Ok so I just got a pet dog today and..?

Question by Becs: Ok so I just got a pet dog today and..?
Well she is itching a lot and she has some red areas where she is scratching and I don’t want her to irritate her skin so much that she will start bleeding. She’s a yorkie and some type of wire hair mix. Her skin is kinda oily what can I used to stop that? I know Oatmeal is for dry skin.

Also, I think she is like coughing? She’s sneezing a lot and sounds like she’s clearing her throat. Maybe it’s just allergies? I live in Alabama and there is a lot of pollen and it’s really hot so it might be allergies. But I just want to make sure if it’s not anything else it could be maybe?

Yeah and since I got her like several hours ago she just kinda lays on her bed and won’t go anywhere else in the apartment, she did to explore but won’t move from that spot now. I also have to cats and she started to growl at them, the cats are scared of her of course. I know this is kinda long and confusing but thanks for answering.
I just talked to the girl I got her from today and she says she does have some kennel cough and she was on some medication. Also the scratching she said could be allergies, she said if to give her an oatmeal bath and see if that will help. And some cough medicine, if that doesn’t do anything in the next few days take her to her vet. She works at one.

Where did you get the dog from? Call the people that you bought her from and explain the problem. Also call your vet to get her checked out. Sounds like she may have allergies, the mange, an upper respiratory infection…etc. You’ll never know what it could be if you don’t get her looked at and you really don’t want to put it off, as the problem may get worse if it’s left untreated. If you got her from a pet store, she was most likely from a puppy mill which is why she’s so sick.

I just got a dog bite What should i do?

Question by Seanx23: I just got a dog bite What should i do?
I went to my friends house and got a dog bite from one of his two dogs that were barking at me, the smaller dog bit me on the leg. I had jeans on though. I rolled up at my jeans and i just saw some skin peeled off. Later i got affront of my friend’s car while the light’s shinning on it i saw the blood coming out from the wound. So i drove home ( which took about 20min), My dad (Allergy Doctor) washed my wound with water, and put some anti infectious powder on it and covered it over with a band-aid. I asked my friend if the dog has been vaccinated he said recently. I’m afraid that i will get rabies, I’m 17 years old and i have a fairly good immune system, i understand that the virus can be dormant for weeks up to months before it actually reaches the central nervous system. I really need some serious advice from people that has gotten bites from dogs and suggest what i should do in my situation, and what are the chances, the likelyhood of Rabies infecting me. I need to act before it’s too late. Please help.

Question by CrisaRei: My dog has a staph infection that just won’t go away!?
I have been to three different vets and they all conclude it is staph. One did a skin scrape, the other checked visually, and the other skin scraped and gave her an injection to prevent fungus. One gave her antihistamines, antibiotics, and a shampoo (this was most effective). After her supply ran out, the bumps still were not gone (there were there less, but not completely gone) so we started again, and it seems worse now.

I adopted her from another family, and she showed no symptoms. She was six months old at the time, and a month after I adopted her she started showing signs. I switched her dog food from Purina to Iams to Blue Buffalo Chicken and Rice. I’m thinking about switching her back to her original dog food to see if she is allergic to dog food, after that I plan on switching her to a lamb diet without corn, beef, pork, or chicken – things most dogs are allergic to.

However, I do not think it is a food allergy since her only symptoms are scratching, pustules around her neck and back, and watery eyes. She has no diarrhea, has one bowel movement a day, urinates normally, and is still her normal self.

I think it is a contact allergy and now I take her outside using a leash to control where she goes. I noticed that her staph got slightly better since she doesn’t go into the bushes anymore.

I plan on using a hypoallergenic detergent as well since I believe that month after i adopted her not only did I change her dog food but I changed the laundry detergent I use.

I have no more ideas on how to deal with this. The vets aren’t really listening and think that this is just common. The second vet said she was allergic to gnat bites and told me to put children’s bug off on her, and I did, but it did not help.

It is cold now – there are no bugs, and her staph is still here.

The vet visits have cost me over $ 500 and I’m so stressed out. I contact the previous owners, they have yet to get in touch with me.

She is also almost a year old – ten months now. A year in December. She is a Miniature Pinscher and she is not spayed. I do not want to get her spayed until her infection is completely gone.

I have visited numerous canine pyoderma sites to try and figure it out, and I think I know so much about staph I can probably diagnose another dog (just kidding). But I have read countless numbers of sites…

Does anyone have any other suggestions on what I can do to determine what she is allergic to?

again, her symptoms are:
itching
watery eyes
pustules
loss of fur around pustules
licking of the pustuled area

other than that, she is perfectly normal.

I pointed the watery eyes out to my vet and she said it was normal in her breed, but I don’t think so…
she is currently on antibiotics, medicated shampoo, and antihistamines for the itching.
No, I have not done bloodwork. I may try that actually. I am allergic to dust mites as well so I have dust mite covers on my bed and we do frequently vacuum and I dust a lot, I don’t use my air purifier anymore, but I could do that as well.

I will wait for some more possibilities because I am open to various ideas. But thank you for that information.

The most important thing is to not let her scratch….or lick… at all. That is how the staph stays bad and gets spread. Cleaning her with a good anti-bacterial soap would be good. If possible, get her on an anti-biotic as soon as possible, and try an anti-itch cream.

I’m not sure the name of the meds it doesn’t say. its for his inflamed joints…sooo….i’m just confused why all of a sudden he coudnt wait to be let out. we let him out whenever he wants he usally lets us know.
what it is isnt labeled on the meds. it just has directions. i mean he probably told me when i was there but i honestly cant remember what he said. but i will give them a call.

Question by Donald: How do I keep just a few fleas jumping on my dog when we go outside, not 14 everytime?
My dog is small, and we have frontline plus on her. She is severly allergic to fleas, scratches till hair comes off from just one unless I put special spray for skin, special shampoo on and give her steroids for itching and inflammation. She also gets a black fungus from skin allergy that I put medicine on. I have tried garlic juice on her,no help, pennyroyal oil, but just combing her with a flea comb every time we go out is the only way I have found to get them off. I want help with keeping them from getting on, at least 14 to 20 everytime we go out. We can’t spray the yard as we have free range chickens that supply us with eggs. Thanks in advance Frustrated in Arkansas

Have you tried advantage? Sometimes we recommend that people try both to see what works better. Also dont bathe the dog after applying the stuff.
