Question by pz: do you know anyone who has had worst luck with pets? do tell…?
i have had 6 pets in my adult life…30 years old, got started at 19.

cat 1: Poops~n~Bites : died of cancer at age 6 (after surgeries, cryogenics, chemo). She crapped on the carpet every day of her life UNTIL one month before she died. And although a lover she would bite you when she felt she was done being petted. We euthanized her, but probably waited too long because it was really hard to do.

cat 2: Trixie (followed 6 months later) died at age 6 also, from a heart attack from the vacuum-no joke!!

cat 3: Ninja (four years later) died AGAIN at age 6 from kidney failure (after lots of visits, home IV fluids, change if diet). it came on strong and from the time the symptoms were present we only had about 2 weeks with her. we had gotten her levels back to a good level from a few days stay at the vet ($ $ $ ) but she was in a LOT of pain a few days later and we put her down.

Cat 4 : Guadalupe “Lupe” 4 years old ALIVE!! However, Lupe was diagnosed with a heart murmur at age one: 1 or 2 on a scale 1-6, 6 being worst. a cardiogram showed half her heart was solid hard from heart disease at age 2, and also was rated 4-5 on scale. without meds she was given 6mos to live at age 2. we give her 2 pills a day and seems like she is great although we know her time is limited. we know a day will come that she will exhibit signs of suffocation (cardiac arrest) and we will immediately bring her in to be put down. they said it’s very painful (CA). also, they want us to give her cardiograms every 6 mos but they are $ 400+ and WE ARE BROKE. the only one in the house with health insurance is the DOG.

DOG 1: willis!!! the million dollar dog (insured!) status: ALIVE AND EXPENSIVE!!! (and i love him with allllllll of my heart, soul and credit cards)

YEAR ONE:
*multiple bladder infections
*lots of diarehea (changed diet)
*multiple eye infections
*massive loss of hair (related to allergies)
*severe allergies (food and insects)
*puppy strangles disease
*benign hystiocytoma #1
*extreme infection from absess from removal of 1st hystiocytoma. the vet wasn’t able to test it. he thought it may be a tumor & i tried to be pro-active, since it looked like Poops~N~Bites’ mass cell growths and i was told boxers are tumor factories. the result was a few days after surgery we ended up taking him to the vet 4x in 24hrs (was seen at reg. vet 2x & er vet 2x, both places by multiple vets). the last time we brought him in (to ER less than 2hrs after reg. vet visit) they told us he probably wouldn’t make it (infection had spread all over his body-he was FILLED w/ fluid and pus). they did an aggressive surgery and put lots of drainage tubes in and removed tons of gangreen skin. they weren’t able to tell me if he was going to make it for 2 days!! he wasn’t able to exercise or play for one month after that, but recovered.

YEAR TWO
*pneumonia
*got “the flu” or ate poison outside again (we live in the city)
*hystiocytoma #2 (left untouched since first was benign and it went away eventually)
*flu (or ate poison outside)
*ate a half of a CD, as well as dvd cases, hair brushes and mutliple ink pens….
*LOTS AND LOTS of yeast infections in ears and between toes resulting in many, many expensive shampoos, medicated pads, ear cleaners, epsom salt baths (5m 2x a day). did i mention my husband and i both work 1-2 FT jobs each and were in school FT??? (we had doggie day care and opposite schedules so he wasn’t neglected and we also walked him at the minimum 2hrs a day)
*funky stinky penis infection (mild, but disgusting)

YEAR THREE
*benign hystiocytoma (2 of them… one got gruesome, both went away)
*ate chocolate, raisins & a btl. of neosporin.
*Bloat
*Tumor (grade 2-1) we had removed.

DOG 2 : Shakey Jake
a one year old boxer we rescued 4 months ago. i found him on craigslist and adopted him because he was in a really tiny crate and he was 7months old. the owner told me he was in there 12-13 hrs a DAY!!! because of work and commute. it broke my heart, esp knowing how much exercise and socialization these dogs need. she promised me he was up to date on shots, totally healthy and mostly house broken. turns out, she lied. i brought him to the vet 12 hrs later…he had ear mites, worms, skin infections, broken tail in 2 parts and was malnourished. he didn’t respond to our voices (i thought he was deaf-no just ignored). he bit us (not maliciously just playing, but OUCH) and was totally crazy. it took 2 months to house train him. he’s still hyper but all of his health stuff got cleared up with shots, meds, bandages and love!!!

he had one $ 300 flu-like experience but besides that is seemingly healthy. he was fine after he got rehydrated.

about my boxer eating choc/raisins/neosporin/cds/pens/etc PLEASE DO NOT JUDGE ME!!!!!! all times were extreme accidents (or in part from them climbing on the counters that we thought they couldn’t reach). my husband cut off part of his thumb at work and left the neosporin on the table

My sister had a dog with a lot of the same problems (food allergies – hair falling out, skin rashes, absesses). She switched to RAW diet (raw uncooked meat, a balance of meat and organs) and the allergy problems are gone.. the dog has a beautiful coat of fur now. Turns out her back problems were also related to food allergies. Despite RAW diet costing more then kibble she has saved hundreds on vet bills.

Question by animal lover 156: what could be wrong with my dog, have asked questions before, please help, dont’ know whats wrong, or vet?
my dog has had bald patches on her back, she has been tested for mange, ring worm, etc.. in parasites she tested for all internal parasites and external parasites.

they have cleared up, but now ALL her fur except on her neck and face, and feet is shorter, dry and thinned out.
she has half the ampunt of fur as she used to have her fur is thin and her skin is dry and flakey.
whats wrong
she has had special shampoo, she has to be bathed in it weekly its called ‘malaseb shampoo’ she has had 2 types of tablets but not working so she hasn’t got them anymore.
she is only 4, she is a staffordshire bull terrier, white with black spots, has had allergies all her life and as normal every year she gets ‘hives’ (lumps on her body, normal for her, gets them every year in summer’ but we don’t know whats wrong she had a vet appointment and they gave us a new bottle of malaseb shampoo and carry on using it weekly.
we have been using it for about a month already, she has also have some cream for when she has the sores from the skin scraping, but this shampoo is for the dry skin but what about the fur loss?

please help, she seems not in pain and her normal self, a sleepy, but jumpy when someone comes in, LOL, been like it all her life, still like a little baby and i don’t want it to get worse.

Question by Kathy Morrison: Does any know of good brand of dog food for a possible food allergy?
I have an 8 year old Mini Schnauzer. She had what seems to be anal gland problems. She constantly licks back there. The vet believes she may have a food allergy and wants to put her on z/c Hills prescription dog food. I now have her on Wellness Super5Mix Complete Health Whitefish & Sweet Potato Recipe Dry Dog Food and mix in some wet food from wellness so she’ll eat it. At one time she had pimples on her skin so I switched her from Iams to Wellness 3 years ago. The skin problems went away but the anal issue still continued. No my question…. Does any know of good brand of dog food for a possible food allergy. Really don’t want to switch to prescription if I can avoid it and still get the same results.

you need to see a vet to determine if it is an allergy. Even a vet may not be able to determine if it is an allergy but you will at least know for sure what is going on and a proper course of action. You seem to have fixed the food issue, but there may be another problem as well.

Help Me!!!!!! I don’t know what to do!!!!!!?

Question by : Help Me!!!!!! I don’t know what to do!!!!!!?
I am a 14 year old girl, and I am 5′1″ and 240 pounds. And yes, I know that I’m showing signs of being morbidly obese.

I’ve always been fat, like since I was 6-7 years old. I’ve tried losing weight, but it won’t come off! My doctor made me go to a special fitness center, but I still kept gaining weight. Now he’s thinking about weight loss surgery! The problem is, I eat the same amounts of food as the rest of my family, if not less, and I’m as active as I can be, but I keep gaining weight!

I try to be active, but it’s not easy for me because I have extremely severe allergies and allergy-induced asthma. So, I can’t go outside for very long because I’m allergic to everything outside! Trees, dust, mold, pollen, cats, dogs, ect. You name it, I’m allergic to it.

I really want to lose weight! Do you know what it’s like to have to shop in the Woman’s Plus section of Walmart and get out of style clothing? Do you know what it’s like to stay at home because 1. your allergic to EVERYTHING outside and 2. because your embarrassed about yourself? Do you know what it’s like to have your doctor strongly advise weight loss surgery to save your life?

So, I want to know: Can the Wii Fit help me to lose weight? Because I’m willing to do anything that I can to lose weight!

Also, I’m showing many signs of Cushing’s Syndrome or hypothyroidism, like:

Fatigue
Sluggishness
Increased sensitivity to cold
Constipation
Pale, dry skin
A puffy face
Hoarse voice
An elevated blood cholesterol level
Unexplained weight gain
Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness
Pain, stiffness or swelling in my joints
Muscle weakness
Heavier than normal menstrual periods
Brittle fingernails and hair
Depression

There’s a lot more symptoms that I have, but I don’t want to bore you with them.

What can I do? How can I tell my doctor my concerns? According to my mother, there is a history of hypothyroidism in my family. I’m only 14, and I want to tell my doctor, but I’m scared! How can I tell him my concerns about my body? Thanks so much!!!!!!

And PLEASE don’t be rude! I just need help!
Ok, I’m not afraid to tell you what I eat in a day. I’m being as truthful as possible. Here’s what I eat in a typical day:

Breakfast: A bowl of Rice Krispies with no extra sugar (I can’t stand extra sugar) and 1% milk

Lunch: Some sort of soup like Vegetable beef soup or tomato soup (because it fills me up better than other things) and a turkey sandwich

Dinner: Grilled skinless chicken about the size of my fist, broccoli, and maybe some corn (I try to avoid starches like mashed potatoes and noodles, although on Thanksgiving I don’t mind having some)

Snack: Usually no snack, but sometimes if I’m hungary I’ll have some yougurt or an apple.

Is there a website where I can find a safe diet plan for kids? I’m cyber schooled now, so I don’t have to worry about school lunches.

Do you think that a hypothyroid problem might be some of the problem?

How much does weight loss surgery in teens cost? I JUST WANT TO GET THE WEIGHT OFF!!!!!

Go see a doctor and get fat burners. Try not to eat any meat or fast food. Walk, swim, run.

Question by justkrisi: Does anyone know how I can purchase Depo Medrol with out a prescription?
Okay here’s the situation. I live in a small town and have many animals I care for (like 30 cats along with any other animals people decide they don’t want) I run an animal rescue group and I have a small dog that needs an allergy shot once a month. I can get them through petmeds.com through mail order but my vet refuses to give me an RX prescription. with all of the animals (that aren’t mine by the way )that I take in to him I would think he’d spare me the trouble of coming in and help me to save the money since I give him all of my business. He told me that my dog needs an allergy shot at least once a month to keep him from getting skin infections and if I can just give it to him at home and have them mailed to me once a month why won’t he write his prescription for me? It’s getting too expensive to do this every month when I could be spending $ 27 for the year for his meds instead of 25 every month. Does anyone know where I can get it without a prescription because he’s being ridiculous?
I am the legal owner of the dog. He gets horrible skin infections without it so unless you advise me to let him get an infection with his skin pussing all of the time this is what I was directed to do by the vet. All medications have side affects just as that pack of sweet n’ low might cause cancer it just comes with the territory of medicine. I am doing everything I can for him and would only be using it under the advise of a vet so don’t act like i’m an animal abuser. Most people don’t even take their animal to the vet. He is very well cared for and I only want him to get better.

Its a prescription medication.. you can NOT get it without a prescription.

Any place that would sell it without a Rx is likely selling expired or counterfiet drugs.. just because its “cheaper” doesnt mean you’d be saving money.. as it would be a waste of money if it doesnt work!

See if another vet will write the prescription for you.
