Question by paleozoictraveler: Is there an inexpensive way to feed a dog that’s allergic to everything?
My dog is allergic to the following: Pork, turkey, soy, peanuts, most kinds of rice, dairy products, and tobacco smoke, and every variety of grass, excluding corn and wheat.
It costs a fortune to feed her, and the above items are just them most serious of her 3-page allergy list! When she comes into contact with an allergen, she loses her fur and her skin breaks out in bloody leisions. Her moth bleeds and she gets indigestion really bad. We currently feed her Purina One Sensitive, but is there a brand that doesn’t cost as much?

Question by Cash & Gage’s Mom: We feed our 2 female (manchester mix and aussie mix) Blue Buffalo and we used to feed our male (pit bull mix)?
the same thing. He all of a sudden would vomit the food up right after he ate it so we stopped feeding it to him. We started on Blue Buffalo in the first place because he had skin allergies that he would get ichy bumps on him and lose the fur around it. They cleared up immediately with the food. But now that we switched him to iams he doesn’t vomit but his allergies are back. Do you know of any good brands for allergies? I hear it is the corn in the dog food that they are allergic to. Thats what our vet said.

Iams is chuck full of allergens, fillers and nasty by-products.

Q&A: How do I feed my dogs raw food?

Question by Ashley: How do I feed my dogs raw food?
Okay, after food allergies and ear infections and skin problems, my husband and I have decided to switch to our dogs to raw food. I’ve done a little research, and I know the benifits and the risks. I think boosting my dogs overall health with raw food outweighs the risks, and I also think the continued health problems I’ve been having with dry dog food is ridiculous and more harmful than switching them to raw food. That being said, I need advice on exactly HOW to feed them the raw food’. We’ve decided on these meats: chicken, beef, turkey, pork, and fish. I read online that we should feed them 2 to 4 percent of their weight. So, among other things I need to buy today, a food scale will be one of them. I needed one for cooking anyway. We’ll probably start with 2 percent, because they’re both a little porky. I also know not to feed them grains, like corn. The only vegetables the article mentioned was pumpkin. The article also said, when switching to a raw diet, we need to introduce only one raw food per week. One week introduce chicken, one week introduce beef, etc. Once all foods have been introduced, we can go ahead and vary their diet throughout the week. So, we’ll start with chicken this week. We just ran out of dog food, so no better time to start than now. We’ll be going to the store and a butcher today to get the beef and chicken we’ll need for the next two weeks. I need to know what vegetable to feed them along with the meat, and what the meat to veggies ratio should be. One of my dogs is sleeping on the floor near me, farting right now, and I hear that raw diets help with that kind of smell. I sure hope so. His farts smell like rotten cheese. Anyway, I need to know the ratio of meat to veggies, and what about bones? I know the bones need to be uncooked, to prevent splintering, and meaty. Should I include the bones and veggies in the 2 percent weight of their food, or should I only weight the meat and take away an estimate of the bones? Or am I overthinking this too much? Anyway, if nothing else, I need advice on the veggies. What kind and how much. Thanks in advance!!

Oh, and like I said above, I know the risks of a raw diet, so if raw opposers want to post their opinions on the raw diet, nothing you say will convince me not to switch to raw food. Your comments will be ignored. So don’t waste your time.
If you would have read my “fairy tale” then maybe you would have been able to answer my question instead of giving me a totally useless answer. Luckily, some people on here actually read it and are giving great answers, unlike you.
Just to clarify, I was talking about eurometrix. All the other people are helping. : )

Dog section. We decided to feed our dogs raw?

Question by Sammy Gabbie GO VEGAN!: Dog section. We decided to feed our dogs raw?
I’m reading so much information, listening to a lot of videos, etc. I’m trying to determine what to feed my dogs on their first day of raw when we do make the switch in the next couple of days. We are flat broke right now(thanks to a hefty recent vet bill). I was able to determine a food allergy. We only have chicken legs, chicken thighs, and salmon.

All this info and videos have contrasting information..although much is very helpful.

My dogs are a Miniature Poodle mutt and a Toy Poodle. What and how much should we give them? Thanks to all who answer, and no, I won’t be TDing anyone.
Some people say to switch gradually, and some say right away. I want to do it right away, so as to immediately start the detoxification. My dogs have had quite a variety in their diets, so a sudden change shouldn’t adversely affect them.
I will, however, report any “answer” that’s not an answer to my question, so no spammers.
Say if you give a dog too much meat. Will it leave some if it’s full?
I didn’t think Poodles blew coats…

I have adult dogs come in and out of my life on a pretty regular basis and all of them eat raw while they are with me.

What I do is a 24 hour fast and then give the dog chicken as the first raw meal. I go 5 or 6 days before offering them another type of meat. Usually I remove the skin for the first couple of raw meals of chicken as it seems to be more conducive to diarrhea. Chicken legs and thighs are fine. I feed once per day.

You want to feed about 2% of the dog’s adult weight per day – on average – so one day a bit less and the next day a bit more is fine. You’ll learn pretty quick how to judge what meat weighs.

My dogs like their chicken COLD — half frozen and icy. Some dogs like it warm.

Good luck!

Does anyone feed Wellness Super 5 Mix?

Question by Bordeaux: Does anyone feed Wellness Super 5 Mix?
My dog is about 14 months old, almost 26 pounds and very active. He was diagnosed with environmental allergies about 1 month ago. A little over 2 weeks ago I switched him from Purina ProPlan shredded chicken to Wellness Super 5 Mix Whitefish and Sweet Potato formula after much research and cost/benefit analysis. This formula is also supposed to help dogs with allergies. He was doing fine on the Purina, but his constant itching and little skin rashes got me worried he might be allergic to something in that formula even though the vet assures me he does not appear to have food allergies.

He ate the Wellness food for two weeks with no problems at all. Yesterday he threw up all of his morning meal 1 hour after eating and then vomited again at around 1 pm. I took him to the vet, and after the examination, x-rays, and a $ 250 bill I was sent home with a diagnosis of “gastritis.” Besides a huge lecture about how the “trendy” foods are not any better for the dog than Iams or Purina, the only thing the vet had to say was that the food had nothing to do with the vomiting episodes. So he has an upset stomach with no known cause.

Could he be reacting to something on the food? Has anyone here ever fed this food and had the same experience? The dog is a little sleepy and tired today, and he has done a lot of licking his lips and gulping, but he has not vomited again. No diarrhea so far either.
Blunt Object: Unless you are feeding your dog homemade food that you grow yourself, you are also making decisions based on advertising and marketing. Before implying that I’m a sucker, you should think about your own decision-making process.

As for the other answerers, he was not switched gradually because he had been switched from Iams to Purina cold turkey without any problems before. If that was the problem, wouldn’t he have started vomiting within 1 or 2 days?

And yes, he could’ve eaten something odd, but nothing showed up on the x-rays so the vet really didn’t think that was the case. I caught him licking a chocolate wrapper the day before, but I am 100% sure there was no chocolate left. Could just a whiff of chocolate have this effect on a dog? I can’t believe it would…
