Question by Rita Fimon: dog itches and scratches?
We have a beagle and black lab that are outside a lot. We live in a really dry climate (but had a wet spring and early summer). They are constantly scratching, especially at the base of their tails. Do they have allergies or dry skin? I’ve not seen any evidence of fleas.

My dog used to itch in that exact same spot and would chew it until it was raw and bleeding. It could possibly be allergies or a hot spot. I would say to try some hot spot medication that you can purchase at any local pet supplier as well as try some benedryl. Believe it or not dogs can have it!! I suggest getting the liquid kind and some kind of syringe. dogs can have 1 MG per pound. I would say get a syringe from the pharmacy to measure it out. It will make the dog drowsy but if its allergies it will also help. If not definitely take them to the vet. Good luck hope this helps!!

My 5 year old dog, a female shitz shu, started scratching and her skin turned red and felt hot the touch. We took her to several vets, all of who felt it was an allergy, but no one could figure out what she was allergic to. We changed bedding, food, shampooed carpets. We gave her tablets to prevent fleas, although I have never seen one on her. We also changed the shampoo to a pet shampoo with oatmeal and alovera in it. We give her,on our vets advice, 12.5 mg every 4 hrs, of Benadry. The vet has given her several steriod shots which had no effect at all. We do not have the money to keep taking her to the vet. She’s a beautiful little dog who has been a great companion to my husband who is recovering from a stroke.Does anyone have any idea what may be going on. Thank you, and our dog thanks you.

They are on his side and mostly on his back. They are “clustered” maybe 6-8. He scratches them and they bleed. I have given him medicated baths, put anti-biotic cream, hydrocortizone cream, which brings some relief but they dont go away. Has anyone had this happen to their dog?
I have changed his dog food thinking it may be an allergy. He comes back in the house like that when he goes out to use the bathroom or just “hang out” in the yard. He doesnt get it from being in the house, only when he comes back in from outside. It isn’t ticks or fleas. If they were ticks I would see them would’t I and be able to “pull them off”? And fleas, I would be able to see them. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP

My dog, Winter, scratches all the time. He doesn’t have fleas. I believe he may be getting bit by ants or he may have skin allergies. I hate seeing him like this. And recently it’s getting worse. Unfortunately, the vet can’t see him until next week. Can you answer these questions for me?
What is the proper dog food to by for dogs with itchy skin?
What is the proper shampoo for dogs with itchy skin?
How often should I bathe him?
-I was doing once every two weeks is that too much or too less?
What else should I be doing until his appointment?
