Question by ~Lizzy~: My dog has a horrible ear irritation and it won’t go away?
I have taken him to 3 different doctors over the past year and a half and none of them has been able to cure whatever it is. The first doctor said it was E-Coli in his ear and gave meds, nothing happened, the second doctor said it was a bacteria, gave meds and nothing, and this last doc said it is swollen from all the scar tissue and wants to do surgery! What is the scar tissue from? I am at a loss, I just want his ear to be better again… should I continue to see this past vet or find another doctor yet again? Could it be a food allergy?
He is a 9 year old Black Lab
He is currently using an ointment and oral medication

wow it could be so many things ranging from ear mites to bacteria… i would go with the last vt.. yes if there is scar tissue you might need to remove it but you need to get to the underlining cause.. and it might be allergies as you asked also… but what meds have you been on?? oral, ear ointment, ear liquid, etc.. do you have the names?? did the docs tell you to keep them immaculately clean?? and DRY?? what kind of dog do you have?? some types of dogs have bad ears no matter what.. I have worked at vets offices that I have seen dogs come in and/or get meds refilled non-stop during certain seasons and some get ear ointment year round…. good luck and stick with the last doctor.. did any of them do a scraping and look under the microscope??? that would be the 1st thing I would want done, then a deep deep flush and get on the proper meds which might include oral AND ear ointment depending on what the doc sees under the microscope… smile good luck!!

EDIT: Labs are one of the worst for ear infections… its almost a swimmers ear… soes he swimm alot?? even if he doesn’t still sounds like you a are on the right track.. don’t forget the meds and ear cleaning, not even one day of it. be religious about it… he will probably become to hate the treatments/cleaning so make sure you reward him for letting you do it with a small treat… try baby carrots… labs will usually eta anything, make a big deal about the baby carrot like its something really really really special.. use that high squeeky voice.. sliced apples, green beans, bananas, etc. etc …. labs can get fat easy so try something healthy as tat “special special” daily treat… well, good luck you have a long road ahead of you.. smile!!!

****also not sue if I agree with food allergies unless youu just changed his food… its probably just plain allergies.. as it is that time of year… and some Labs even have ear issues all year-round….the scar tissue is from the infection not being treated properly and it builds up the scar tissue….

My dog has horrible gas, what should I do?

Question by Anna: My dog has horrible gas, what should I do?
I have a pit lab mix who has been having HOrescuedgas for the past couple days, it’s so bad that we can’t let her in the same room and us, it’s nasty smelling! She is on Natural Balance fish and sweat potato dog food, she seems to be allergic to chicken and simple grains, she doesn’t get any human food and the only treats she gets are the Natural Balance fish and sweat potato treats. She lives in a clean environment and gets plenty of exercise and love.
Some background, I rescued her from a horrible situations about 4 months ago she was in really bad shape with bloody bumps and infected open sores all over her body from her horrible allergies, she got her shots and fixed when I got her, she also had horrible yeast infections in her ears which have now cleared up. When I first got her she had really bad gas from the toxins leaving her system from the bad food she had been on. But that went away within the first couple weeks.
I’ve hear mixing yogurt into her food would help, but dogs are lactose intolerant so I don’t feel comfortable doing that. Also, I’ve hear mixing rice in would help, but I thought that was just for hardening up diarrhea. Any other ideas?

Help my dog has horrible allergies!?

Question by Kimberly: Help my dog has horrible allergies!?
I think my dog has allergies and he is literally pulling his hair out by chewing himself and licking. Its mostly on his back and the skin where he is doing it is scaly and flaky, it looks like he has dandruff. My husband just medically retired from the military and is looking for a job so right now we just dont have the money for vet care. I’m currently researching programs that can help us with the costs. But my question is, does anyone know any good shampoos or at home remedies that can help my dog in the meantime?

There are no home remedies for allergies until you know what the allergy is and only a vet can tell you. A Oatmeal dog shampoo can give temporary relief. Get the dog to a vet he is clearly miserable. you could hock your computer.

Question by Wendy: My dog notoriously has horrible skin. She is constantly getting a skin infection and is put on antibiotics.?
She’s a full breed German Shepherd and is an indoor dog. She’s been tested for mange but came up negative. She’s obviously got allergies and is on prednisone (which causes diabetes). What can I put on her skin to help relieve the itching? We are in the process of changing her diet to see if that helps.

try putting her on a 100% corn free dog food. that will help aleviate alot of the skin problems. i buy my dog food at petland. nutro lamb meal and rice. try that for about a week and see if you will notice a difference. i had a lhasa aphsa that kept getting “rashes” and one vet said it was a parasite and we took her to another vet and he looked at her and said it was a corn allergy. within a week of chaning foods, she was all better. hope this helps
