Question by Vivian L: I want a puppy but my mom won’t let me! My dad doesn’t care, but i can’t get one if my mom doesnt approve.
I am 12 and I found this dog online in a pound nearby. My family, me, my older brother, my mom and my dad, all are allergic to the hair, but the allergies aren’t bad. Sometimes we don’t even get an allergic reaction. The worst things that have happened to us are itchy skin and light hives. My 13 yr old brother and I each own betta fish by ourselves. We are very responsible and get good grades (a’s, b’s) and we almost never get in trouble. Also, i’m asian, i can’t really clean my room, because its already clean. I have plants that i take care of and water everyday and i play the piano. When i ask my mom if i can get a dog, she says its too much trouble because most of my relatives live in L.A (I live in sacramento), and we visit them atleast once a year. We also travel to other states and countries once a year for fun. I could keep the dog in the backyard + my aunt has dogs, so when i travel, i can leave it there.
(We don’t do many chores, but i still don’t think it’d work) vet costs to
Here’s some info on the dog i want to get:

Kahlua’s info…
Breed: Chihuahua / Terrier (Unknown Type, Medium) Mix
Print Pet
Info
E-mail Pet
to Friend
Size: Small 25 lbs (11 kg) or less
Color: Brown/Chocolate – With Tan
Sex: Male

Age: Young
Kahlua is:
already neutered

up to date with shots
Kahlua’s story…
Kahlua is about 2 years old and weighs about 13 lbs. He gets along great with other dogs. I spent some time with this little guy and found him to be quite friendly. He’ll wag his tail in greeting and enjoys taking walks with you. He enjoys petting and is not timid. Thank you for your interest.

My advice is get a hypoallergenic dog ( dogs that cause less allergies then other dogs). The reason they cause less allergies is becuase of their special hair. Unlike other dogs that have fur that they shed all the time, these dogs have hair more like ours that barely sheds. People with allergies are usually allergic to the dander of the dog, and if a dog sheds less then you will contact the dander less.

These are hypoallergenic dogs

Afghan Hound

Barbet

Bichon Frisé

Bolognese

Greyhound

Havanese

Maltese

Poodle

Portuguese Water Dog

Schnauzer

Shih-Tzu

Silky terrier

Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier

Welsh Terrier

West Highland White Terrier (westies)

Yorkshire.

And maybe you can get a small dog which you have travel with easily and take with your on your trips ?

As for convincing your mom I can’t help you much here. I’m in the same situation and my mom still wont budge, even after I do excelent in school and do plenty of chores.

I have a very Itchy puppy?

Question by evans512: I have a very Itchy puppy?
I got my Puppy two weeks ago, and when I got him he had small bumps on him, mostly on his under side, I asked the breeder/seller what was wrong with him and he said the litter got into ants. So we got him anyway, thinking it was nothing oatmeal shampoo and neosporin couldn’t fix. Well it is now two weeks later and puppy has had those places heal, and new spots turn up. I have been reading online and it seems like he has this “rash” called hotspot in his armpit, and in the creases of his legs. His fur is still thin on the top of his body, and he has some patches where it looks like he scratched so much, or maybe from when his litter mates were playing. I can’t figure this out. He has a vet appointment this coming week, for his check-up and shots, and I will have the vet look at it for a proper diagnosis. He is very itchy, and itches all the time, making his “rash” worse, and new places pop up. I don’t know if he has allergies, or some skin disorder. He eats Purina puppy chow, the “veggie” kind, I bathe him often, which makes me think I am drying him out and making him itch, but He needs baths. And I thought the oatmeal was helping at first when bumps started going away. He has zero fleas, and we also have another dog and cat living in our house with no fleas, ticks, or any of his symptoms. They eat different food (they aren’t mine). When he goes outside to potty he likes to jump around in the leaves and grass, which makes me wonder if he can be allergic to grass? If so how do I train him to stay out of the grass? I am just so confused, and I just want to know what I can do to help my poor guy in the meantime between now and when he goes to the vet? He itches intensly and it worries me.

sounds like allergies to me. To stop the scratching and licking you can buy HYDROXYZINE. Try that. It comes in a pill form and it is taken every 12 hours for about 12 days until the itching has stopped. Depending how bad the rash is you might need to get a cone so that he stops licking while on the medicine.

Buying a Greyhound as a puppy?

Question by crownofkings: Buying a Greyhound as a puppy?
Im almost done with college and i was planning to move towards VA beach kinda more into the countryside but still close to VA beach.

And the place i am looking to buy has a lot of space… and it will all soon be mine.

I can’t wait.

And i would like to have a dog, just because its the countryside and the circumstances would be a little more different. the dog won’t bother people because their is nobody elses property for atleast an acre. And since its such a huge space having some dogs around would be very helpful.

I’ve done some research on greyhounds and id rather not buy a retired racing dog.

Since their was so much space i was thinking of spending some free time in building a small home built track. Just a simple oval. None of that pro racing stuff and i don’t plan to “race” the dogs i get.

Since greyhound pups need an outlet i will probably get 2 because they can’t be left alone for long periods of time. And let them race on the track and i think it would be great to just watch my dogs run.

And i can just do some 100m sprints with them somedays when i feel like i need a tough workout. Of course i’d loose since these things can go 40mph if ur dog is a beast. But maybe they’d just play around wit me and let me win once in a while.

I don’t have a problem raising the dogs, and their circumstances seem easy to accomodate. They need indoor because of the weather and they can’t handle cold/heat. They have thin skin and little fat so they need a lot of soft bedding which is very easy to deal with. And so are their raises feeder/water bowls.

Only problems i see are dealing with tick meds, and if they need to go to the vet for a serious issue.

But im the type of person thats allergic to animals. Well im just allergic to anything dirty. and Cats are freaking dirty. im super allergic to cats. Its not i can die type allergy but its annoying as hell. I can deal with smaller dogs and a lot of my friends dogs are the “non shedding” type.

the internet has been telling me these dogs don’t have that under coat which causes all that shedding.

But im not sure if im fine with it. Because i haven’t actually done any real extensive testing on it myself.

If you are the animal allergic type like me, or if you know somebody like me. That has been around greyhounds and in that same environment for an extensive periods of numberous accounts and they had almost little to no allergies. Please let me know if the greyhounds effected you or ur friends.

and how does a greyhounds coat feel like? it looks really shimmering so im guessings its that more softer type hair. I hate the dog hair that feels like its bristle brushes. Like labs. Dauschund dogs have nice hair i’ve felt their fur and im hoping the greyhounds is somewhat like theirs.

And please do not think i am capable of even trying to raise a racing dog. im a pure ameature and i wouldn’t know how to teach them to race, and im not trying to professionally race them or recreatoinally race them. I just need them to get that outlet to workout because they are hyperactive when young.

So please do not think i will beat them and starve them and just make em race 24/7 until they break in half. If that is what is making you second guess giving me helpful information on greyhounds.

Thanks.
Jenny i live in the US. their isnt a single puppy breeder inside 500 miles of my Area code…

The net says most of the greyhound racing is in the british isles. So ima have to get one shipped from there to here.

Or me go to there and take it back here.

Go see an allergist and get tested: you aren’t allergic to cats because of their habits, its a protein in their saliva. Being allergic to cats does not mean you’re allergic to dogs; the proteins are different.

Go to a local retired racing greyhound event and play with the dogs; if they make you wheeze or break out, then you can’t keep dogs.

If you want a greyhound puppy, go here:

Q&A: Things to help with puppy allergies?

Question by Christiesteezy: Things to help with puppy allergies?
I’m pretty sure one of my puppies, Alfie, has allergies. He itches but I don’t see any inflamed areas or bumps or parasites so I think it’s allergies. I think it might be because the previous house he came from was tiled and I have carpet so it could be my carpet but he is upstairs most of the time and we haven’t had our carpet cleaned upstairs (so it can’t be cleaning solutions) but could he just be allergic to carpet?
Also I really want to help him and his itchiness so I considered the food. I will be purchasing some better quality food soon. But I wonder what I should get? I’ve heard of grain free food is good and also some dogs are allergic to chicken? So then what should I be looking for in the food?
Are there any tips that anyone has from experience?
And I will be taking him to the vet but I can’t until the 15th because of my lack of income and transportation at the moment.

Have you checked him for fleas? When I got my two dogs as puppies, the lady told me she picked off a few fleas from them. I bathed them in the sink with liquid Dawn dish-washing detergent a few times. It didn’t seem to work, but I think you’re supposed to let them soak for awhile. The very next day when I took them to the vet, they got a flea treatment and haven’t see another flea on them since. For the food, grain free is really good, raw food is another option as it helps greatly for dogs that are allergic. You can try foods that have fish, venison, or lamb. If you go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com click on index (lower left side) and look up the food you’re feeding him, that will give you an idea if it’s good or bad.
