Question by Becca: Help my 8 year old Pomeranian dog keeps peeing in the house!?
I just recently adopted a rescue dog from the pound about 3 months ago now. He is a real sweetheart and was already create trained and house trained. The previous owner was in a nursing home and died, which is the only reason the family gave him up.
With that said, when I got him everything was fine. He is fixed as well. Recently I keep having to take him to the vet. He started going in the house when he was on pain medicine for his ankle which he sprained from jumping (hes a pom…they do that). Then I found out that he was allergic to chicken/fish/corn. So now he is on a special diet. When I first switched him he would poop and pee in the apt. Now that the food allergies is taken care of he stopped and everything was fine.
However recently he started going again (just peeing). I don’t understand. I take him out about every 3-5 hours depending on my schedule and working full time I can’t during the day so he is in his crate. He is fine there, and I take him out as soon as I get home, but after that he keeps going randomly in the apt.
He is very scheduled when he can go. I let him out as soon as I wake up 6am, before I leave for work…around 730 as soon as I get back from work, 6ish, then at 9/10 and then before I go to sleep around 12. Lately he is barking in the middle of the night around 3 AM and wants out because I crate him at night. I have to crate him at night because if I don’t he pees and poops in the apt.
He was fine at first and now I don’t understand. I just would hate to have to take him to the vet again when he has been there 2 times in the last month!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just feel bad when I yell at him saying “Bad Dog” because he starts shaking, runs into his crate and won’t come out… :-/

Since he is an older dog, there is a good chance he may be developing bladder problems. Take him to the vet for a check-up.

I have 2 pugs and they shed like crazy! Help!?

Question by John S: I have 2 pugs and they shed like crazy! Help!?
Are there any new solutions to the problem of shedding? They are my wife’s so don’t give me crap about how I should have researched the breed before I got them. These dog’s seem to blowout their coats daily. We bathe them once a week and brush them twice a week with the furminator, but it doesn’t seem to take more than 24 hours before the entire floor is covered in dog fur. We even bought a roomba just to help us keep up with the fur. We make their food with chicken, oats, and veggies. They don’t seem to have any allergies or skin problems. They’re both 19 pounds and the vet says they look great and its obvious we take good care of them. Anyone come up with any great shedding solutions? I don’t want to brush them everyday because it can irritate their skin.

Brushing them daily with a softer brush than the furminator will help, while still using the furminator twice a week. Unfortunately, the pug breed just naturally sheds a lot.

Add: If you are using a good, moisturizing shampoo then bathing weekly isn’t a problem for dogs. It’s too bad the makers of Relief/Hylyte went out of business because they were both really good shampoos. Ultragroom is another good one that I, personally, like the scent of.

Q&A: Things to help with puppy allergies?

Question by Christiesteezy: Things to help with puppy allergies?
I’m pretty sure one of my puppies, Alfie, has allergies. He itches but I don’t see any inflamed areas or bumps or parasites so I think it’s allergies. I think it might be because the previous house he came from was tiled and I have carpet so it could be my carpet but he is upstairs most of the time and we haven’t had our carpet cleaned upstairs (so it can’t be cleaning solutions) but could he just be allergic to carpet?
Also I really want to help him and his itchiness so I considered the food. I will be purchasing some better quality food soon. But I wonder what I should get? I’ve heard of grain free food is good and also some dogs are allergic to chicken? So then what should I be looking for in the food?
Are there any tips that anyone has from experience?
And I will be taking him to the vet but I can’t until the 15th because of my lack of income and transportation at the moment.

Have you checked him for fleas? When I got my two dogs as puppies, the lady told me she picked off a few fleas from them. I bathed them in the sink with liquid Dawn dish-washing detergent a few times. It didn’t seem to work, but I think you’re supposed to let them soak for awhile. The very next day when I took them to the vet, they got a flea treatment and haven’t see another flea on them since. For the food, grain free is really good, raw food is another option as it helps greatly for dogs that are allergic. You can try foods that have fish, venison, or lamb. If you go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com click on index (lower left side) and look up the food you’re feeding him, that will give you an idea if it’s good or bad.

Question by pattil: My dog has a rash…any help with ideas what might be causing it?
My 6 year old Brittany Spaniel has had a strange rash on his belly and inside of his thighs. He does have terrible allergies to fleas, certain foods, etc. We did an extensive food allergy testing when he was a year old and he’s on a diet I cook for him…no grains, only fish and a few other ingredients. We don’t use chemicals in our house or on him (no flea treatments or dog soaps, just sulfate free all natural soaps). He did have a flea on him about a month and a half ago while we were out of town and got a bite that caused a slight rash with itching. That healed up but this “rash” is different. It looks like chicken pox. At first I thot ring worm, but it’s not that. It looks like what an ant bite looks like on a human, but there’s about 20 of them. I can’t figure out what’s causing it. The vet says just put him on prednisone and antibiotics. I did do the antibiotics but not the predisone. There’s no itching or discomfort at all from these bumps/rash. Any ideas?
I chose not to do the prednisone because I want to find the source first…I’m all for the steriods as I know it can help, but I’d like to know the cause first :)

If you dog just had a shot just recently he might be allergic to that. Many dogs have been having allergic reactions to shots. Also it seems like you dog is allergic to many things so he might have gone outside and rubbed against the grass or a plant that made him react. Have you changed something like your shampoo, body spray or lotions?Or he might have eaten something. My dog had something like that but he got it when we cleaned our carpets. Hope it clears up well.

Help with a weird looking bug bite?

Question by Amelia X: Help with a weird looking bug bite?
I have this weird bug bite on the back of my left leg. I think it’s from a mosquito, since I saw one right before I got bit. I’ve had it for a couple of days and the skin around it developed a red, blotchy rash. Around that is a thick, pale ring. So, from the inside outward: bug bite, red rash, pale ring. It looks like the exact opposite of this, with the red and white reversed: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8e/Bullseye_Lyme_Disease_Rash.jpg
Also, the bite is a bit smaller.
It DOES NOT look like a bulls-eye, so I’m pretty sure I don’t have Lyme Disease. Also, I have multiple bites like this, but the one on my leg is the worst (I got them all in one night, so I’m pretty sure they were from the same type of bug). From the middle of the mosquito bite to the edge of the white ring, it is almost 1 1/2 inches.
All of the bites have swelled up pretty big. They’re itchy and are sensitive to the touch. I have no other symptoms, except a sore throat that I got the same night I was bitten (however I think this might have just been allergies, and the sore throat is almost completely gone now).
I have very sensitive skin and I’m allergic to quite a lot (pollen, honey, dogs, mold, etc.) However, none of my allergies are fatal. Do you think maybe I got an allergic reaction to the bite? I’ve gotten mosquito bites years ago and they didn’t look like this! Could I have devolped some type of allergy to it?
The swelling seems to be going down a bit, but after that I noticed a white ring. I just want to make sure this isn’t serious or anything. If anyone has any ideas of what could be causing this, or some pictures, I would be very grateful. Thanks!
It looks exactly like this, but with a white ring around it. http://www.skinsight.com/info/files/image_upload/Bite1%20copy_2_0.jpg
