About a month ago I noticed a flaky spot on my puppy’s abdomen and some red spots in his ears. I took him in to the vet and he was diagnosed with a skin staph infection and given a week of antibiotics. Two weeks later the spots came back and there were more. I took him back to the vet and he was prescribed 2 weeks of antibiotics and a weekly benzoyl peroxide bath.
I read that these infections can be caused by scratching due to allergies or fleas. My dog dogs not have fleas, and he does not seem to be physically able to scratch where the sores are. He is on a grain free diet and does not seem to scratch a lot in general.
Does anyone have any first hand experience with this type of infection in their dogs? Any tips for preventing future problems? Anything that worked for you?
I will obviously follow the vets instruction, and will continue with follow ups.

When my vet said my dog had flea allergies, she also said that he had a yeast infection, though didn’t help me out much with what to give him. She just said antifungal meds.. Is there any kind of human pills that can help, and maybe shampoo? I’ve read that there are certain things that help, but I’ve only been able to find it in a brand of dandruff shampoo. I can’t use creams because he’s got it damn near all over his body. So, any one got some suggestions for shampoo and oral medications? I know of one little ‘set’ I can buy online, but I can’t afford that.

Adopted an AWESOME dog and was told he had “dry skin, because he scratches a lot”. Well, I took their word for it. About a week later, I checked his ears and he had a massive ear infection. It cleared up with antibiotics. Now it’s back! and he scratches, but only in the morning or evening and bites at his paws. There’s not patches of skin missing. He doesn’t scratch til he bleeds, but he scratches enough to concern me.
So here’s my question. I’ve tried Iams – didn’t work. He just finished a big bag of Purina One Lamb & Rice – didn’t work.
I have lots of venison in my freezer. I’d like to cook that up with vegetables that a dog can tolerate. Fruits as well. I’d like to try this for the next month.
Has anyone ever tried this, feeding their dog natural foods like this? If so, what foods did you use? Please list for me fruits and vegetables please. Can I use rice as well?
Then after 6 weeks if the scratching has stopped, I could slowly incorporate dog food back in. Thanks!
