Question by Muffster: Bad itchy reaction after going to vet. Any home remedies?
My dog had a rash near his testicles. So we took him to the vet. They applied betadine with some other solution. Later tonight it went bad…. Seems it gave him a very bad itch on the entire place. residual betadine on skin caused itching and also made him wanting to vomit if in case he licked and scratched himself. So bad that he was panting restlessly went crazy and couldn’t rest a moment. It was going bad so we called nearby vet and he said it’s just betadine that he licked made him restless.
Now we washed his skin anyway with his shampoo. Isn’t there a home remedy for getting rid of allergy and soothing the skin?
Chihuahua of three years.
Isn’t benadryl for cough?

Do you have any Cortisone or Benadryl lotion? A benadryl tablet may calm him down too.

I have an itchy dog!?

Question by Tiffany: I have an itchy dog!?
I have a boxer, Molly, and she has an itchy back…seems to be around this time of year which, makes me wonder if it’s allergies. There aren’t fleas or mange or anything like that, I also have a German Shorthair with no such problems! She only gets a bath a couple times a year or more if she really needs one. I think it’s just dry skin. Anyway, it is only on the top of her back, the length of her back. So, a 2′ x 1′ section in the thicker hair. I read a lot about oils, oatmeals, and extracts, but I am wondering if there any sort of product (maybe a powder or something) that is safe, yet effective? Since it’s a big section, cutting open vitamin E pills to ‘massage onto the affected area’ would be a task. I mean, if I have to, I will! :)

I have the same issue with my dog! Right around this time of year she gets really itchy and she also bites her paws a lot, but she doesn’t have fleas or ticks. So once a day, I give her a human benadryl pill in a cheese cube (the vet told me to do this, so it’s safe). And when I give her a bath, I use medicinal shampoo for dry skin, which you can find anywhere at Petsmart or Petco.

my dog has an itchy belly?

Question by jojo: my dog has an itchy belly?
in the past two days my shih tzu has not been able to sleep. every 5-20 seconds she jerks around and tries to change positions because she is uncomfortable. when she seems the most frustrated, she licks her belly. I checked her tummy and everything looks completely normal. there are no bites, fleas, dry spots, or redness. her genitals look 100% normal as well. the only thing I can think of is that it is dry skin due to the change in weather. her food has not been changed and she has no allergies that we know of. also, the “itching” is only on her belly. she hasn’t chewed her paws or licked anything else. is there anything I can do to soothe this? we don’t bathe her often either. not unless it is time for her hair cut (about every 4 months, professionally done.) I heard olive oil was a good home remedy?
thanks for your advice.

There are lots of itch relief or soothing creams available from most pet stores –
If you suspect it may be from dry skin try using an Omega 3 + 6 supplement which contains fatty acids which promote good skin and coat health.
Also think about whether it could be an allergy – grass/pollen, carpet etc.
Otherwise some dogs lick and chew at themselves as an obsessive/bored behavior.

If it doesn’t clear up, perhaps consult a vet to see if they have any suggestions.

Good luck :)

I have a very Itchy puppy?

Question by evans512: I have a very Itchy puppy?
I got my Puppy two weeks ago, and when I got him he had small bumps on him, mostly on his under side, I asked the breeder/seller what was wrong with him and he said the litter got into ants. So we got him anyway, thinking it was nothing oatmeal shampoo and neosporin couldn’t fix. Well it is now two weeks later and puppy has had those places heal, and new spots turn up. I have been reading online and it seems like he has this “rash” called hotspot in his armpit, and in the creases of his legs. His fur is still thin on the top of his body, and he has some patches where it looks like he scratched so much, or maybe from when his litter mates were playing. I can’t figure this out. He has a vet appointment this coming week, for his check-up and shots, and I will have the vet look at it for a proper diagnosis. He is very itchy, and itches all the time, making his “rash” worse, and new places pop up. I don’t know if he has allergies, or some skin disorder. He eats Purina puppy chow, the “veggie” kind, I bathe him often, which makes me think I am drying him out and making him itch, but He needs baths. And I thought the oatmeal was helping at first when bumps started going away. He has zero fleas, and we also have another dog and cat living in our house with no fleas, ticks, or any of his symptoms. They eat different food (they aren’t mine). When he goes outside to potty he likes to jump around in the leaves and grass, which makes me wonder if he can be allergic to grass? If so how do I train him to stay out of the grass? I am just so confused, and I just want to know what I can do to help my poor guy in the meantime between now and when he goes to the vet? He itches intensly and it worries me.

sounds like allergies to me. To stop the scratching and licking you can buy HYDROXYZINE. Try that. It comes in a pill form and it is taken every 12 hours for about 12 days until the itching has stopped. Depending how bad the rash is you might need to get a cone so that he stops licking while on the medicine.
