Question by Pudgygirl: My Pug is losing his hair in patches…?
I have taken him to the Vet. 3 times now and he has given him a Cortisone shot for allergies, next he put him on Predizone since the Cortisone shot didn’t work and placed him on a Prescription Diet, and our last visit he did a skin scraping as well as blood work to test his thyroid. The skin scraping results showed 2 types of problems, one being staph and some sort of bacterial infection. Fortunately his thyroid is fine. He was then placed on 2 different antibiotics. The Staph infection is cleared up but he is still patchy, oh and they itch him like crazy. He doesn’t have demodectic mange, in case someone suspects that…..that was my first thought too.
Anyways…here’s my question….we recently moved to our new home and this is when all this started…there is a small patch of persimmon trees in the backyard and I noticed he was eating some of the persimmons. Does anyone know what effect persimmons can have on a dog? I really suspect these persimmons could be a part of the problem because I raked them all up the other day and have noticed that he’s not itching as much now that he doesn’t get to eat the persimmons.
Thanks for any help.
He’s 3 years old and there does seem to be some hair growing back in the patches. Benedryl has been his only relief but I hate to give it to him constantly.
You can bet that the trees are coming down regardless of whether they are the problem….they draw flies too!
Thank you so much for the many answers I am already receiving…they are all very helpful thus far.
Thanks to all that replied to this question…over the weekend my husband and I cut down all 7 trees, cleaned up the debris as well as used a tractor and removed the stumps and roots so that should take care of that problem! LOL
Thanks again!

Honestly, your best bet at this point is to have bloodwork done for allergy testing. Your vet will draw the blood and send it off to VARL.
You will get a detailed list of everything your dog is allergic to and how severe each allergy is along with recommendations as to how to deal with the individual allergies.

Question by Sherman L: Why does my dog have patches of dark fur and itching on her back?
Our two year old toy poodle mix has always had flea allergies and dry skin. The worst problem is itching on her back, where the fur has turned brown (she is off-white in color) in areas that she tends to chew the most. I don’t think the chewing is the cause of the discoloration because when we keep her back covered with pajamas she doesn’t tend to chew as much but the discoloration and itching remains. The skin does not seem to exhibit any discoloration except for the usual inflammation and irritation from chewing or scratching. Could this be some sort of yeast problem, and if so what can we use to combat it?

Not sure what could be causing this. I would take her to the vet an see if there is something new going on with her.

Question by kc3: Patches of hair loss?
My 2 year old beagle mix has had very red skin for about 6 months.mainly on her belly. Recently she has started to loose patches of her hair. She is still very active and eats regularly. We recently switched her dog food to Califonia Nature..chicken and rice. Even with the food change, there are no new symptoms, but she is still loosing hair in patches. Anyone ever had this problem or have any suggestions. The vet just want to run expensive tests and say it is most likely an allergy.

Does she scratch? If so you can give her a little bit of benedril every night. Maybe childrens benedril if she’s under 50lbs. Check with vet first! That’s what I give my boxer that has allergies.

Question by slackpanda: My dog bites and scratches his skin until huge patches of his fur is gone and the skin is raw with blood.?
I have a Labrador(rocky) aged 15 my grandmother has a dachshund(chico) aged 4-5 and my auntie has a
Shiba-inu(fern) aged 2-3.
It’s quite a vicious circle and i’ll try and make it easy to understand.
I live with my family and dog Rocky. My grandmother has Chico & lives with her son(my uncle) who’s dog is Fern.
Chico and Rocky are the eldest dogs and Fern is a youngster.
The problem first started when my Uncle first got Fern who’s currently on Anti-cancer tablets for our problem.
Chico and Fern live together so the problem spread to Chico who has given it to Rocky, Each dog Itch them selves to the point their fur is gone the skin is bleeding and gets infected, We all have the same (useless) Vet, And it costs a bomb every time we take them, They keep telling us they don’t know what it is and we’re beginning to give up. It’s starting to really bug me, as I know this problem is only happened when Fern arrived and because my dog is very old I feel like I cant enjoy my last year or so i have with him, He’s got enough problems as it is with joint pain and being deaf and blind with old age.
We have tried bathing him in special shampoos
Tea-tree spray
and a bunch of tablets but that cost us like £70 and they did nothing but give him a loose bum.
he’s currently on Prednisone steroid, but this can’t be long term because that’s very damaging for him.
Fern is on Anti-Cancer tablets for humans. Vets think Fern has an allergy, but to what?
If all three dogs are doing the same. Itch Itch Itch Bite Bite Bite Scratch Scratch Scratch Chew Chew Chew and it’s all night, no joke!
Please help me, I’m going insane!

The “Vet” should take a skin scraping to see if there is a Mite affecting the poor dogs. In the mean time try some “AloeVera” gel on the itching. it is very soothing. You can get it at the super market or chemist.Poor dogs I can imagine how they feel.
Good Luck

Question by Love’s Excelling Way: What could the gray patches on my dogs pink stomach be? They suddenly appeared about a month ago.?
I had my dog groomed about a month ago. I asked the groomer to shave all his hair off underneath him on his tummy, because it gets in the way of his pee stream and he gets pee on his fur underneath.
Well… his skin was nice a pink. Then after a few days, big gray patches/spots started appearing on his stomach and penis. What could that be? I heard it could be allergies. I hope he is ok.

Its probably one of 2 things.. fungus or hyper-pigmentation.
if it is outside in the dirt it could be ringworm (fungal infection)
*treat with antifungal cream over the counter
Also if outside..the shaved hair gives access to sunlight and can cause hyper-pigmentation.
Observe and then treat if nessesary..or consult your vet.
