Q&A: Chi has a sore ear?

Question by kbabygurl23: Chi has a sore ear?
My Chi has a sore ear I cleaned her ears yesterday and there was no abnormal discharge dirt etc. Today I was petting her and she yelped in pain when I touched her ear so I got a cotton ball and tried to see if there was something I missed yesterday and there was nothing but it was uncomfortable for her and she let me hear it. Her ear is not red and has no smell. I have a dog that gets ear infections from food allergies so i know the symptoms and she has none of them. Is there something else that could be wrong ie. debris in her ear that i am missing? I will be taking her to the vet if the pain is still there tomorrow but this is not an emergency in my opinion so please no take her to the vet nows. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

She might have water retained in there, or like you said, some sort of debris. Has she been shaking her head a lot, as if trying to get something out?

What do you use to clean her ears? Could she have had a small open sore in there that you didn’t notice, and maybe the solution that you used has irritated it?

The vet would be a good idea, if its still bothering her tomorrow. I hope she’s feeling better soon :D

Question by iceteaprod: My Lagatto has been having red sore paws. The first time we saw it we thought soap. or ice or snow or beach?
Each occurrence would stay a while and then go away. Now the vet thinks it could be a food allergy. In the beginning we were not always washing his paws. We thought heck he is a water dog. The problem still occurs.Has anyone had this problem?

when I saw ice or snow, I thought about salt used to melt the snow. That could be the cause if you live in a cold climate, or the allergies as the vet sais. Has he treated him for the allergies?

Dog with red sore spots that turn into scabs?

Question by Erin G: Dog with red sore spots that turn into scabs?
My 1.5 year old lab has red sore spots that turn into scabs on his belly. He has had them for a while, but they never seemed serious or a problem. He had skin issues about a year ago when he was just a puppy. I put him on premium food and it went away, but he has always been a bit itchy I believe, and it is not fleas. I’m wondering if it’s allergies or if it’s serious that I need to go to the vet. Last time I took him to the vet she acted like I was stupid because I brought him in because he was itching a lot. She had asked me if I ever owned a dog, which I have when living with my parents. I’m a 21 year old college student and this is my first dog that is mine and I make all the decisions for. So I want to know if this is serious enough to go to the vet.
He is on Pro Plan Lamb & Rice I know it’s not the absolute best food, but the Lamb seems to be better for him than chicken or anything else

If you are sure that your dog is protected against fleas and their bites, there is a medication called Sulfadene made by Hartz that you can find at your supermarket in the pet aisle. It is for “hot spots”, and I used it for years on my dogs. I understand that some dogs are allergic; so do a test patch first.

My dog has a sore on his tail?

Question by x_bleeding_sarcasm_x: My dog has a sore on his tail?
My corgi mutt is allergic to everything. We keep him, my other dog, and our cat on flea treatment all the time. We don’t have carpet. He has had his issues with itching his fur off, hot spots, etc, and has been in to see multiple vets. For a couple years we were making raw food [bison or lamb with fruits and veggies over beans and rice, beef and chicken are big no-nos] but recently we tried to get him back onto single protein dry food. We have tried venison, and currently he is on wellness whitefish. Currently he looks like a hairless raccoon, so obviously it is time to switch him back to the raw food.

A few days ago, I noticed him chewing his tail, on the top near the middle [its curly] his fur is dense there, but it started getting crusty from some scab he was licking at all the time. Today it looked like it was spreading, so I shaved the area to get a better look. It is swollen in a few areas.and some places it looks like a loose scab, and in other places it is just raised and irritated, and mostly its dry, but one one side it looks moist, but it isn’t like.. open and seeping. Does that make sense? I don’t see any abrasions, like a wound or bite that could have gotten infected….

I put some antibiotic ointment on it, and bandaged it up, but I am worried if the wont is moist, that maybe this wont be the most effective thing. If it is allergies, then switching his food will take care of it, does it sound like it could possibly be anything else? I wouldn’t be asking, but this is already unlike any of the “normal” abnormalities I have seen in this dog thus far.

My poor itchy pig :(

A lot of dogs are allergic to flea treatments. If you know your dog is allergic and was doing good eating raw, I would suggest switching back immediately. Did the vets ever do a skin scraping to check for mange? That’s the only other thing I can think of that it could be.
