Question about my puppys allergy?

Question by jAKESGiRl*: Question about my puppys allergy?
I just recently adopted a blue gotti/edge pitbull. She is 13 wks old. Really a gorgeous dog but she has really bloodshot eyes with CLEAR gooky stuff coming out it forms a crust around her poor little eyelids. Also around her snout, she is bald and her skin is kind of rough. It is nowhere else but her face and she isn’t missing much hair. It doesn’t bother her and she has no funky odor it just WON’T go away. The man that gave her to me said that it is hay allergies and that it would clear up by keeping her inside and away from hay and grass. I take warm cloths and clean her eyes for it only to return moments after. I haven’t brought her to the vet YET because my
Expenses are strapped and I wanted to see if there was any at home remedies or anything I can do before I rush off to the vet. She is updated on all shots and vaccines and we live in a clean home and is not allowed outside without supervision. I’m just worried the hair won’t grow back and that if her eyes don’t clear up, it may lead to health problems?

This is an issue for the vet. This is probably caused by the backyard breeder you purchased her from. Breeders like that dont care for health testing their animals, and only selfishly contribute to the overpopulation of dogs in this world, especially pits.

Why is my yorkie puppy’s hair so short?

Question by Michelle L: Why is my yorkie puppy’s hair so short?
We got a new yorkie puppy about 6 weeks ago, she is 12 weeks now and her hair is very short. She has not been groomed or cut, believe me…she doesn’t need it! My mom wonders if she is a full breed because of this (she has a yorkie also). She has the markings and color of a yorkie and looks like a yorkie in the face and she is CKC registered. My last yorkie had a lot of fluffy hair at this age. Does it vary when their hair starts to grow? We saw the mom but only a picture of the dad, she came from a very clean loving home. The mom seemed very healthy and happy, we even played with her. Our yorkie is very healthy with no allergies or chewing or anything like that, she probably weighs about 3 lbs. now and she eats a natural, holistic dog food. Her ears are not up yet either. Any information would be helpful, we love her just the way she is, but we are just curious.

Puppies mature at different rates so she may need time. I have seen Yorkie’s that have shorter coats and ones with longer coats . She may not get a longer coat until she loses her puppy coat at about 6mo to 1 year. He ears will stand up with time

Question by Red: What are some possible reasons why my puppy’s fur is falling out?
I have a 4.5 month old miniature schnauzer puppy. About two weeks ago his hair started falling out in clumps and has continued. He is now almost completely bald along his spine from his neck to his tail with random quarter to half dollar size spots on his side.

His skin is not red or irritated and I rarely see him scratch or pay any attention to the affected area. He’s not alone often and most days he comes to work with me. It doesn’t seem to bother him or affect his behaviour. Around the bald spots his hair is full and soft and fluffy.

I’ve been to two vets and spent $ 700 but neither vet could tell me what is wrong with him. He has been tested for all kinds of parasites and fungal infections. They gave me antibiotics, benadryl, special wash and vitamins for his food.

One vet said it might be allergies but that doesn’t sound right. I’ve known a lot of dogs that have allergies and I have never known them to have clumps of hair fall out all over.

He gets a bath every 4 weeks by his groomer and she has used the same shampoo on him since he was 13 weeks old. He has been on the same food (Innova Puppy) since I got him from the breeder. No new treats, no new environment changes.

I did put Frontline Plus on him about 5 weeks ago. Could he have had a reaction to that 3 weeks later?

I’m stressed and I don’t know what to do. I’m frustrated because neither vet I took him to could tell me what is wrong.

I know when my cat had fur coming out in clumps it was a hypothyroid problem. Has your vet checked your dog’s thyroid enzymes?

Small bumps on my puppy’s head, neck and back?

Question by jennarationnext: Small bumps on my puppy’s head, neck and back?
I have a 14 week-old miniature dachshund puppy and about a week ago I noticed a small (about 2mm) bump on the top of her head that almost resembled a wart. Since then, a few have appeared down her neck and onto her back, as well as one near her anus. She has been scratching moderately since I’ve brought her home and has had a bath with oatmeal and aloe vera shampoo in attempt to alleviate her itching, but to no avail.

The bumps are not red or discolored and there are no signs of hair loss. Also, I did see a flea on her the other day and will get Revolution for flea control when we visit the vet.

Could this be a sign of an allergy to flea bites? Food allergies? I have her on by nature puppy formula right now which has no wheat, corn or soy, but have been considering switching to something that doesn’t contain chicken or beef.

She has an appointment to see our vet on Tuesday, I was just wondering if anyone has experienced similar skin problems with your dogs.
I doubt that it’s a tick infestation because the only ticks found in this area are the poultry tick and the spinose ear tick that is found on livestock; it’s rare for either to be found on dogs.

I never even considered flies, but that theory may be possible– I live near horses and I know it hurts when the flies bite me!

Answer by Laura ?
It takes only one flea to drive a dog bonkers.

You’re on the right track wrt your suspicions (fleas, other parasites, allergies, etc.)

I’m glad you’re going to the vet, they’ll be able to diagnose better than we can here.

PS: Be sure to also discuss spaying your dachshund within the next 2 months while you’re at the vet’s. =)

PPS: Cool avatar!

Our 3 year old dog eats our puppy’s food?

Question by Flusterated: Our 3 year old dog eats our puppy’s food?
We have a 3 year old terrier mix and a 6 month old lab. The pup eats Authority large-breed puppy food, while the terrier has been refusing his own food and eating the puppy food for the past 3 months or so (we’ve never had a problem with him eating before). I realize that him eating puppy food means extra calories, but didn’t think anything of it as he’s pretty hyper and runs a lot. Well lately we’ve noticed him itching intensely, his skin is pink all over (more than normal) and he has developed little sores on his skin. (Neither have fleas – they’re both on Advantage as a preventative). My husband thinks the skin problem is from the extra protein in the puppy food – could that be it? We have tried separating them by feeding them in separate areas of the house and having the older dog go back to his regular food. He will finally eat it when he’s hungry enough, but the itching hasn’t seemed to stop much. We haven’t changed anything in the house to where we can pinpoint an allergy source other than the dog food. Wanted to try and figure this out on our own before going to the vet…any suggestions?
The dogs are not free-fed – they are measured amounts. They are separated now by a gate when they eat (they weren’t before, which I guess is where the problem started) Thanks for the answers.

He’s most likely allergic to something in the food. Feed the dogs in separate rooms and don’t let the older dog get any puppy food. It should clear up in a few days if he doesn’t get any more.
