Question by razz_n_lynn: My dog is allergic to chicken. Will chicken liver, an ingredient in an “allergy” food cause the same hair loss?
My dog is allergic to chicken. After starting to feed him chicken, he lost all the hair on his legs. I switched him to Innove Evo Red Meat, which he has done VERY well on, but had soft stools. So, I mixed it with Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice, but am freaked out after the recall last week. He does better with a mix. I am considering adding in a new food. I like Merrick and the quaility of that food, but even their “Wilderness Blend”, their “allergy blend” has chicken liver in. I found that strange. I want to know whether this would cause the same effects or if it would be such a minute quantity that he’d be fine. Any info is appreciated.

Chicken is chicken no matter what part it is. If he is doing fine on the Innove then dont fool around with another possible allergic reaction.

Question by Mely: What ingredient is causing my dogs allergies?
I have a white chihuahua. He has been eating wellness all his life. He is currently on the small breed formula. He always licks himself in the chest. A few days ago I ran out of his food so I’ve been feeding him more of a raw diet (only temporarily) I noticed he doesn’t lick his chest anymore and his coat isn’t greasy (which it usually is on his back). What kind of dry food can I switch to that will keep his symptoms at bay?
Besides the white chihuahua I have a black one and she eats the same food as him only she’s never had an allergic reaction.

try feeding him a gluten free dog food. There are several on the market. My wife has recently developed an intolerance to gluten and has had to cut out all wheat, barley, rye from her diet as well as she has a soy intolerance and soy is in just about everything, Here is a google search for gluten fee dog foods.

Choose one of them and your problem will probably be solved.

Question by Krystal TTC#1: If dogs are allergic to food what ingredient are they allergic too?
I have a chihuahua/terrier and he has rash on his skin, is losing a lot of hair (idk if its the hot summer that makes them shed like crazy or what), also he sneezes a lot.
I am feeding him science diet. But since it is so expensive here in Hawaii I would like to switch to something a bit better than science diet.
Im afraid he may have a food allergy though but not sure what ingredient he may be allergic too?
any ideas, tips would be helpful too.

My dog is always itching all the time too. I can tell he has allergies. My vet said that a lot of dogs react to corn in dog food- its a really common ingredient. So I’m going to switch to a dog food that doesn’t have corn and hope it helps him not itch so back.

One my dogs has a laundry list of foods she’s allergic to, so recently I decided to put her on a limited ingredient food. I’ve been researching like crazy and I noticed they are WAY more expensive than regular dog food, even grain freed dog food! For instance, Wellness Super5mix sells for about $26 for a 15lb bag where I live, but Wellness Simple Solutions sells for $35 for an 11lb bag! About the cheapest limited ingredient food I can find is California natural and that’s about the same price as Wellness Super5mix.I had her on CA natural for a couple months and her itchiness has improved a ton, but it gives her HORRID gas and loose stools, so I’m probably going to try and find something else (I really would love to do raw, but I live with people who are SUPER against it and where I live even the “cheap” meat is really expensive so it would cost me an arm an a leg to feed).
If limited ingredient diets have LESS ingredients in them which, in theory, should make them less expensive to produce, shouldn’t they cost less?
I’m not talking comparing something full of by-products and fillers to grain free. I’m talking even comparing grain free to limited ingredient foods. For example Wellness CORE is more expensive then Wellness simple solutions. Wellness CORE doesn’t have fillers and by-products… :/
I’ve tried Taste of The Wild…she’s reacts to it. One of the things she’s allergic to is one of the foods that’s supposed to be one of the most allergy friendly…potatoes! Let’s see if I can remember off the top of my head what’s she’s allergic to…
Corn, wheat, beet pulp, soy, any yeast based ingredients, sorghum, certain food dyes…I know there’s more but I’m totally blanking lol. I have it written down but it’s in her vet file in my file cabinet.
The vet said sometimes it can be an interaction of foods that can cause a reaction as well. That’s why the simple ingredient foods work so well…
What’s with the TD!? I swear it’s not me guys!
Leigh: Great suggestions, although like I said it’s been a few months and the smelly gas just never went away. I also have the problem that the kibbles are huge and my poor dog only weighs 12lbs so she has kinda a hard time eating them sometimes. They make a small bite version, but the only flavor they make it in is Lamb and Rice and for some reason she just does not like Lamb based foods at all. Like I said I’ve tried Taste of the Wild, but it has potato, tomato, and fermentation products in it, all of which she’s allergic to. Natural Balance is sky high where I live, $40 for a 15 lb bag! It also has potato in it. I just looked at Pinnacle and it has Potato, tomato, and yeast based products too
THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING!!!!

There are no “shots” for fleas that I know of. Your DIL needs to give you the EXACT NAME and manufacturer’s name of the product, so you can contact them and ask THEM what’s in their product.
There’s no way WE can tell you since we don’t know the product.
YOu also need to show this to your doctor and discuss it… not with the helpful, but not as fully educated masses at YA. -!-
