Question by Ally: Itchy scabs all over dogs skin?
Its my parents dog and I don’t see her as often as I would like. For a while now she’s had a spot on her side that has itched her, but it wasn’t really discolored but it kept scabbing over, we though it was because she was scratching at it and it lost the hair because of the scabbing. They were putting neosporin on it and a bandage. Over the past week/week and a half its gotten a lot worse and spread all over the rest of her body. She has a vet appointment, but does anyone else know what this might be and what might be causing it? She’s an almost 15 year old Bichon. Only thing she’s had in the past were food allergies which she’s on natural balance duck and potato for.
Pics when bathing her:

Since people are restating vet I’ll be more clear, vet appointment is tomorrow afternoon. We already had the appointment before I posted

There’s no telling what it could be.
It could be mange or some other skin parasite or bacteria.
A trip to the vet is a good idea and should happen ASAP.

Question by Jennifer S: My dog has scabs please help I am desperate?
My dog broke out a few weeks ago in scabs on the side of her face. We currently can’t afford to take her to the vet, I’m ashamed. I don’t believe it’s mange because it doesn’t smell & she has not been scratching it at all. It seems to be spreading & I’m concerned about her & my family. She has always had skin allergies. But since she’s not scratching what would cause them to show up? How to treat at home?

Not sure but in many areas it is ILLEGAL not to treat an ill pet. You need to find a way to pay for treatment or surrender him to animal control. What you are doing is cruel, and depending on what the problem is, it may affect you or your family as well.

Question by Erin G: Dog with red sore spots that turn into scabs?
My 1.5 year old lab has red sore spots that turn into scabs on his belly. He has had them for a while, but they never seemed serious or a problem. He had skin issues about a year ago when he was just a puppy. I put him on premium food and it went away, but he has always been a bit itchy I believe, and it is not fleas. I’m wondering if it’s allergies or if it’s serious that I need to go to the vet. Last time I took him to the vet she acted like I was stupid because I brought him in because he was itching a lot. She had asked me if I ever owned a dog, which I have when living with my parents. I’m a 21 year old college student and this is my first dog that is mine and I make all the decisions for. So I want to know if this is serious enough to go to the vet.
He is on Pro Plan Lamb & Rice I know it’s not the absolute best food, but the Lamb seems to be better for him than chicken or anything else

If you are sure that your dog is protected against fleas and their bites, there is a medication called Sulfadene made by Hartz that you can find at your supermarket in the pet aisle. It is for “hot spots”, and I used it for years on my dogs. I understand that some dogs are allergic; so do a test patch first.

Question by Lisa H: Black scabs on dog?
My dog has what look like black scabs on his body. They are not on his belly or legs. Just on his head, ears & back. He does have allergies & I was giving him an antihistimine & steroid but ran out & never had it refilled so he went about 3 weeks without it. I recently started giving him Benedryl again. Took him to the vet but vet has no clue what it is so prescribed him a 500 mg cephalexin (steroid) 3x per day & told to increase the mg of Benydryl & watch him. Vet said steroid may make it heal slower, but should help any discomfort. She said nothing about mange & I’ve seen pictures of this and it doesn’t look like mange. He doesn’t have fleas either. Could the allergies cause the skin to get sores & scab? She also said to bathe him in the medicated shampoo we have.
Ahh….okay..thanks for clearing up that he’s on an antiobotic! My husband is the one who took him and he told me it was a steroid! LOL The vet said to watch him and see if it clears up over the next few days and if not to take him back in. He doesn’t spend a lot of time outdoors. Usually just out to potty and back in. Occasionally he will sit out in the sun with the other dog.
I will continue to monitor him over the next few days though.
Dried blood makes sense. That they look like. They are not round though, they are mostly long and thin. I know it’s not from him biting himself though cause some are on his head and ear. He could be scratching himself though. I’m going to give him a bath tonight with medicated shampoo and hopefully some of the scabs will clear off. And with the antibiotic & benedryl he’ll hopefully start to heal. He does have very dry skin.

Is your dog outside alot? did you ever think of the possibility of flies eating at her? they target that area on a dog, they sell ointments at the pet store for fly bites, go to another vet,
