she scratches, scratches, scratches what to do?

Question by Carolyn D: she scratches, scratches, scratches what to do?
I am pretty sure it is a food allergy; probably corn or even worse gluten. She has sensitive skin because when we got her (at 7 months old) her coat looked like she had dandruff. She is a black lab so it was obvious she had a skin condition as a pup; her prior owner had her on ekanuba low fat – why put a pup on that? Dogs growing up are like children; they NEED fat in their diet. But you dont want to overdo it, either. I immediately put her on ekanuba sensitive skin, and it took a while to control it. Her vet recommended several things which worked, however, since ekanuba has stopped making sensitive skin, she is scratching herself again crazily and this time I cannot control with the other things I did. She is now on a total fish diet – only omega fatty-3 in the dog food nothing else and this is hard to find – , and I have tried all of the things the vet had me do before, but now cannot control itching, head shaking. Probably yeast infection and will need vet intervention again. Any suggestions?

My dog scratches herself until she bleeds!?

Question by Carson: My dog scratches herself until she bleeds!?
My dog continually scratches herself leaving rashes, sores, and bloody cuts. She’s been to the vet a million times now. She has allergies constantly. We’ve changed her food to a special hypoallergenic diet, shes had antibiotics, has special shampoo in which shes bathed regularly, she’s had antihistamines, steroids, everything under the sun. My dog has more medication the the pharmacy.
I’m committed to taking care of her allergies and doing what she needs but my concern is her constant scratching of her neck, armpits, and face. She is tearing up her skin, leaving wounds and bald spots. What can i do to prevent her form harming herself? I’ve seen those things called soft paws but is there any other options?

Question by sunny: My 2 1/2 yr old mixed breed dog recently is getting big very itchy bumps he scratches so much. They are on his
They are on his side and mostly on his back. They are “clustered” maybe 6-8. He scratches them and they bleed. I have given him medicated baths, put anti-biotic cream, hydrocortizone cream, which brings some relief but they dont go away. Has anyone had this happen to their dog?
I have changed his dog food thinking it may be an allergy. He comes back in the house like that when he goes out to use the bathroom or just “hang out” in the yard. He doesnt get it from being in the house, only when he comes back in from outside. It isn’t ticks or fleas. If they were ticks I would see them would’t I and be able to “pull them off”? And fleas, I would be able to see them. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP

Take him to the vet. It’s probably an allergy.

Question by slackpanda: My dog bites and scratches his skin until huge patches of his fur is gone and the skin is raw with blood.?
I have a Labrador(rocky) aged 15 my grandmother has a dachshund(chico) aged 4-5 and my auntie has a
Shiba-inu(fern) aged 2-3.
It’s quite a vicious circle and i’ll try and make it easy to understand.

I live with my family and dog Rocky. My grandmother has Chico & lives with her son(my uncle) who’s dog is Fern.
Chico and Rocky are the eldest dogs and Fern is a youngster.

The problem first started when my Uncle first got Fern who’s currently on Anti-cancer tablets for our problem.
Chico and Fern live together so the problem spread to Chico who has given it to Rocky, Each dog Itch them selves to the point their fur is gone the skin is bleeding and gets infected, We all have the same (useless) Vet, And it costs a bomb every time we take them, They keep telling us they don’t know what it is and we’re beginning to give up. It’s starting to really bug me, as I know this problem is only happened when Fern arrived and because my dog is very old I feel like I cant enjoy my last year or so i have with him, He’s got enough problems as it is with joint pain and being deaf and blind with old age.

We have tried bathing him in special shampoos
Tea-tree spray
and a bunch of tablets but that cost us like £70 and they did nothing but give him a loose bum.
he’s currently on Prednisone steroid, but this can’t be long term because that’s very damaging for him.

Fern is on Anti-Cancer tablets for humans. Vets think Fern has an allergy, but to what?
If all three dogs are doing the same. Itch Itch Itch Bite Bite Bite Scratch Scratch Scratch Chew Chew Chew and it’s all night, no joke!

Please help me, I’m going insane!

The “Vet” should take a skin scraping to see if there is a Mite affecting the poor dogs. In the mean time try some “AloeVera” gel on the itching. it is very soothing. You can get it at the super market or chemist.Poor dogs I can imagine how they feel.
Good Luck

Question by Mary O: My dog is 5 yrs. old. She has developed red skin and she scratches constantly. Have tried everything. Thanks?
My 5 year old dog, a female shitz shu, started scratching and her skin turned red and felt hot the touch. We took her to several vets, all of who felt it was an allergy, but no one could figure out what she was allergic to. We changed bedding, food, shampooed carpets. We gave her tablets to prevent fleas, although I have never seen one on her. We also changed the shampoo to a pet shampoo with oatmeal and alovera in it. We give her,on our vets advice, 12.5 mg every 4 hrs, of Benadry. The vet has given her several steriod shots which had no effect at all. We do not have the money to keep taking her to the vet. She’s a beautiful little dog who has been a great companion to my husband who is recovering from a stroke.Does anyone have any idea what may be going on. Thank you, and our dog thanks you.

Have you checked your laundry soap? Everything gets washed in it; bedding, sheets, blankets, towels, etc.
