Question by steve24639: How to cure an itchy dog?
About 6 weeks ago my dog developed some kind of skin problem. He has built up skin flakes all over him, especially around his ears. He scratches constantly. The first time we took him to the vet the vet said that it was a flea allergy causing it. He gave him some kind of tablet to take monthly and put him on antibiotics. This helped at first but what healed up came back and worsened. I took him to the same vet a couple of weeks later. The second time he said that the fleas were gone, but said that he had mites and that might be what’s causing it. So he prescribed a tube of liquid that goes between his shoulder blades that would kill the mites, and more antibiotics. Today marks 2 weeks after the second visit, and he is in the same shape. I’m going to take him to a different vet, but also wanted to get some advice on what his problem might be on here. He is a pitbull/greyhound mix and is about 11 years old. Since developing the skin condition he has lost weight, from about 70 pounds down to the mid 60′s.

Question by izzy: If a dog is healing on the inside can they feel itchy?
Well My dog has a huge bump under her chin for a while now, her lip also would swell up too. They said it wasn’t cancer so it’s probably an abscess.. but she can’t go in and get her teeth cleaned because shes allergic to the medicine and gets majorly dehydrated and her heart races like crazy… so now I have to brush her teeth every day… all of the sudden the bump has gotten tons smaller.. also under her chin she seems to get really itchy and starts rubbing her chin on everything… and when i pet her under there her foot starts tapping the ground.. could this mean that she is healing on the inside and why its itching her so bad? or maybe something else… she does tend to get skin problems from her allergies as well.. but she doesn’t get itchy ones just irritated skin.. could it be just another skin issue? or her healing?

I’d say healing. Check with vet if it doesn’t stop.

Question by Curio T: what should I do for my itchy dog?
I have an 8 year old poodle With red itch skin. I have tried every kind of bath and salmon oil in the food. I have tried giving him Beynadryl in case its an Allergy but nothing works. I took him too a vet who said they would have to run a whole bunch of test I can’t afford. Is there anyway I can diagnose this situation by observation. Does anyone know a good spray or food mix in for this

Question by Isabelle: 4 year old has an itchy rash that looks like goosebumps?
Hi. My son has a persistent rash that looks just like goosebumps all over his torso and back. It’s not red or swollen – it just looks like goosebumps. I’ve taken him to the doc twice and they just said to give Zyrtec and Singulair, make sure to use soaps and detergents for sensitive skin, etc. I’ve done that. I even had him take a blood-allergy test, which was positive for mold and dogs (we have neither). He doesn’t seem to have a food allergy, although I do keep him away from milk. Other than that, he is very healthy and has no issues. What could be causing it and how can we make it go away? It bothers him a lot, especially in the hot months (we’re in Florida where it’s very hot and humid). I’ve tried the spray-on Benadryl, powder with menthol, Aveeno, Cetaphil lotion, natural soaps, etc. I removed the curtains in his room, had the floors steam cleaned, put an allergen cover on his bed and pillows. I honestly do not know what else to do. HELP!

Question by Miranda: Itchy dog skin relief?
I have a 9 year old beagle mix that just itches like crazy! I have recently changed her dog food to Fromm (since it’s better than the Beneful she was on), I give her Benadryl (4 a day like the vet said), and a fish oil every day. She is an outside dog & she is due for her bath. Just wondering if she just needs a really good shampoo or a allergy shot. She had one a few years ago but I dont want to have to be out that vet bill again (cuz she’s due in Sept. for her yearly shots but of course if nothing works, then in Sept. I’ll get her the shot if needed). But I dont want her to have to wait that long cuz Im sure the itching is driving her crazy. It gets so bad sometimes that she has licked herself raw in a few small spots before. Any advice???
And no she doesnt have fleas or anything like that. We keep her on the monthly medicine for fleas, ticks, heart worms, ear mites, all of that. And I figured with Beneful not being such a good dog food, that switching to a better one would not affect her skin like this. As far as I know, she’s never had any food allergy (eating Beneful or something similar all her life, you would think that would affect her more so than eating better food like Fromm).

Sounds like her skin is really bugging her and you’ve done a lot to help the poor thing out! Talk to your vet about good shampoos to use that may help hydrate her skin or at least not irritate it. Good luck!
