Need anti-alllergy advice for my dog’s itching?

Question by ISABEL: Need anti-alllergy advice for my dog’s itching?
I posted a couple of weeks ago because my dog’s itching was then a mystery, which we have now decided is almost certainly a dustmite allergy. He is a jack russell crossed with a dachshund, he is a year old. He started scratching as soon as he went upstairs when we got him three weeks ago, and bites and scratches all night if not treated with Benadryl. He loves to sleep on our bed and would cry all night if left downstairs. He doesn’t scratch during the day, just when he’s in the bedroom. Can anyone recommend a good anti-dustmite spray to use on the mattress and bedding (they seem very expensive!), and has anyone managed to overcome a similar problem with their dog? I know the simplest solution would be for him to sleep downstairs but that would prove very problematic. Also – is there any chance that he could develop natural immunity, he’s only been here for three weeks? We have given him baby Benadryl and that really helps, but don’t think its a particularly long-term solution. Fleas ruled out, food almost certainly ruled out, detergent ruled out, he is also very happy and settled – but we are all losing sleep!
Forgot to say we have bathed him in a good oatmeal shampoo, but only twice, so maybe that takes few goes before its effective – will bathe him again soon, as I understand that too much bathing can dry the skin out.
Many thanks for all the answers. Although he is scratching there are no red areas or hair loss (yet). I took him to the vets, and he suggested the dustmite thing, which did seem to make sense. The bedding has been thoroughly washed, the mattress vacuumed, the floor sprayed with anti-flea treatment, so some of the areas suggested have been eliminated up already. I will follow up the homeopathic advice but will have to see if it is available in the UK, as this is where I am. Have ordered some tea tree and aloe vera cream to put on the itchy areas as I found this suggested to another similar question.

hmmm i had a similar problem with my lassie collie. she wasnt allergic to the fleas nothing and she didnt seem to be affected everywhere. then the vet suggested giving her weekly baths in this special oatmeal shamppo (i cant recall what it was called the vet shouldbe able to give it to you though or recomend an over the counter shampoo) and after three baths sure enough the itching stopped.

the vet said that perhaps she had sensitive skin which enhanced her allergy somehow and the oatmeal just help to ease to the point where it didnt bother her.

it never really made sense to me but hey it worked lol so i suppose its worth a try

Q&A: sheltie wont stop itching?

Question by jaycee: sheltie wont stop itching?
I have a 1 1/2 year old Sheltie and he wont stop itching. I know that it is summer and maybe allergy season but for some reason he wont stop itching himself. He has no fleas we have him on flea control that is working good for him. He is also loosing a bit of hair. We took him to the vet a few weeks ago and they gave us some orange medicine to give to him in his mouth and a spray to spray on the itchy parts that turn red. They said give him benedrill as needed. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you sooooo much

I have a sheltie as well, and last year, he had been itching like crazy. We found that he had a sore on his stomach that he had apparently scratched open. Maybe search your dog for some sort of sore ? Benadryl helped him so much, as well as neosporin.

Recently, my dog has been scratching as well though, and he doesn’t have any sort of problem. It usually begins after we take him outside. Maybe some sort of allergies. Or, if he hasn’t been washed recently, that could have something to do with it.

If you aren’t completely sure he doesn’t have fleas, I would do a thorough inspection.
Anyways, good luck and I hope he begins to feel better soon. :)

Q&A: Dog is constantly itching?

Question by i <3 books: Dog is constantly itching?
Allergies are high again and he has hot spots and a pink belly. I don’t want to get the cortozone shot b/c I’m afraid of the long term effects. What can I do that’s over the counter? He’s on his first week of this months Advantage. I gave him a dip in Adams yesterday just to make sure it wasn’t fleas and he’s still itching like crazy nutso. Thanks in advance.
This all happened last year as well. And yes to the jerk off who said the vet. They’ve mentioned the same things except it’s NOT inflammation of the skin b/c we had him tested. We have him on Chloropro (spelling) as well

Dog Won’t Stop Itching?

Question by plobster19: Dog Won’t Stop Itching?
I’ve been to four different vets with my dog. He’s a shelter rescue Beagador puppy who’s about 8 months old. About 4 months ago, he started itching himself raw. He would get infected, and I would have to take him to the vet to get antibiotics.

All FOUR of the vets I have taken him to have tested him for mites, fleas, ticks, etc. He’s had so many skin scrapings, and none of them have turned up to be sarcoptic mange (scabies), but EVERY vet I go to is ABSOLUTELY sure it’s sarcoptic mange and they demand we treat for sarcoptic mange.

I agreed at one point because he had that kicking reflex that’s indicative of mange, but he doesn’t do that anymore. He’s losing hair around his eyes, under his belly, and he chews on his paws and legs constantly now. I keep the E-collar on him 24 hours a day now because if I take it off, he’ll just bite and scratch himself until he bleeds.

I will also mention that one vet gave him a steroid shot in case it was allergies, and this had no effect. Help Him!
I should add that I tried changing his food, but I didn’t try for very long. I switched him to a “novel protein” dog food made by Wellness. It was Venison and Potato, I believe. That said, he loved it for a couple of days or so, then he stopped eating it. Maybe I didn’t give it long enough. However, wouldn’t the steroid shots he got help with a food allergy?
Also, I’ll clarify because someone seems to think I’m refusing treatment for my dog.

My dog *has* been treated at least 4 times for sarcoptic mange, both by Ivermectin injections and by topical means (Sentinel, I believe), and yet vets continue saying that’s what they think it is.
