Help! My dog is scratching all his hair out!?

Question by : Help! My dog is scratching all his hair out!?
We’ve had our little guy for about seven years, got him from a pound. He’s a mix, mother a chihuahua, but we don’t know what his father was. He’s black and really adorable, but for the last year or so he has be REALLY itchy all the time! He scratches every few minutes, and chews on himself a lot.
There was a time when he had scratched all the hair out on his back, but that grew back, but his chest and neck is still completely bare, even extending to his shoulders!
Sometimes he even gets bleedy spots and scabs! His skin is kind of dry, but it didn’t used to be like that. Sometimes it gets flaky, too. If he sits on my lap (as he is right now), and scratches, when he gets up it looks like he has ‘snowed’ on me.
I love my little boy very much, and I don’t like to see him uncomfortable. We’ve taken him to the vet several times, and tried fish oil and various shampoos, but he’s still itchy. Our house does not have fleas or ticks, and neither does he. He’s always really smelly, too. The vet says he has allergies . . .
To dust! How can we get rid of all the dust in our kind of big house?! In fact, the vet wasn’t even SURE what all his allergies were.
So what can we do to make him more comfortable, other than the impossible, and help his hair grow back?

Question by brn2bebritish657: My 2 dogs are having hair coming off the skin in big chunks. Explanation?
Hi.. so before everyone starts, if this problem persists I will take them to the Vet, currently it does not seem life threatening though.

The first time I noticed this problem was just 2 weeks ago when my 1 year old German shepherd had about 1 inch diameter piece of skin/ fur come off. There was very little blood, it was like someone shaved her almost. We thought it was that she just scratched herself somewhere and didn’t consider it much.
Next she is coming up with small patches on her nose, and muzzle, also behind her ears.
Since she has food allergies I thought this was just a reaction to the food we just switched her on until my second dog (border collie 7 years old) just had a lump on her head and a tuft of hair came off. Her skin was bleeding, but not excessively.
Does anyone have a clue on what this might be? and specifically what is it caused by?

Thanks so much

Without being able to examine your dog, I’d guess mange or ringworm. Both conditions would need vet care.

Q&A: need help with hair loss in my dog?

Question by Ann G: need help with hair loss in my dog?
my dog has been suffering form hair loss since last spring. It started on her belly and arms and keeps spreading up her chest and around her arms and legs. It is very symmetrical from side to side. She also has little skin tags wherever she loses her hair. I have had her to the vet and a dermatologist and they found nothing. We did find one flea on her but if she had a allergy to them that would be over by now wouldn’t it. The vet seems to think it is just the breed or bad genes but I don’t want it to get worse. I was noticing that the area she goes to the bathroom outside is very wet in the spring and does not drain the best. Could she be stepping in too much pee from the winter as the snow melts. Also, awhile ago not sure when though when I was putting water softener salt in the water softener I dropped a few pellets and before I could pick them up she was over there. I don’t know if she ate one but if she did could she have ingested too much sodium and had a reaction to that. We have tried different foods to see if it helps and are giving her a vitamin A supplement via dermatologist. Anyone have any ideas what else it could be. She is such a cutie I don’t want her to go bold. Open to any ideas. Thanks for looking.

Question by Kellee .: My dogs hair falls out and the skin turns black?!?
Back in December I adopted my now 10month old pitbull mix and she had three spots on her that did not have hair, it was all in a row. They are about a dimes size in diameter. Later on, about 2 days, the skin where there was no fur turned black.

I took her to the vet, they did blood work, and said they didn’t know. Charged me $ 200. They said it might have happened before I got her, by crawling under a chain link fence or something.

Well, yesterday I noticed on her other side there was about a quarter sized patch of hair gone.. And this morning I woke up and it is black.

Is it allergies? Hot Spots? I have no clue. I will not take her to the vet just to receive a pointless, outrageous bill.

Please help me.
She doesn’t itch at all.
It’s like it just scabs up all of a sudden, and falls out.

Look into a canine dermatologist. I understand that is the last thing you wanted to hear but a specialist will be your best bet and believe it or not they are not that much more expensive.

Don’t waste anymore time with your existing vet.

Question by Construction Chick: My dogs are eating their hair and their poop looks like a wig!?
I have two 6 month old West Highland Terriers. Both are from the same litter. I noticed last week one of them started itching and she has a tiny patches of hair missing legs.

Now her sister has joined in on the fun! Same condition. These aren’t my first dogs so I am aware that there is the possibility of skin problems.

Their dog food is all natural with no corn, soy, etc. The spots are just hair loss – no “hot spots” or crusty lesions. We live in New England and it is dry & cold right out so I was thinking it wasnt allergies to food. We wash them every month or so – brush them and powder them as you should do with a Westie.

Yesterday I noticed that their poop looks like they ate a vaccuum cleaner bag. It is FULL of hair, which I am guessing is theirs from licking and biting the area.

So what else could be causing this? I am stopping by my vet to pick up an elizabethan collar tonight. Is this hairy poop ok? Can it cause problems? This scratching is making me nuts!
HA HA Montgomery! That would give us a visual representation of $ hit Head! Thanks for the new money making idea! ;)
No fleas – Yuck! I know what those look like! :( We live in the city so there are no wild animals (except my boyfriend, he he) Maybe it is a grass or “fragrance” allergy?
