What are you feeding him? Food is one of the primary causes of allergies in dogs. Many dogs are allergic to corn, wheat, soy and even beef. If your dog is on a grain based food (a grain is the first ingredient on the bag), that may be the problem. There are several brands that are very good. Eagle Pack, Innova, Wellness and Canidae are all good brands.

Q&A: What’s Wrong With My Face? PLEASE HELP!?

Question by Anthony Medina: What’s Wrong With My Face? PLEASE HELP!?
My face is always itchy. It has a bunch of red spots on it. It’s always dry. It has these weird rash things around my mouth and nose which look like torn off or dead skin. These rash spots are bad if i touch them or anything like that a bad pimple develops there. It looks bad to say the least. My face is also flaky. Could all of these symptoms be attributed to my unhealthy eating habit and lack of sun and exercise? I also have 5 dogs which usually never really get bathed often. They shed hair all throughout the house. Could it be allergies? I usually only have two meals a day, fast food in the morning and at night. Please help are these things causing my face to break out like this?
Pleas help it’s bad

What’s wrong with my dog? Please Read.?

Question by Queen E: What’s wrong with my dog? Please Read.?
Hello everyone!
I have a 3 year old Maltese and I recently took her to
a dog spa for a haircut (i trust this place because she’s
gone there around 5-6 times now). Today when i got home
from class I noticed that she was itching a lot and licking
her paws and so on. I figured it was an itch so I brushed
her hair, in the process I noticed that she had open wounds
and others seemed like healed cuts. I started getting worried
and figured that the salon had something to do about it, but
my dog kept on scratching. I looked everywhere online and
the only answer I could find was ticks or fleas. I checked for
both, it got so bad I had to bathe my dog and I checked her again.
Later on I noticed that she’s the one hurting herself and biting
into her own skin. She’s done it all over her paws and in other
body places she can reach. I’m really worried as to why she’s doing
this. I had to bandage her feet and paws to keep her from biting
and wounding herself. Anyone have any answers for me?

Besides fleas, or anything.
I know it can be allergies but as far as I know
my dog is not allergic to anything.

Thanks for your help!

Take her to the vet and have her tested for allergies. You can always spray bitter apple on her feet. My first dog had a habit of licking himself in one or two spots, so we sprayed it every time we found him licking. He’d quit for a long time, and find another spot. So we’d spray it. We realized it was just a bad habit he had.

Question by rubber_fryed_chicken: Vet or Holistic Vet help please for 2 Great Pyrenees (fleas and underweight)?
This will be long, I apologize.

I have 2 Pyr’s, one is 7 1/2 one is 2 1/2. These are my 4th and 5th Pyr’s respectively, so I am quite familiar with the breed. I have home cooked for them since the pet food scare back in 2007, except for recently, due to time constraints and lack of job. I fully plan on resuming their normal diet next week, Wednesday to be exact.

I recently took them on a job for 1 week where they contracted fleas. I do not usually treat them for fleas unless I see signs of of infestation due to the garlic and brewers yeast which is normally present in their diet. I also use a tea tree oil spritz in their regular grooming routine, and this regiment usually allows me to forgo any chemical treatment. But this year has been an exception, unfortunately.

Tonight I bathed both dogs in a good flea shampoo and treated them with frontline. Their skin is a mess due to both the fleas and the corn allergies they have. I am leery of spritzing them with the tea tree spritz due to the alcohol content but am instead thinking of making a salve which includes almond oil, tea tree oil and neosporin ointment. I am concerned that the almond oil will smell attractive to them and they will ingest it along with the other ingredients. Please let me know what you think about this.

But that is not my MAJOR concern. While bathing my youngest Pyr, I have discovered he seems to be EXTREMELY underweight. I mean his wet body is about as wide as a Grey Hound. His hips are prominent and I can feel each rib bone. He looks like a big wet head… What I am thinking is I need to increase his Iron, Calcium and Protein intake drastically, but on a slightly gradual basis. I plan on doing this with Liver, cheese, eggshells, lentils and spinach along with vitamin fortified cereal (bran flakes) and possibly eggs.

Please tell me if you think I am moving in the right direction, I need to get weight and nutrients into this baby FAST!!
No tapeworm present in stool. Carpets, All bedding and upholstery has also been treated tonight.

I also just noticed that he is missing a toe nail and the toe is slightly swollen and that there might be an underlying infection which is affecting his appetite.

If I were not unemployed, my boy would be at the vet and this question would not be on here.

Bring him to the vet. There may be a medical issue underlying his condition, and even if there isn’t it’s a good idea to get professional input before changing his diet when he is so underweight.

Need some advice on my dog (please read full description)?

Question by jaded_illusions78: Need some advice on my dog (please read full description)?
I have a dog who has swollen areas on his skin not just in one area.

I believe this is due to either a different grass allergy, tick drops…especially tick drops.

I called my vet at 2 am in the morning and told me to try to wash with dawn soap a few times and I did this about 3 or 4 times very well. He is still in lots of discomfort and whining and crying so I took him INTO the vet at 3:30 am. He is on prednisone, benedryl and still gets some slight swellings and still whines in now alot! She believes this to be discomfort and so do I.

I called again today because he is whining alot still she prescribed him some tramadol to ease some discomfort. She noted that sometimes its takes 1-3 days to recover and that it can be very uncomfortable for the dog.

I also have him in a big dog collar (Elizabethan collar) aka cone collar so he doesn’t over lick to make matters worse…so he whines and still tries to get to the affected parts but cannot get to them.

My question is all this me just worrying too much because the whining really bothers me, the pacing bothers me, and I hate seeing my dog in pain? but is it really pain or just lots of discomfort due to not being able to get to those spots he wants to get at.

Do you think I am more over reacting to my dogs discomfort…given the time it will take for him to heal? I

What do you guys think?

please note the tick drops were on one area not the whole body and I washed his whole body just in case its more systemic.

Call your vet and get an antibodic shampoo it’s called Malaseb it will help with the discomfort also some. It might take a couple of bath’s but it will definitely help it did with my dog. Let it stay on him for a little while also at least 20 to 30 min. I hope your baby gets better
