Q&A: Is vinegar safe for treating my dog’s yeast?

Question by ErgoF: Is vinegar safe for treating my dog’s yeast?
My female boxer has food and environmental allergies that are currently being treated, but as a result she has developed quite the yeast infection on many parts of her body. I am quite confident that the allergy treatment is working (treating the causes, not the symptoms) so that is not the question. Some of the research I have done on her yeast skin problems has indicated that vinegar is a good treatment and prevention for yeast on dogs. Is straight vinegar safe to spray on her skin or does it need to be diluted first? If so, to what proportions? Thanks for the info.

(I have asked this question before and got two very rude, ill-informed answers, so before you just tell me to take my dog to the vet, here is some more information:

My dog goes to the vet a minimum of once per month. She has had a serum test to determine the specific allergens that aggravate her and as a result she is on a limited ingredient diet and medication to handle some of the unavoidable environmental allergies. She takes an omega-3 supplement with her food. She is also given a prescription antiseptic bath at least once per week. Steroids are not an option as they bring about terrible side effects in her and are just plain not good for her anyway. Antibiotics are not getting rid of her itchy, smelly yeast infections (yes, skin scrapings have been tested and it is just yeast) so her vet recommended researching homeopathic remedies which I have been doing. My question above is for anyone who has had experience using one of these remedies or can recommend another one that they found to be effective. Thank you!)

Your vet … recommended that you go and research homeopathic remedies?

that’s interesting

vinegar might sting inflamed skin and especially mucous membraney type skin.

try it watered down first, see how it goes … but generally, I hold and extremely dim view of simple household item remedies.

Q&A: Is OTC Benadryl safe for pets?

Question by Crystal: Is OTC Benadryl safe for pets?
I have had some conflicting information regarding this. I want the best for my pet, however, I can’t afford to take him to the vet over every little neurotic concern I have with him (I am worst than a lot of parents about being paranoid about their human child)

He’s a 6 year old chih x I adopted 5 years ago and We have has some allergy issues as well as back issues. I have taken him to the vet several times and spent entirely too much money. But I want him to pain free and safe! To the point…I have had some conflicting answers when asked this question so I want to try to narrow it down. I have had a few people tell me that it’s okay to give my dog a half benadryl and I have read some info online saying this isn’t safe to do. His eye seems to be giving him problems and I have taken him before about his eye watering/staying shut and his skin allergies. I can’t remember the name of meds they gave him at the time but did refer to it as “the same thing as benadryl” so his eye is doing it’s thing again waterying/he’s holding it shut and I want to give him benadryl to see if that helps before I take him to the vet but I don’t want to harm him in anyway.

Yeah, it’s fine. I gave Benadryl to my cat while flying from Alaska to back east and it just makes them drowsy. I would probably only give the animal a half of one to start and see if that works but I wouldn’t exceed 1 tablet just to be safe.

SAFE home remedies for Mange???

Question by kellyd: SAFE home remedies for Mange???
Does anyone have any SAFE home remedies to try for mange? I bought a puppy at the local animal shelter in Dec, that had mange and we took back. Now my older dog is showing signs of mange.
We originally thought it was an allergic reaction to something she ate (dog food with yellow corn meal). We’ve been talkin with the Vet about the allergies. Well, this weekend I gave her a bath, and chunks of hair fell out. I’m afraid that she’s had mange all along, and we confused it with the allergies. Today, her foot is raw and sore, and the vet is closed for holiday. Any suggestions? We have her knocked out on benedryl, and a collar on until we can get to the vet tomorrow
Not that I have to explain myself for people like pitbull, but the puppy I had overnight. I asked 4 different people at the shelter if the puppy was sick. They assured me she was not. I was instructed by my vet to take her back because she was a public health hazard. I have 12 years invested with this dog I have now, not 1 night. Also, I”m a single mom, working my way through college to make a better life for my daughter. While I understand that that dog was probably put to sleep, I was following the instructions of my vet. I am HOPING he will NOT give me the same instructions for this dog tomorrow, as, 1) she was healthy BEFORE the neglect of the animal shelter that sold me that puppy, and 2.) I have had her for 12 years, she has been a loyal dog and a part of my family. Before you judge, maybe you should find out the whole answer. Funny that you feel you CAN judge, yet have everything blocked so no one can respond to you.
I don’t think my dog can take the Ivemectin…she’s a border collie, and that medication is toxic to herding dog breeds :(

Question by Betsy: Is it safe to leave my dog alone after having a sedative?
My dog is currently at the vet. He had a terrible allergic reaction, and they gave him a sedative so they could shave around a sensitive spot of skin. They have also given him an injection of preventative antibiotics, started him on some allergy pills, as well as a topical spray. Is it safe to bring him home and then go back to work for a few hours? Or should I stay with him in case of a reaction?
