Question by Construction Chick: My dogs are eating their hair and their poop looks like a wig!?
I have two 6 month old West Highland Terriers. Both are from the same litter. I noticed last week one of them started itching and she has a tiny patches of hair missing legs.
Now her sister has joined in on the fun! Same condition. These aren’t my first dogs so I am aware that there is the possibility of skin problems.
Their dog food is all natural with no corn, soy, etc. The spots are just hair loss – no “hot spots” or crusty lesions. We live in New England and it is dry & cold right out so I was thinking it wasnt allergies to food. We wash them every month or so – brush them and powder them as you should do with a Westie.
Yesterday I noticed that their poop looks like they ate a vaccuum cleaner bag. It is FULL of hair, which I am guessing is theirs from licking and biting the area.
So what else could be causing this? I am stopping by my vet to pick up an elizabethan collar tonight. Is this hairy poop ok? Can it cause problems? This scratching is making me nuts!
HA HA Montgomery! That would give us a visual representation of $ hit Head! Thanks for the new money making idea!
No fleas – Yuck! I know what those look like!
We live in the city so there are no wild animals (except my boyfriend, he he) Maybe it is a grass or “fragrance” allergy?

my cats shed a lot, so it could just be that. But I would take your pooch to a vet just to be sure.

Question by rich: why do i itch…..feels like somethings biting me. fleas? dust mites? allergic reactions?
over the last couple weeks i’ve been feeling like i’m being bit by something. it doesn’t matter where i’m at. mostly in bed, but also noticed it at work. i just feeling like somethings nipping or biting me. i’ll scratch it and then it’ll go away. i have had two dogs, a husky and a lab, and never had any problems. i just recently got another husky. i also live in a one bedroom apartment, but keep it clean and vacuum often. i do know i’ve been having some allergic reactions with the new husky. i’m allergic to cats, but i can feel the same symptoms from my new husky. it’s not bad though, after an hour in a house with a cat i’m done, but i can live with my husky. when i start hugging my new husky i reaction. there is also another problem. since the first day i got him he has had fleas. i gave him a bath with flea shampoo and now i can feel those allergy symptoms more, but i can still be next to him. he’s also been in my bed, although he doesn’t stay for too long. can i get fleas on myself or does dust mites sound more like it. i sdon’t see any fleas or dustmites in my bed though, in fact i don’t think i’ve ever seen a live flea ever. are my “bites” an allergic reaction? if it is how can i allergy proof my apartment?

hi
anyway, i didn’t read your entire statement cause it is so long…
but i think it is not an allergic reaction… it could be a bacterial contamination or could also be a insect infestation since alergic reaction happens systematically which means it affects your intire body and not just a part of it

Question by pianoh8ter: my dog is itching like crazy!?
my 8 yr old, female shih tzu is itching like CRAZYY! ishe itches her ears, the side of her body, her neck and bites her paws. i have literally done everything i can possibly think of. i have bathed her in a special shampoo which relieves allergies since it might be allergies, i have gotten her some flea meds since it could be the fleas, i have applied some hydrocoritzone(?) on her itchy red spots, changed her food, and even tried giving her some benadryl. but she still won’t stop itching, to the point when she can barely go to bed at night. i’m about to take her to the vet soon but i want to know if there are ways to treat her itchingness at home.

Question by asu89: My dog just started itching/biting himself like crazy these past days.?
My (almost 3 years old) Golden Retriever has been itching like crazy for these past couple of days. I gave him a bath today with a flea and tick shampoo, but he’s still going at it.
I just discovered that because he is not only itching, but also chewing on himself too, that now he has very irritated/hair loss spots on him.
I am positive it is not fleas, because not only do we have 2 other dogs in our house who are totally fine, but us humans would itching like crazy as well.
And, since he is almost 3 years old, that would be unusual if all the sudden he has allergies, but I guess I can’t rule that out since you most the time aren’t born with allergies.
My last resort is to take him to the vet, but if anyone else has any suggestions less costly than the vet and hopefully just as effective, I would like to hear what you have to say.
JUST GOT BACK FROM THE VET. IT WAS IN FACT ALLERGIES. I GOT PILLS FOR HIM THAT HAVE TO BE GIVEN 3 PILLS A DAY/TWICE DAILY FOR 5 DAYS… THEN 3 PILLS A DAY FOR 5 DAYS… THEN 1 PILL A DAY FOR 5 DAYS.
I ALSO HAD TO GET A MOISTURIZING SHAMPOO AND LEAVE-ON CONDITIONER.
HOPE EVERYTHING WORKS! THANKS FOR THE HELP EVERYONE!
