Question by I Fart Tiny Sparkles PTssss** ™²: My dog is old and shes got a real bad itching problem, my family think they should put her to sleep ??
They think she is suffering . I tell them all dogs itch . they have her on prevecox for athritis pain, glucosamine for her joints. She has to take allergy medicine and thyroid medicine. We have to wash her 1 a week maybe more because her skin gets greasy and stinky . She also has really bad ear infections constantly and we have done everything the doctor prescribed to get them better.
PLEASE help ! I dont want them to put her to sleep . She still walks and kisses my face in the morning . she still wants her tummy rubbed . If we can just find something to help her ears and her itching then they wont put her to sleep !

I think you are bathing her too much. He skin may be dry and thats why it’s so itchy. Make sure she doesn’t have fleas and when you do give her a bath make sure to use something soothing for the itch like oatmeal shampoo or even head and shoulders.

Q&A: my dog has a problem, need suggestions?

Question by twilightinsanity: my dog has a problem, need suggestions?
I will describe the symptoms, and the treatments so far…

Basically her symptoms consist of a super itchy stripe of skin that goes from her shoulder blades to her tail.
Also she burps a lot and throws up once or twice a week for no apparent reason, often in the morning when she first gets up.

I have tried at least 5 different kinds of allergy food, to no avail – actually, she puked more often while eating some of the brands of food (ie Wolf King)

Vetrinarians (she has seen 4 so far) all want to start a prednisone routine (a shot and then a couple months of pills) I wont allow this since she has very bad withdrawls from steroids. (she has three legs – her mother sat on her – and has been given way too many antibiotics and steroids in her life due to the surgeries to remove one leg and operate on another twice)
I am treating her with KetoChlor (clorohexidine and ketoconazole) shampoo incase of possible candidia overgrowth, after 4 baths in 5 days she is not changed
She’s a Lab/Collie mix BTW…

Vets usualy just try to sell me prednisone, or cortizone, or they try to sell me whatever type of food they advocate.
Food dosent seem to help, and the steroids are not healthy, and are a temporary solution.

When I bathe her she is not itchy untill she gets mostly dry again, then she’s itchy again.

I dunno what to do about this, and frankly neither do the podunk vets I have taken her to.

I feed her yougurt (2 tbsp day)

She has NO fleas.

ANY advice is appreciated.

sounds like it has a mange or something . But with the pukeing your dog hasnt rolled in something and tried cleaning it off itself because it could be chemicals causeing it. tea tree shampoo is good for itchy coats i use it on our dogs they suffer with dry skin.

You would be better off to talk to your mom than to go ahead and find the dog a home.

Q&A: Anyone else’s dog ever had this problem?

Question by Felena: Anyone else’s dog ever had this problem?
My dog is a half black lab, half pit bull 1 1/2 year old gal. I took her to the vet a couple months ago trying to figure out if she had mange. the vet insisted she didn’t, and that it was a food allergy. She told me to switch her food to a different protien source and test different foods out to figure out what she was allergic to. Well, I started by eliminating chicken, and other things like corn and wheat, because I’d heard those things commonly cause problems. I’ve tested everything I feed her- I’ve even switched to a natural, home-made diet…her itching and redness never stops. I gave her Benadryl, like the vet said I could, and while she stops itching for a while I can’t tell if it’s cuz it helps or if she is just to sleepy from the pill to care.

Well, the dog is still itchy. And there are more symptoms.

Basically, her fur is thinning. Like, I can see her skin on almost any part of her body. It’s not coming out in clumps or patterns, just in general all over. And She’s itchy, and her skin is red. She’s got some little red bumps, like sores, in various places. I showed these to the vet when she was there.

The wierdest thing about this is that when we pet her now, we get little red bumps on our skin and it burns and feels itchy. I imagine that’s what my poor dog feels like all over all the time. She also become rather aggressive with most dogs which I think is related. I think she feels so messed up she just doesn’t want to be messed with. I could be wrong…

but anyway, I am making an appointment to take her to a different vet. I don’t think it’s an allergy to her food. I am doing my own research on what it could be, but I was wondering if anyone here has had the same problem with their dog? I don’t have a ton of money to throw at a vet who’ll barely take a look at her, but maybe if I can get a few ideas on what it could be we can try doing some tests for some specific problems and get it solved in less time with less money.

Thanks. i appreciate anyone taking the time to try to help us out.

It sounds like she needs some bloodwork done to see if there is anything else going on, like a thyroid problem or a systemic problem. Alopecia and skin problems are often a sign of an underlying disease process.

If the new vet can’t find anything wrong other than allergies, then she should get on the most basic food you can find (like Natural Balance fish & sweet potato) and you should also start eliminating household allergens. Carpet shampoo, febreeze, your shampoo, hair spray, or detergent & fabric softeners could all be triggering an allergic reaction.

Question by ?emily?: My shih tzu has very dry skin on her back & butt, it looks like dandruff, what can I do to remedy this problem?
I JUST took her to the vet on Monday for an ear infection and they did a full check up and nothing was wrong with her.

Today I was brushing her and noticed that she still has dandruff flakes that come up when I brush her (had noticed this previously but I figured it was because it had been cold the week prior to noticing and we had the heat on).

She isn’t itchy, and she seems fine, but I don’t think it can be good that shes so flaky like this. She only gets it on her back (top part of her body) and her butt (right by the tail).

* We live in South Florida so I don’t think it’s a humidity problem.
* She eats EVO brand grain free dog food reduced fat. (my vet mentioned switching to just generic iams salmon and rice or iams potato and lamb – is that a good idea?)
* She is brushed once a week and bathed usually twice a month.
* She goes to the groomers every 2-3 months.
* She does apparently have a beef allergy, but she doesn’t eat anything beef related anymore.

Would getting a humidifier for our bedroom help?

Please don’t say take her to the vet, we were JUST there. It’s not a parasite or mange issue. It’s totally a topical problem and I’m wondering if there is a supplement or something I could be giving her to get rid of the dandruff, maybe even wash her in head and shoulders ? lol. Any help is appreciated!!!!
Oh I forgot to mention, when I bathe her I use SPA products. The shampoo and conditioner are both for dry skin and hydration, she always feels SO soft after I use them, but I don’t want to overbathe her bc that would dry her out right?
also forgot to mention her hair is kept in a “puppy cut” not the long flowy show coat – so the dandruff is even more obvious..
