Question by Samantha: What Ingredients should be in a Hypoallergenic dog food ?
i have a two and a half year old golden retriever and i been noticing even when she is on flea medication like the advantage she still itches i know its not hot spots because she has no red patches but looking at her skin i noticed tiny red bumps and very dry skin when i took her to the vet she suggested omega 3 fatty acids which i brought salmon oil and salmon puffs but she was still itching and her coat is very thinning not full like a golden should be . I changed her food from science diet for the large breed to royal canine for golden retrievers but i think she has a food allergy from corn and wheat which are two ingredients in her royal canine .I know at one to three food allergies commonly affect goldens so my question is does anyone know the ingredients that are supposed to be in a hypoallergenic food and any good food for dogs that have allergies . i work at petsmart so any food you might name expensive or not i can find it and i get a discount so price doesn’t matter thanks .

It all depends on what your dog is allergic to. You may need to try a couple different foods before you find one that works for her.
Grain free food is your best bet. I would say try Orijen, Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Acana Grain Free foods.
If none of those work, Acana Lamb and Apple is a great food. One source of protein(lamb) and only one source of carbohydrate (oats). This is what I feed my Golden Retriever who has food sensitivities.

*Repost* – Which food has better ingredients?

Question by : *Repost* – Which food has better ingredients?
Please don’t bother answering this question unless you know what you’re talking about and are educated on good and bad quality ingredients found in dog food. I wasn’t happy with the answers I received the first time as people seemed to be unsure, so I am reposting the question. Hopefully this time I will be satisified. Thank you for your help.

Question:

I’m having trouble picking between Wellness Core Ocean and Go! Natural Endurance. They are grain-free foods which is GREAT for my dog because he has allergies to grains. After checking out www.dogfoodanalysis.com I learned that both foods are rated six stars which makes it even more difficult to choose between the two. Which one would you pick – based on the ingredients?

Go Natural Endurance: Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, de-boned Chicken, Russett Potato, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols (vit. My personal preference is the Wellness out of the two. BUT both are very good foods.

For me, it would depend upon your desire to feed a poultry-based food to your dog or a fish based. Often dogs who suffer from major allergies do better on fish-based formulas.

Rx dog food w/organic ingredients?

Question by Constant Rago: Rx dog food w/organic ingredients?
I have been feeding my Terrier an organic raw diet for dogs who suffer from allergies. Recently, my vet allerted me to a potential kidney problem after doing blood work & urinalisys and suggested I change her food to a Rx kidney friendly food. (She’s 10 and otherwise healthy.) He was aware of 2 brands: Purina NF & Science Diet KD. Both are made with corn, which is a big allergen for her.
I would love to find an organic, corn free kibble that is formulated to be gentle on the kidneys. (Especially in light of the recent Menu foods horror.)
We travel a lot & I’m not ready to start cooking for her.
Does anyone have any ideas about alternative pet food companies that can give me what I’m looking for?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, PLEASE stay away from Purina and Science Diet! Those companies, and all other grocery brand pet foods, make nothing but meat-flavored cereal for pets, full of disgusting animal by-products, cancer-causing artificial preservatives, etc. etc. etc. It’s “edible” to pets, but it’s certainly not FOOD.

So, here’s what you need to think about, since your dog has kidney problems:

Make SURE that your dog gets PLENTY of water, which means adding water to her kibble if you’re going to feed her regular dry food (which I wouldn’t suggest in her case), or continuing to feed her raw foods and canned foods.

If you DO feed her any kibble, make sure that it’s low in phosphorous, magnesium, sodium, and ash. Basically, the percentages on all of those (except for ash) need to be less than 1.0%, but much lower than that even, if possible. On the ash, try to stay below 3% if possible.

Look up Grandma Lucy’s Artisan dog foods. Chicken has the lowest counts on all of those things that I just mentioned, plus it’s not too high in protein (which is definitely a MUST in any dog or cat’s diet, but when it comes to pets who have existing kidney problems, slightly lower protein is better), so it’s an excellent flavor choice. It’s a freeze-dried, completely natural, extremely limited ingredient dog food, and a 3 lb. bag of it makes about 17 lbs. of actual food once you’ve added water to it. It’s the best all-natural food that I can think of for your dog’s issue, plus it’s really easy to travel with!

Also, as I said before, feeding her raw and canned food is great. Make sure that you check the percentages of those ingredients that I mentioned before on the canned foods, though. If you can’t find the percentages on the can, don’t be afraid to call the company and ask for that information! Also, be sure that the canned food is all-natural, but I think you already know that. ;)

I hope that helps!

Nature’s Variety is a very good food. They have a raw food, frozen food, and kibble program.

All of their food is USDA certified for human consumption (which means it won’t have anything nasty or illegal in it)

this is the brown rice formula, but they have other varieties.
