Dog with small hair loss and red sores?

Question by Scott J: Dog with small hair loss and red sores?
My dog is a 1.5 year old chocolate lab. He has red sores that are 1/2″ – 1″ in diameter and sometimes oblong in shape. They never appear to be filled with anything. He also has very small areas of hair loss (the size of a pen tip) on his legs. He also got a raised flaky skin patch around his eye that went away and left a small hairless patch. He is on allergy medication and thyroid medication (prior to this issue). He is also on purina EN and Canidae (Lamb and Rice) food because of GI problems (was on this prior to this issue). He was tested for ring worm and it came up negative. Nothing grew in the petri dish. We were treating him with medication, wipes, and shampoo for this (no real improvement). Does anyone have any idea what else it might be? Our vet has given 3 options: 1. Allergies (change his diet) 2. Fungal problem (put on fungal medication) 3. Bacteria problem (put on bacteria medication. Can anyone help me figure out the issue????

My Dachshund is covered in sores.?

Question by Zelda: My Dachshund is covered in sores.?
This has gone on for 2 years. It started out with one pus filled sore that the vet said was from a old stitch. then the biopsy came back as a granulomous fatty tumor. no cancer, no infection.. Specimens went to A&M… No one can figure out what is wrong with her… So my poor dog has 16 sores all over her.. she is miserable and I am heartbroken.. any suggestions?? My daughter thinks it could be food allergies..

Food allergies can cause a yeast infection. Try Hill’s prescription diet Z/D formula. It is a vegetarian dog food. It has really helped a lot of dogs. Don’t give her any treats only the food. See if it helps.

Question by Charlie: Mountain Cur dog has sores on stomach & eats plants he’s allergic to – please help!?
We adopted a Mountain Cur last year from the humane society. He had every issue from hip dysplacia to, nightmares where he’d do a soft attack if you startled him, not potty trained at all, missing patches of hair on feet, 20 lbs underweight but, he is super affectionate and loves dogs. It’s been a year and all issues are gone but new ones have appeared. Before I go on with the issue – I must state – he is NOT the brightest dog in the world. In fact, he’s really sweet and mild tempered but takes months to learn a trick & gets overwhelmed when you use too many words. You can’t say, “come on buddy..get on the couch” or he’ll just stare at you, can only say… “UP”. Anyway….

The past few months he developed blisters or scabbed sores on his belly, armpits &, groin. I took him to the vet and they gave him some steroids & benedryl – said it was probably allergies or that he got into something he was allergic to. After medicine & bathing they all started to go away.

Then, 3-4 weeks ago my husband and I took the dogs for a walk around the block and watched a movie. Near the end of the movie I noticed Jax was pacing (VERY abnormal) when we turned on the lights his face was blown up like he stuck his head into a bee hive. Ears were so swollen they looked like two pierogies stuck to his head and his eyes were almost sealed shut.

Took him to a 24 hr ER expecting immediate service but during the 45 minute wait his swelling went down & he seemed normal again so we left – The vet STILL didn’t speak or note we were there.

After a few days of his swelling, 2 trips to the vet for epi shots, and $ 800 we noticed he was eating the leaves off my Black Eyed Susan flowers in the yard – getting an allergic reaction & puking – then going back out to eat the leaves… WTH?? lol

All plants were removed from the garden and all of his hives/swelling have gone down but he still is getting blisters EVERYWHERE. If I move my hands down his back I can feel scabs every few inches. Looks kinda of like chicken pox on a dog but some blisters are about the size of a pea. He also has large crusty spots under his arms.

We have: changed the bedding, dusted the house, removed plants, stopped giving treats, no more hiking in the woods, and DO NOT use any fertilizer or poisons in the yard what so ever.
My other dog is not showing any signs and both of them are on BLUE dog food for sensitive stomachs.

Ever heard of this?? What could it be? I heard about dogs getting allergy tests but it just sounds expensive.

You may want to start him on a program of about 25 mg Benedryl daily and also use the topical cream on his blisters, this could possible get him through the season of plants that are effecting him/

Good luck, its always such a problem when our animals have a condition and nothing seems to help.

Question by Sandy K: I have a 16 year old female Pomeranian named Pumpkin who bites herself and has sores on her body.?
When I take her for a walk or even when she’s home, she spends most of the time scratching herself and rolling on her back and spinning on her rear end.

Pumpkin also barks a lot now and I know she’s in distress but every time I took her to the vet, all he did was give her a shot of prednisone and antibiotics. That had only given her temporary relief. The vet felt she had an allergy and had termed her skin condition as “moist eczema”. I then heard that prednisone is a steroid and too dangerous for dogs so I stopped that.

I wash her with SulfOxyDex. I don’t think it’s fleas or anal glands because I take her to a groomer who said she does not have fleas. I also tried applying benadryl gel with not much success. Pumpkin also has her teeth cleaned once a month.

Now she spends most of her day in the closet or under the bed . The only peace she gets is when she’s sleeping. Do you have any suggestions on how to treat Pumpkin?
I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

You need to take her back to the vet and tell him that the medicine only worked for a while,nd you have hear so much about prednisone, I think you will find its better to let her finish the whole percription also take to your vet about changing her diet because it might to strong for her now and she might need a adult food. You must find some relief for her she is in pain along with the itching. I had a Jack Russel that did tr he same way and I got her on a better food and she now is great, no scratching or crying. She might not have fleas but she could be allergic to fleas and if one got one her and jumped off. That is what was wrong with my little dog and after I changed her food and she finished her medicine, she was fine.Good luck!!!!!!

Q&A: Puppy with hair loss and sores? Mange? Allergy…?

Question by pamh30643: Puppy with hair loss and sores? Mange? Allergy…?
I have a 10 week old GSD puppy who has recently developed hair loss and sores on her chest, belly, armpits and elbows. I first noticed the symptoms about a week and a half ago, but at that time there were only a few sores on her belly. I thought they were due to fire ant bites because she got into a bed while playing outside, but it has spread quickly and I now know that ants are not the culprit. (she did develop what I thought was a “hot spot” between her shoulder blades prior to the onset of other symptoms, however I do think that is conicidental since topical hot spot treatment has cured the problem.) She has no hair loss or sores anywhere except as mentioned, none on her face, ears or anywhere that is visible without looking at her underside (except for the elbows which look calloused). She has not yet been started on flea prevention, but I am bathing her weekly in bio spot flea shampoo and have not seen any fleas on her. She has been started on heartworm medication. The symptoms actually started very soon after the first dose (8 weeks when I first got her) of heartworm medication and the first bath in the flea shampoo. From what I have read, it resembles mange due to canine scabies, except that there is no visible signs of it on her ears or face and no odor. I am going to take her to the vet, but in the meantime I am curious as to what this could be. I have two other dogs (pomeranians) and they do not have any symptoms. Could it be the heartworm prevention or possibly the flea shampoo?
As I said, the puppy is going to the vet. (FYI, no there are not any 24 hour vets around here). Of course there is an on call emergency vet, but unless they consider it an emergency situation you have to wait for an appointment. I called my vet and explained the situation and set up an appointment for Friday. In the meantime, I was instructed to apply aloe to the affected area to help soothe the skin (no moisturizers yet as it could further irritate the skin). I also thought of the shampoo as a possible problem and will be discontinuing the baths. My other dogs are on Frontline for flea prevention, but of course I can’t start it on her until 12 weeks. I have only been bathing her weekly to keep the fleas off because they are bad around here. She had a couple on her when I brought her home and got them pretty badly soon after. I do realize that excessive bathing could be a problem, but what other options are there before starting the topical flea prevention?

IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT IT IS.

THE PUPPY NEEDS A VET NOW.

YOUR VET NOT OPEN NOW? MOST AREAS HAVE A 24 HOUR VET. GO!

Your d**n curiosity can wait.
