bleed.
5. Carrots- I just found this one out the other day. i get the same reaction as i do with fruit only not so bad.
6. Animals- I get a reaction when most dogs and cats lick me, my skin turns red and there’s little white itchy bumps. I’m allergic to their fur too.
7. Plants and stuff- This ones just regular allergies, kind of like the animals, pollen, hay, grass makes me super itchy.
8. bath products- makeup remover, lotion, creamy part on the razor, deodorant…All of these things make me itchy and i either cannot use them or i have to find the super hypoallergenic things.
9. Milk- I’m lactose-intolerant but not severely.
10. Lipgloss- another product. makes skin fall off my lip like its never going to end.

I know if you’re reading this then you probably think i’m just some crazy germ-a-phobe weirdo. Thats what i thought about my mom too until i just in the last couple years got all of the same allergies.

Pleaaase :) If you have ANY idea why all of this stuff reacts to me in ways it shouldnt, please share!
Oh! i forgot! i’m also allergic to almonds and recently hazel nuts. i get the same reaction with those as i do fruits and carrots.

u seems to be sensitive to basses and acids. the type that naturaly protect the food items from bacteria and whatnot. im sensitive to the protective oils in pacific salmon( my face swells when i eat it) but not to atlantic salmon. i can eat fresh water fish but not salt water fish.
ur allergic to the bassy oils on animals and fish and in milk, but are also allergic to the acids in vegtables and fruit.

it might be somthing with ur diet or lacking somthing in it. if u are dieting it may be the cause. starving urself (if u do) or eating the same food all the time can cause the immune system to become weak. try and find food that u can eat that will boost ur immune system and u will at least reduce the allergies or at least there how severe they are.
boosting the immune system can get rid or reduce of the allergies to:: mosquitoes, metal, fruit, kiwi, carrots, animals,.

or if ur a vegitarian. then that might be the reason ur allergic to everything.lack of meat can make it so ur body can’t heal ifself.

the choices are proper diet or medication in ur situation. and i would prefer the diet myself.

Question by paleozoictraveler: Is there an inexpensive way to feed a dog that’s allergic to everything?
My dog is allergic to the following: Pork, turkey, soy, peanuts, most kinds of rice, dairy products, and tobacco smoke, and every variety of grass, excluding corn and wheat.
It costs a fortune to feed her, and the above items are just them most serious of her 3-page allergy list! When she comes into contact with an allergen, she loses her fur and her skin breaks out in bloody leisions. Her moth bleeds and she gets indigestion really bad. We currently feed her Purina One Sensitive, but is there a brand that doesn’t cost as much?

Question by Roxy: My 2yr. old basset hound refuses to eat almost everything we put in front of her, what is wrong with my dog?
This poor dog had her food changed on her 7 times since May. She had terrible allergies that finally subsided after we found a good holistic dog food(and one that she actually liked). We made the mistake of not changing the food gradually, but she hadn’t had any stomache achs or diarreah…she seemed fine until last week when she refused to eat ANY dog food at all. We gave her treats and some table scraps, just so that she’d have food in her,and she ate that no problem. Well she no sooner stoped eating the scraps,so I grilled some white meat chicken, and mixed it with rice…she ate that for 1 day, and is now refusing to eat that at all.She will (hardly)eat one thing one day and not the next. She is getting very skinny, and extremely lethargic day by day,now even her gums are pale. She is going in to the vet very soon, but in the meantime what can I do for her, and does anybody know what this is? Is she sick, or did we just completely mess her up with all the food changes recently?

It sounds like all of the food changes may have her terribly confused. It is good that you are taking her to the vet soon (hopefully VERY soon), but in the mean time try feeding her a high quality canned dog food. Canned food comes in several different flavors, so maybe you could give her a different flavor each day.
