My dog has hives, can I make him more comfortable?

Question by Mmhmm: My dog has hives, can I make him more comfortable?
My golden retriever is absolutely miserable, I saw last night that he had hives and he is scratching constantly- we’ve had a brush with this last year at the same time-but that was the first. I have another dog and a cat and both are fine, so I think it’s allergies?

We’ve made an appointment with the vet and are taking him tomorrow. In the meantime, I’ve given him some benedryl(ok’ed from the vet) and gave him a bath using a sensitive skin/oatmeal based product that the vet reccomended.

I feel so bad, is there any other way that I can make him more comfortable until tomorrow?

Question by Koter Boters misses Rufus!: How can I get my brother’s boxer to get more meat on him?
My brother’s Boxer is very skinny! Yesterday when I fed him I saw him turn and when he turned all I saw were ribs. He looked like he was just skin and bones but when he isn’t turned he doesn’t but he is still skinny.

Should he eat a better food or just eat more food?

My brother feeds him once a day but when I get there to feed him in the morning the dogs are both hungry. So I am thinking they need to be fed twice a day!

Rufus the boxer eats generic store brand food if that helps any. Both Rufus and Merle don’t have allergies or anything so I don’t see a prob;em with the food its just that Rufus to me needs to eat more.
Thanks! I have a bag of canidae my dog’s don’t eat so I will take some over to my brother’s house and see if they like it. I will feed them twice.
My brother’s other dog is ideal size and he is a Blue Heeler!
I do feed them wet food but its junk like the dry food! I don’t think my brother knows much about dog food thats why he buys what he buys at Kroger.

I will bring a measuring cup with me to see how much they eat. My brother doesn’t use one he just uses a sauce pan.
Thanks I will try and make the satin balls sometime when I have more money! My dogs might even like them!

If a store brand is all you can afford I suggest Kirklands brand sold at costco its alot better than purina or iams and it doesn’t contain corn

also a vet check should be done to be sure he doesn’t have worms or another un seen problem

also twice a day would be better. check the bag for how much to feed.

Question by Sarah: Is it possible for a dog to shed more because he/she is sick?
My dog was diagnosed with Pancreatitis yesterday… rough. But anyway she is doing *much* better. But I’ve noticed she is shedding EXCESSIVELY. She is a lab, so I know that labs shed a ton. She used to shed a lot, but we started her on a better food and she stopped shedding buckets. Now she sheds moderately. She is allergic to pollen, so whenever she would have an allergic reaction she would shed *buckets*… her hair would basically fall out! But since her allergies are gone and it’s no longer pollen season, her shedding is low. But recently, in the past 3 days, she has been shedding a TON!? Why? She hasn’t had an allergic reaction, and she is still on her healthy dog food. I was wondering if a dog could start excessively shedding if they are sick. She has Pancreatitis, which means she was dehydrated and she had a fever… she was also really stressed. Did the stress cause it?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks barefoottrimmer! She is getting much better, and I just figured her shedding was a side effect. The vet said she will call today so I will ask her then. Thanks!

This can be common with illnesses/diseases. The immune system is compromised and the dog’s system is struggling to heal and survive. Excessive hair loss is a common side effect. You could mention it to the vet, however. Hope she continues to improve.

Question by Ma: Pom, fixed, 8yrs old….How can i help her to be more healthy and secure with me.?
A few weeks ago, i got this little princess pomeranian. She is very friendly to everyone, but when we are alone, she goes and hides under the bed (where she will stay for hours) unless i pick her up and put her on my bed. Sometimes she plays on my bed n makes nest out of my covers; today she kept putting her paws on my hand to get me to keep petting her. She is 8 yrs old: from 6 wks old to a few months ago, she had only one family. Because of new babies’ allergies, they gave her to a lady….who now gave her to me. She was 8 # before she was given and then was 2#when i got her. My son says she is over 4#now. She was being fed baby food n table scraps there. I have tried 3 different foods and she just wants people food. I take her to pet stores and let her try out foods, but she doesnt seem to like them. (she loves CHEESE FLAVORED DOGS doggy treats). I mix chicken and rice in with the dog food and she eats it. She has had the runs for a couple days, but seems better tonight.Someone told me that poms get ANAL BLOCK?Could that be why goes out to potty so much? She has had SEIZURES which the original vet said is because she has HYPOGLYCEMIA, so she needs to eat more often. When i go to pet her, she acts like i am going to hit her. So weird. When i say, “come here Molli “(in a cutie voice), she runs under the bed n wont come out for me, just for my adult son(unless i say “Go for ride?”) Molli is blonde n white. Her “weepy eyes” is bad, AngelEyes sells a supplement with TYLOSIN AS TARTRATE, so expensive ($ 35 for tiny bottle) Cant i get that cheaper (not having to buy their brand)? She is so precious, but i cant seem to find a dog food she will eat….any suggestions about that? Her nails were long, so i clipped them. Her fur was matted and she smelled, so i bathed ( suggested to me to use baby shampoo..is that good?) n blowdryed her n put some NOVA PEARLS SPRAY on her(she didnt fuss either). She’s had her shots btw, n i have her vet records.

It was wonderful of you to take this dog in, and it sounds like you love her!

Maybe she was mistreated since you said she flinches when you go to pet her sometimes? You could try offering her a tiny treat before you go to pet her — this way, petting will become a positive experience. You said she likes cheese doggy treats, so try those.

I suppose that, i’d let her come to me until she got adjusted. I wouldn’t call her unless i had to — since she goes under the bed when she’s called. You could try sitting on the floor more often, and i bet she’d come to you if you ignored her?

After she’s adjusted, you could do some training with her — there are a lot of free resources for Dog Training on the internet. This way, the two of you could bond… you could teach her one thing at the time (like to heel, for example), and take it slow. Praise her when she does what you want.

OR you could even take her to an obedience class… this might also help you two to bond, and you’d also be around dog people, and might get some good help and advice about working with her on some of your issues. It’s an idea.

I’m not sure about her eyes. If you can find a Pomeranian breeder, perhaps they could help you with this, and give you an idea of something to use which would be less expensive.

i’m glad Molli has you!

Q&A: Allergies or something more serious?

Question by ?rogue?: Allergies or something more serious?
I have a 2 1/2 month old puppy that I adopted from a shelter about 3 weeks ago. He’s recently started itching very badly, had some dry flaky skin, small red bumps come up on his belly and small patches of hair coming out. My mother-in-law seems to think he has an allergy to something in the environment because here small dog has the same problem. He’s not been around any dogs that have mange or skin ailments. I’ve tried giving him a bath with puppy shampoo, medicated puppy shampoo, and the in between bath wipes (afraid if I wash him too often his skin will dry our and give him even more problems). What could be the possible problem here?

Answer by Rotten Rotts
It is allergies, could be food or environment. Until you know the cause you can’t know how to treat it.
