Question by Pollyanna: My dog has been having severe allergic reactions, can anyone help.?
I have went to 4 different vets in 2 weeks, and so far no one can explain why my dog has almost lost her life to a severe allergic reaction that almost closed her breathing passages. My dog has had blood in her urine, and her tummy is red and hot. I have done everything humanly possible and avoided any trigger for allergies, my floor and anything in her reach is spotless & chemical/dye free. She is on antibiotics but she is still passing blood, her blood test have came up normal . My mom thinks it was the tainted dog food, but is on a mild home-made diet from the vet but only a little better, also her kidneys tested normal. Her hemoglobin (red blood cells) were up. She cleared up with prednisone but they won’t leave her on it, and I’m afriad she’ll go into another attack. Please remember before leaving comments, I have taken her to many vets. Thank you all.

It sounds like she may have multiple sensitivities.
Did any of the vets talk to you about food mites?
My mother-in-law made her dogs there food and microwaved it to kill mites. I thought it was crazy at first but it helped her dogs feel better. Unfortunately, I don’t have the information she gave me on it.

Try to give your dog fish oil pills. They are anti-inflammatory as well as beneficial many other ways. Give the diet a while to work. It sounds like the dog has been very ill.

Question by SHLOVE: My Dogs Severe Allergies/Eye Irritation….?
It has been an adventure with my 2.5yr old yorkie. He has been suffering from what appear to be allergies. 3 different Vets have prescribed him the same ointment, which I cant use on him on a regular basis because it causes damage to his retina.
My Dog has been wearing a cone to keep him from scratching his eyes… and he’s on an elimination diet…. YET NOTHING is changing. He is really suffering with the itchyness of his eyes, and since he’s wearing the cone to protect himself from scratching its very sad… can you imagine what torture that is for him???
I’ve done everything I could think of doing.
1-Changing his diet, to an elimination (so I can find if any foods are triggers)
2-cleaned all my apartment, with Organic crap so that no chemicals could be triggers.
3-I stopped the treats just in case he was allergic to those or something in them
4-I’m even giving him filtered water
5-The vets all say “its allergies” and give me an ointment that in long term use causes retina damage, so I try not to use it.
6-I changed his shampoo to other shampoo, to homemade oatmeal water!!!

I think there is a really expensive test that I may have to resort to, but I dont even know how effective it is… so I’m hoping I can get some advice from anyone first.
I mean, what else can the test tell me? It cant possibly be his diet as he’s already having this “no grain or any other meats he had before this elimination diet” Diet.
It really cant be the chemicals in soaps I use to clean the house cuz I even tried using limited amounts of the organic stuff.. just in case…
I gave him a bath in Oatmeal water ….
Which let me remind you he doesnt seem to be itchy all over only his eyes, maybe nose… but not really….

you must have to use the test that will pinpoint exactly what the allergen is, but it can cost thousands of dollars.

it sounds like it really is allergies but since you have the ointment, you have to use it as prescribed by the vet in order for it to work properly. long term use means that you give it to him every day for the rest of his life for this which is not the case. it is only temporary and if used properly will not cause damage to his retinas, i promise. the vet would not tell you to use it for a temporary amount of time if it was going to cause more damage to the dog. use the ointment as prescribed for the amount of time the vet told you to. by not doing this you are causing the dog to go through more torture and suffering for a longer amount of time. my dog is getting eye drops for her eyes because of allergies

Question by new_mama2010: What can I do about my American Bulldog’s severe skin allergy?
Hi everyone- my 2 year old American Bulldog only gets this problem in the spring/summer time here in Houston, TX:

it starts as large raised skin bumps/whelps that slowly begin to ooze, then become dry scabs for about a week or two, until finally the scabs fall off and he is left with big bald patches all over his body. The skin looks scaly in the bald areas. Sometimes he gets itchy so he scratches himself so hard he breaks the scabs open and they become bloody and it prolongs the healing process. He acquires a new “booboo” maybe once a week or so…it’s a gradual thing but towards the end of the season he looks like a dog in the ASPCA commercial!

Took him to the vet and they had him on high dose Prednisone pills (but after several months we weaned him off cuz they’re really hard on the body) but as soon as we do the symptoms come back. Vet said we should give him Benadryl daily, which we do, and also to try him on 24-hour non-drowsy Claritin pills (Equate brand Loratadine 10 mg antihistamine). Neither of these seem to be helping at all since he still gets these skin problems. So we put topical Hydrocortisone 1% cream on the bald patches and we have Benadryl gel and spray that we use on the spots where he scratches himself…not sure if he really gets any relief from these either.

The vet suggested allergy testing but it’s several THOUSAND dolllars and the treatment would still be 6+ months and is not guaranteed to work either :(

PLEASE, if you think you might know what this is, I would love to do some research on it! He is like my child and so I would like to find some relief for him!! Also, if you have any treatment suggestions or references I can look into it would be much appreciated!

Thanks for your help guys :) I tried my best to describe the booboos to you, but if you would like to see pictures to get a better idea of what I’m talking about, please feel free to email me at jrohrick@yahoo.com and I will be happy to talk with you some more :) Thanks again, all answers are greatly appreciated!

Ask your vet to refer you to a canine dermatology specialist.

This must be very frustrating for you and your poor dog. Seasonal and environmental allergies are a right pain to try to discover the cause.

PLEASE HELP!! My dog has severe itchy skin!?

Question by luvmylillie: PLEASE HELP!! My dog has severe itchy skin!?
I have a 4 year old mix. She has medium hair. I moved about a year and a half ago from Ohio to Tucson, AZ. I have noticed over the last 5 months that she is itching more and more. I know it is probably associated with the weather; my skin is dry too. However she itches constantly and cries and moans when she does, she always wants me to scratch her all the time. I have tried medicated shampoo, she gets evening primrose oil in her food, i have given her benadryl. I took her to the vet a while back ago and they told me she has allergies. Unfortunately I cant afford to take her for tests, etc right now. I feed her dry food and I make a rice and chicken mixture for her food (since the canned dog food scare). I have spent hours researching online, I took the day off work to cut her hair, bathe her and do whatever I need to do. My dog is my world and she is miserable, someone please help. My goal is to get her to the vet in a month, but until then I am desperate, I will try anything

You should try a soothing oatmeal shampoo. This will provide her skin with a lot of moisture. This will not solve the problem but hopefully it will relieve her from some of the pain. Maybe speak to a local groomer, they can usually give you pretty good advice as well. But please get her to the vet as soon as you can for the test.
