Question by Emily W: Any over the counter antihistamines for my itchy dog?
I have a year old American Bulldog who has terrible allergies. We have had him allergy tested and know exactly what he is allergic to, which turns out to be almost everything including dust mites. We have switched his food to vegan dog food and are even considering spending the 500 dollars on allergy injections that aren’t guaranteed work. I was hoping that someone might have some recommendations on some over the counter meds that might help with his occasional itching. Anything BUT benedryl, which I know doesn’t work for him.

The food that he is now on is really helping, but he is also allergic to many trees, grasses, and weeds that I have no control over. He is even allergic to the mite that is found in every 9 out of 10 bags of dry dog food! Any info would be VERY appreciated!!
I would really appreciate it if only people who have had a similar problem would answer this question. What I am looking for is advice from those who have lived with it just in case there is something that I haven’t heard that would help my boy. I have exhausted all other options, including multiple talks with my vet!! Appreciate the advice about allergy shots and the oatmeal baths! Thanks guys!
Also I will absolutely not do steroid injections because of the health problems.

I had a Frenchie years ago that had the same problem. He was allergic to everything. We tried all kinds of things, but eventually started him on the allergy injections. It worked wonders for him!!!!! We did it for three years and he was a TON better. He still did take an prescription medication also, cannot remember what it was, but there were no OTC meds that did any good at all.

Q&A: My old dog licks himself, all over constantly?

Question by Maria18: My old dog licks himself, all over constantly?
He is a snouzer poodle mix, pretty small dog and is 11 human years.
As long as I have had him, he will lick a certain spot constantly, for hours! especially at night when we are in bed trying to sleep.
It isn’t always the same spot too. Could it be allergies? Dry skin? I heard poodles have very sensitive skin.
Maybe he’s OCD?

I would say allergies. I have an elderly pomeranian mix and she too licks herself when her allergies are acting up, almost like she can’t stop. I think we notice hers more at night because she sleeps in our bed, so her movement wakes us. He may need allergy meds.

Question by janineej: My Pomeranian Mix 13 yr. old dog has been going bald for over a year.?
I have tested him for Cushings disease and allergies, but it all comes back negative. His hair is balding in a very large patch on both sides of the same area of the body which leads me to think it is definitely hormonal. If it is allergies, the skin is silky smooth, but I have taken him off of all beef and chicken. He scratches his body all the time and scratches his rear end on the concrete all the time.

Have you checked his anal glands? That is usually the cause of the butt dragging. Has your vet checked a full thyroid panel? How about checking adrenal glands? Liver function and kidney functions can also point you in the right direction. With this ongoing for a year, unless there have been a million other tests and treatments, find a new vet! Have you seen a dermatologist? That would be my suggestion at this point.

Question by ?Bailey?: What would you do with neighbors feeding your dog despite your telling them over and over to stop?
We’re very, very careful with what my dog eats. We’ve told this neighbor who we share a fence with to stop feeding the dog junk but he keeps doing it. He’s only trying to be friendly I think and loves dogs but he doesn’t know any better and has no idea what does can and cannot eat and is feeding our dog foods we’d never feed him. I’ve told him time and time again that he’s making my dog sick and that my dog has severe allergies and needs to be on a special diet so he’d stop. What can be done with people like this who really are only trying to be friendly and just don’t know any better and apparently have the attention span of a mosquito?

I’ve been walking my dog for now in the fenced in yard to keep him healthy and stop him eating things he shouldn’t but I’d really like to not to have to do that if I didn’t have to. This is my house and my property and I’d like to just enjoy it and at the same time, feel that my dog is SAFE.
No, actually no vet bills so far. I know he’s given the dog stomach problems and diarrhea when all this started but, like I said, I’m out there to supervise him constantly now. Which is what I’m trying to avoid…. I want my yard back. I want my dog to be able to enjoy his yard safely and not have to worry about it. And no, my dog is not a barker at all. Like I keep saying, I’m out there with him nonstop in the yard but even if I wasn’t, he still has just never been a barker. This neighbor is the problem even though he’s not trying to be. He has no idea what’s good or bad for a dog or what is toxic to dogs or what you can or can’t feed them.
I do like the idea of giving him the proper food and am going to see if that will work, though, I don’t even know if that can get through to him.. it’s worth a try.
Oh no, we take very good care of the dog. Most of the people on my street come to visit my dog when he’s out in the yard because he’s so friendly but this is THIS NEIGHBOR’S way of being friendly with him. He does not think he’s under fed. No one thinks we abuse him. He is very well trained. We spent many hours training him. People just like the dog and come to visit him. This neighbor is not quite all there and doesn’t comprehend after being told over and over. I’m worried because he doesn’t know dogs. Does not know what is good, bad, toxic, etc., to dogs. My dog is well trained, does not bark, is not a nuisance to anyone and is VERY friendly with all the neighbors and other dogs on the street.

you should make him feel the same way. feed his dog large amounts of aspirin or chocolate and see how he likes it. this should stop all confrontation between the two of you

Question by Raven: Does any one have an idea on how to help 2 dogs that are allergic to fleas get over the itching non stop?
I went to a friends house 2 days go and I didn’t know their house was infested with Fleas. Well both of my dogs have frontline on but it doesn’t matter when the house is infested. They both have red dots on their skin and itching like no tomorrow. Can you give me an home remedy to help the itching. They haven’t really stopped itching since we got home. I have several bites on me just from sitting in my friends chair. She told me she only saw one flea on her dog. After I got there which at that point didn’t bother me because of my dogs being on frontline. Guess I was wrong.

Thanks I am kind of feeling really bad because of my dogs having an allergy to fleas. Thanks for the help. Still no fleas on them though glad to say :)
Cookie – I know a lot of people that used K9 Advantix and Biospot. Their dogs had fleas on them the hole month. As soon as they switched to Frontline the fleas stopped in 2 weeks. They thanked me for letting them know about frontline. I won’t ever go to K9 Advantix and Biospot. My vet told me to stay with frontline because the others don’t work. Thanks though but I think you need to talk to more than just one person. I have talked to over 20 people with problems from the flea meds you recommend. No one that I have talked to have had problems with frontline. There has been 100’s of people that are on frontline that I have talked to. Works at a store that sells frontline and K9 Advantix.

Answer by Nekkid Truth!
1 mg of benedryll per pound of body weight

if that doesnt help, your dogs may need something from the vet. Flea bite allergies can be a vicious cycle– the skin gets irritated and itchy, the dog scratches it, and causes more irritation, which causes more itchiness.
