Question by Jax: Need Dietary Supplement & Advise?
I Rescued a Red Nose a few years ago, and he’s the best dog I have ever had, he’s eight yrs old, and was in rough shape when I got him. But he has now developed very dependent behaviors when I leave even if he has people around. He is chewing on himself and causing a mess bleeding and hurting himself. I have been to the vet ever other day for three weeks and have gotten no where. I believe he’s itchy or nervous, maybe allergy, but I feed him same food, pedigree, fish oil makes him vomit, won’t eat raw foods only dog food, not even a hot dog. He gets hot spots but selectively lets them bother him. He can’t always go with me I have to work and he’s a little protective as he was a “rescue dog”. He busts cones off himself like it’s a game, the big rubber thing doesn’t prevent anything, the vet and I are out of ideas.
I would like to change food, on the off chance that is it. What dog food can I give him that does not contain wheat, corn, etc.? Or dietary supplement?
Any suggestions on the behavioral problems? Other than the good suggestions about changing the routine a little? He is already trained for a crate and loves it as he had never been inside before I got him. Thanks.

Question by mammafish: What sort of vit supplement should I get when I start a raw diet for a 6 month old German Shepherd?
My German Shepherd pup is eating herself to death. We have had several vet checks. She has been on Prednazone (sp) for the last two months. It hasn’t been working and she has been eating herself to death. I took her back to the vet today and found out that she has a staph infection due to her digging and chewing and they gave her a steriod injection. He said it should work instantly unless it is a food allergy. So far it hasn’t helped. We discussed changing foods within a weeks time if she is still chewing. He suggested Science Diet ZZ or ZD (?). She is on Lamb and rice right now, Chicken made her chew herself more so I am almost positive it is food related. I am reading up on raw diet and wondering where on earth do I find the vit to put in her food?? We don’t really have a pet store anywhere near here. Or should I try to change her to the Eukanuba venison? I’m trying to save money and keep my dog healthy, thats why I ask that. The SD food is HIGH!

I have fed raw diet for years with great results and NO supplements. It’s true that many dogs are allergic to raw chicken, one of mine is, but the other two thrive on Raw Diet and never are sick…never see a vet except for booster shots.

Question by Dear Prudence: What is a good fish oil supplement for dog with allergies?
Many folks and vets recommending my dog get omega 3 for his allergies. But, he will not eat the food if I put oil on it and he is very small and can’t swallow the enormous fish oil pills. What is an alternative that may work for him? I need a VERY small pill that I could put in a pice of cheese or a good tasting powder or food additive.
THANKS!
Thanks!!

There are chewy treats called synovi G3 soft chews available from your vet.
BUT, with allergies, it’s very, very important to research the right foods for your dog. Many times, changing the food to a high quality one makes the difference. Flint River Ranch makes wonderful products!

Question by hera: Home made Dog Food supplement vitamin question…my dog is allergic to Yeast, and all the dog Vits have this?
Ok, first off I hate the fact that when you ask a question you can never get all of the information in the question like you need it to be…the area is not long enough…anyway
I have a dog who has a yeast allergy and I am wanting to feed him home-made dog food. Everything that I have read says that you should supplement with a good dog vitamin…but all the vitamins that I have seen have YEAST in them, which means that vitamins are out…how can I make sure that he gets what he needs if I don’t use the vitamins? Oh, he has an allergy to Yeast, chicken, duck and peanuts.
If you are pro-pet food industry people, please don’t bother answering, because everything that I have read about how they process the food to the fact that there are dead euthanized pets(Yes, cats and dogs) in the food and to top it off that it is not safe (the pet food recall) has TOTALLY put me off of this cr*p.
