Each time he threw up he did not seem sick after he plays eats drink poops pees as usual except for this morning when he looked sad until I gave him a cool bath then he ate drank and played he has been fine since It was also very hot today. he has been dewormed not on any meds and overall a very active happy loving puppy…should i be worried or is it a heat allergy, motion sickness or something simple like that?

Question by HD: Rhodesian Ridgeback with persistantly high ALT, all else normal?
The vet & I are stumped… my 9 year old Ridgeback has been running persistantly high ALT for the past 3 years, but all else is coming out normal.

She eats only dog food (Iam’s Low-Residue), no people food.
Bile Acid tests – normal.
Ultrasound – normal, if anything liver was a bit small.

She has been on 475mg Denosyl for 6 months & the ALTs keeps rising.

Urine ph has always run high ~7.2+, which is controlled with 500mg Vitamin C. Saliva ph is a healthy 8.

She behaves fine & doesn’t look her age. Her eating, drinking, urination are all normal. No fatigue/depression issues.

She did have a tooth repair in 2003, in which the doggie dentist did a root canal and used human-grade filling compound. She had an allergic reaction to a bug bite 7 years ago, but seems to have outgrown that allergy.

I’m not wild about putting her through a liver biopsy….

Any thoughts???
Just in case anyone else is search of liver disease advice — this blog was the most helpful and concise info site I found.

Question by Marina D: My beautiful female shihtzu is in heat for the second time and she’s almost 3 in August.. Is this normal?
My beautiful female shihtzu is having her second heat cycle and she’s almost 3 years old in August. I have not had her spayed because she’s been having issues with food allergies and is on medication. She survived parvo at 10 weeks of age and after going through treatment. Did the parvo mess up her cycle? She had her first heat at only 6 mos and its been a while and she’s in her second heat cycle and like I said she’s turning 3 years old in August.

Has anyone had this happen to their shihtzu?
I know the heat cycles are different on some dogs but could the parvo caused her cycle to be irregular?

I have known plenty of dogs who had parvo at a young age who didn’t have long lasting problems in adulthood.

No, it isn’t normal that she is only having her second heat cycle at an age of 3 years- generally female dogs have two heat cycles per year. Your pup should have had at least 4 of them by now.

Food allergies aren’t any real reason to avoid spaying your girl- I have seen plenty of allergy prone dogs make it through surgery just fine. As long as your vet is confident they can spay her without a problem I would get her spayed- she will be healthier and happier in the long run.

Do people think it’s normal to have sick dogs?

Question by Freedom: Do people think it’s normal to have sick dogs?
Sure seems to be a new question about dogs throwing up and coughing and skin issues and allergies and one illness after the other on this site. Why do you suppose that is? Has anyone ever thought … man this should not be normal or this common? The vets office parking lots are full daily all day.. WHY?
Nutrition, over vaccination, over medicating in the name of prevention? I assure you there IS a reason and it is NOT normal every day issues dogs should be having. Why do you think dogs are so sick?

Just like people, dogs get sick and can have medical issues. Not every little thing needs vet attention, that’s why people like to ask here- so dog savvy people can share their opinions. It DOES alarm me though, when you see a life threatening issue going on, and the owners’ posting ?s about it 4xs a day, even with dozens of people telling them to get to their vet.

Question by spike_1920: My dog is shedding more than normal and the vet doesnt know whats wrong?
I have a 1 and a half year old Chihuahua/Beagle mix. We got her from the pound around November of 09 and she was fine. we got her fixed and she is up to date on all her shots. Here recently with the change of the season she started to shed, which is expected. about a month ago however, she started to shed excessively.

we took her to the vet and the vet said that it was allergies, he prescribed medicine and said if it doesn’t get better to come back. well it got worse and so we took her back, he did a skin scraping to check for mites and mange. both test came back negative. the vet said that he didn’t know what it was and recommended i go to a dog dermatologist. i checked on prices and the specialists is really expensive and i may not be able to take her. we’ve changed my dogs food from pedigree to natural choice, venison and rice, because i thought that it may be a food allergy. well she’s been on the new food for 2 weeks and i haven’t seen any improvement at all. we don’t feed her any treats, table scraps or anything, just strictly the food.

I live in an apartment, with no other pets and am a clean person. my dog gets a bath once every two or three weeks. because the vet said that if i give her a bath more often than that it would hurt her coat.

im basically looking for any advice on what to do. her stomach/chest area is almost bald and even if i could take my dog to the dermatologist the closest appointment isn’t until the middle of may. If anybody has any ideas/comments please feel free to voice them.
it would be a miracle if she is pregnant as we got her fixed the week we got her. i dont think we got the virgin mother mary of dogs lol.
