Predisone side effects for 13 year old dog?

Question by rothchild: Predisone side effects for 13 year old dog?
Hello everyone,

My parents’ 13 year old dog has been taking prednisone for her allergies. She has gone to the vet for itchy skin and flaking scalp and nothing has ever worked so they gave her two medications, prednisone and another med (will get back to you on that one). I was not around for six weeks and when I went to see her recently, I was so sick at her state of mind. She looked terrible and carried excess weight (she was always a slim dog). The last time I saw her, she was still a happy and playful dog but not last night. It broke my heart to see her so lethargic and cranky. It was a completely different dog. I am aware that she is an old dog and attribute some of her behaviors to age but this was an extreme change in such a short time. She lives with my parents now but she is still my first dog love and I can’t bear to see her like this. Is this a common side effect of prednisone? Are there other alternatives for severe allergies?

Question by acullum85: How long will my dog feel the side effects of a cortisone shot?
My dog had to have a cortisone shot due to a severe flea allergy last week. I hated to give him it but he was chewing his skin off. The last few days he has been drinking a ton of water and peeing in the house which I know is a side effect. Does anyone know how long this can last? He had the shot a week ago.

I hate that shot! The same thing happened to mine, and the side effects lasted about a week. My allergy-ridden beagle, on the other hand, was affected even worse; he growled and stared around with his eyes stretched wide for a whole day. The vet said we’d never do that again, and he gave him pills instead. I guess every dog reacts a little differently.

Cortisone Shot Side Effects In Dogs…..?

My dog was given a shot of the cortisone Kenalog (10 mg) and Depo Medrol (20 mg). It was for an allergy to fleas. It has effectively stopped her itching, biting, and scratching. The problem is that she is drinking excessively and is now peeing frequently in the house. The veterinarian said that the shot would last for a month. She received the shot a week ago on Wednesday (5/16). Should I be concerned, or is this excess drinking and urinating a common side effect?
