Question by Me: Good food for Cocker Spaniel dog (that helps avoid ear infections)?
Hi I just got a Cocker Spaniel dog. She does not have any problems but it appears that Cocker Spaniels are prone to ear infections. I have been reading websites about this and it seems that certain foods exacerbate the problem (make the problem worse).
With all of the reading I have done in the last few days I can’t remember what I had read. I think it is supposed to avoid certain ingredients (like fish? Or corn? I can’t remember if it said those were good or bad ingredients) due to allergies or unfavorable bacteria that is present in those foods.
I can’t find what I read but I would like some recommendations on good food for Cockers, specifically to fight against ear infections.
Thanks.

Any dog with long ears are subject to this. It is known as “Cocker ear” because it is so highly associated to the Cocker Spaniels. You would do good if you got some good ear wash & washed the inside of her ears at least once a month to prevent ear infections.
The formula for an ear wash that a Vet gave me is
1 part water
1 part apple cider vinegar
1 part rubbing alcohol
This is very good to use to clean ears on a regular basis but is not good for a dog who has an infection. It burns like crazy if the ear is infected.
I groomed for 15 years & used it all the time on all the dogs I groomed.

Question by Wake N Bake Girl: How do you get small dogs to eat medicine and what helps with allergies?
I just adopted this little chihuahua out of a really horrible shelter, and he’s in really bad shape. He’s extremely skinny and seems to have a skin condition of some sort. The vet says its allergies, but underneath his arms his irritation seems to also be from the harness they made him wear 24/7. he has the rash on his neck as well. the vet said to give him fish oil [which he loves], and then benedryl to help with the itching. I didnt want to give him any benedryl, but he seems to be itchin up a storm [a snow storm lol], so i went out and bought some, but he wont take it. giving him only one half ata time of course, i tried putting it in bread, but he wasnt fooled. i tried crushing it up and putting it in bread…no dice. any ideas? hes kind of a picky eater =\
thanks for all your help guys! my vet told me to give cholo half of a 25 mg pill once a day until the fish oil starts doing its job and he’s not so itchy. im sure whatever they were feeding him in that shelter wasnt nearly as good as what im giving him now because his coat already seems to be looking better. he gladly ate my laced cheese treat, so thats for all the ideas. once he gets the hang of that, im sure i’ll have the move on to peanut butter ;] thanks all

you might have better luck with the liquid and use a syringe to give it to him. did you try the flavored tablets? my little one likes the grape flavored benadryl. otherwise you will have to pill him.

I have a shih-tzu that is 9 years old. I have changed her food, gave her benedryl, used sprays for itching, and even tried steroids. She bites her feet and back end so bad and so often that her saliva has caused her white hair to turn a brownish color, it stays that way even after bathing. I’ve also tried the hypo-allergenic shampoo and conditioner. Any suggestions?
