Q&A: my dog has a problem, need suggestions?

Question by twilightinsanity: my dog has a problem, need suggestions?
I will describe the symptoms, and the treatments so far…

Basically her symptoms consist of a super itchy stripe of skin that goes from her shoulder blades to her tail.
Also she burps a lot and throws up once or twice a week for no apparent reason, often in the morning when she first gets up.

I have tried at least 5 different kinds of allergy food, to no avail – actually, she puked more often while eating some of the brands of food (ie Wolf King)

Vetrinarians (she has seen 4 so far) all want to start a prednisone routine (a shot and then a couple months of pills) I wont allow this since she has very bad withdrawls from steroids. (she has three legs – her mother sat on her – and has been given way too many antibiotics and steroids in her life due to the surgeries to remove one leg and operate on another twice)
I am treating her with KetoChlor (clorohexidine and ketoconazole) shampoo incase of possible candidia overgrowth, after 4 baths in 5 days she is not changed
She’s a Lab/Collie mix BTW…

Vets usualy just try to sell me prednisone, or cortizone, or they try to sell me whatever type of food they advocate.
Food dosent seem to help, and the steroids are not healthy, and are a temporary solution.

When I bathe her she is not itchy untill she gets mostly dry again, then she’s itchy again.

I dunno what to do about this, and frankly neither do the podunk vets I have taken her to.

I feed her yougurt (2 tbsp day)

She has NO fleas.

ANY advice is appreciated.

sounds like it has a mange or something . But with the pukeing your dog hasnt rolled in something and tried cleaning it off itself because it could be chemicals causeing it. tea tree shampoo is good for itchy coats i use it on our dogs they suffer with dry skin.

Question by sayswho?: my dog licks his paws SO MUCH he cant walk on them! advice? suggestions? causes? anything?
i have a 6 year old havanese who licks his paws constantly and so deeply that he can’t walk on them for hours afterwards. he does it with such intesity that he pants and his paws are all red.

we’ve taken him to a vet a few times for this but nothing theyve done has really helped. we use all natural cleansers on our floors so i doubt its anything he’s walking on. one vet said it could be food allergies so we’ve switched brands more than a few times but nothings helped. the topical solutions dont do much at all. it’s not a seasonal allergy either.

anyone have any advice or tips? any holistic or home remedies to relieve this itching?

thanks in advance.

Q&A: Aussie toy suggestions?

Question by Aussie mum: Aussie toy suggestions?
I wanna give my Aussie girl something to keep her mind more occupied.
My Aussie is a hard core chewer; if it’s not stuffed (as she seems gentler with stuffed toys) it’s generally gone within a few weeks. Generally kongs have to be black and I caught her getting pieces off those at times even.
I got her a “jolly ball” which I don’t think will be able to finish out the week as she’s chewing it so much. Though the squeaky plush toys and tennis balls last they don’t really give her much mental stimulation.
Things that require food generally don’t work well as she has allergies and the only thing she can really get is her dry dog food, and thus I can’t figure out a way to keep food in kongs for her.
Anyone got any ideas or suggestions?
Basically we need something stuffed or tough, mentally stimulating, and that will make dry pieces of food tough to get at (or maybe explain how to get food to stay in a kong if you can).
Pictures would be appreciated as well.
Add:
Sorry forgot to mention the Buster Cube… She had one once, she figured it out way too quickly and it became rather useless quickly for us.
Edit: Humm seems it wasn’t a “buster cube” after reading the description. Looked like one, didn’t quite work the same…
Kayrn- Sorry, should have mentioned no rawhide. I’ve simply never allowed any of my dogs to have the stuff, and I’m not so sure if they would effect her allergies or not.
Sorry Pug- Most of those toys either don’t suit the mental stimulation part, she’s had an has chewed through, or just wouldn’t work for various reasons (such as the puppy kongs).

Maurice- Thanks for the link, I was suprised when I saw they were only $ 15. I may look into ordering one of those giant balls, though I’m unsure how she would take to one.
Pug- Sorry forgot to add, most of those treats have things in them that would set off her allergies. Sadly she is allergic to some very common ingredients including peanut butter and chicken.

Suggestions for getting dog hair off a couch?

Question by Alison B: Suggestions for getting dog hair off a couch?
I have a woven fabric couch very similar to the one in this picture:

http://shop.visiondecor.com/judy-collection-nail-head-trim-style-fabric-sofa-couch-bcl-judy-sofa.html

My boxer has developed some sort of skin allergy and her hair is falling out, and it is EVERYWHERE… her hair is short so it is stuck down into the fabric of the pillows and the cushions. A lint roller gets a little off, but not much, and vacuuming does almost nothing…. Anyone have any other suggestions?

A damp, not wet, sponge might work. Rub in one direction and the hair should roll up and you can pick it off. I have also had very good luck with the new Pledge Pet Hair remover.

Q&A: Any suggestions? My shih tzu has allergies?

Question by ajt575s: Any suggestions? My shih tzu has allergies?
I have tried everything I can think of. The vet gives her allergy shots and they work, but says she can only have so many a year, and she’s used them up. The medicine he prescribed doesn’t work. Baby benadryl and sudafed don’t work. The vet prescribed a special shampoo, and that’s not working. I’ve also tried various itch sprays and creams, and they don’t work at all. We put some olive oil in her bath and that seemed to help for a while, but now that doesn’t help, either. She scratches herself constantly all day long, leaving raw or bloody patches on her skin. Do you have any suggestions that I haven’t tried?

Also–she’s on a special prescription dog food because she has kidney disease also, so I can’t change her diet very much.
