Question by Mae: Dandruff in my shiba inu puppy, refusing to pee outside?
I just bought a shiba inu male puppy 1 and half month ago, now he is 3 and half month. I was brushing him with the wire brush when suddenly the dandruff came out all over his body! Including his head. I was shocked to death…ahaha just kidding. However, i have never bathed him before, i only used the dry cleaning powder that requires no water. Before i massage the powder on to him, i use this wet tissue on his body, the wet tissue is supposed to be used for dog only, but i’m unsure as it is made in China. (i am in shanghai, china now).
The thing is, i wanted to know is this normal for puppy to develop such a thing in winter time? Now is winter here in shanghai.
Is it an allergy? Has anybody any experience with shiba and allergies? I am thinking maybe food allergy? Cos it is impossible to get flea allergy in winter?
I brought him to a vet and he said it is no allergy, it is just dandruff. But like most vet here, i cannot believe them 100%. He did not take a blood test or whatever, he only looked at his skin and claimed: dandruff, no allergy.
So then he gave my shiba his first bath today, which include a lot of drama act from my shiba, he kept on peeing on the guy who bathed him and scream his shiba scream until the guy cannot take it anymore and asked me to stay close to my shiba. Which i did, and my shiba suddenly turned very sweet, just kept his mouth shut and lay there as if he did not throw a crazy fit 1 minute ago.
After the bath, i checked my shiba very carefully, and i found almost no more dandruff. How does this happen? Does dandruff can be eliminated in just one shower? Will it come back? I am asking this stupid questions because believe it or not, i never have dandruff in my life, i know, i mean, i dont know myself why this happens.
And if anybody has experience with allergies in dogs, what is the symptom?
Another thing is, 1 and half months ago i told my shiba to pee and poop in the toilet on the newspaper. I only told him once and he went there to pee and poop automatically which surprised me and made my jaw drops. Now, when i tried to take him outside in the morning just after he wakes up, he REFUSES to pee and poop outside even when i brought the newspaper and put it on the grass. I waited for 3 hours and he still REFUSES to do it outside. When i brought him back home, he went to the toilet immediately and did his business. What should i do???
Thank you so much for the answers!
Mae
ughhh… i forgot to say that i live in an apartment and on the 9th floor….and my shiba only poop and pee on the newspaper inside the toilet/wc and nowhere else. Its just that i wanted him to do it outside instead of inside the toilet. I make a special area for him inside the toilet as his peeing and pooping area, he NEVER pee or poop anywhere else. I know i should be satisfied with this, but i think peeing and pooping outside is better and more natural for him?

Heating in the home causes everything to dry out, even our poor doggies.
House Training
House training your dog is simple if you follow a few basic rules. Remember that puppies younger than 10 to 12 weeks have little control. Accidents will always happen when teaching puppies to be clean in the house. Be kind and patient, and reward handsomely all outdoor elimination. Always remember that dogs do what works for them. Make outdoor pottying work really well for your puppy.
1) The puppy must have NO time unsupervised in your home. NONE. If you are not directly watching the puppy, it should be in the crate, or outside in a safe area. You MUST watch the puppy at ALL times when loose in the house. Use baby gates, crates, or tie the leash to your belt.
2) The puppy should sleep inside the crate by your bedside. This way you can hear if the puppy should happen to need to go out during the night.
3) You must go WITH the puppy outside for ALL trips for elimination. You must have treats with you. When the puppy is urinating, say “GO PEE PEE” in a nice praise tone of voice the entire time. When she is finished, pop the treat into her mouth at once, and praise praise praise. This should be something she gets at no other time, like tiny pieces of string cheese or boiled chicken. Same for defecation. Say “GO POOP” while she is going, and food reward and praise afterwards. You must observe and reward ALL outdoor potty time.
4) Keep a schedule. Feed at the same time, and walk outside at the same times. Your pup needs at least 4 trips outdoors each day, and 5 is probably better. Pup needs to go out at wake up time, lunch time, 4-5 PM, after dinner or any other meals, and before bed. Younger puppies may need to go out much more often.
5) Use a key word each time you go out. I say “Let’s go out!!” in a happy tone of voice each time I’m opening the door to go out with the dog.
6) If you catch the puppy IN THE ACT of eliminating in your house, CLAP YOUR HANDS, say AH AH, OUTSIDE!! And immediately rush her outside. If she finishes there, do your usual food reward and praise.
The keys to getting your dog reliably housetrained are:
SUPERVISION: NO loose time in the house if you are not watching
REWARDS: ALL outdoor elimination MUST be observed and rewarded. If you only do this ONE thing, your puppy will get housetrained.
PATIENCE: Anger and punishment have no place in dog training. Elimination is a natural and pleasurable experience for your dog. You can teach her to not soil your house, but punishment will NOT help. It will only teach the dog to hide when she needs to eliminate.
If you have applied these techniques carefully for 4 weeks and you are still finding spots or piles after the fact, it’s time for stronger measures. Roll up a newspaper and fasten both ends with a rubber band. Keep it handy. The very next time you find a spot of a pile that the dog has left behind, whip out that newspaper, and hit YOURSELF over the head firmly several times as you repeat “I FORGOT TO WATCH MY PUPPY”.
Works every time.
