Q&A: Allergy sufferers, allergists, etc. can I use Zyrtec or anything and have a job taking care of animals?

I used to have an outside dog when I was a kid. I got a soar throat and a runny nose one and a half years after. We had to give it to the Humane Society.

I have seasonal allergies. They make me sneeze and sneeze unless I take my Claritin RediTabs. Back in 1993 I took an allergy test and was allergic to all grasses, the tree of heaven, lambs quarter, alfalfa, feathers, house dust, and dogs.

We used to have two rabbits we kept outside and less than a year later my skin would itch and bleed.

Will Zyrtec or anything work for me and make it possible for me to have a job taking care of animals? If so will I have any symptoms, even minor ones? If you answer let me know what you have used and for how long, are an allergist, physician or whatever.

I am an LPN, and also an allergy sufferer. Allergic to all trees, all grasses, all weeds, dust mites, mold, cats, and feathers. Zyrtec works very well for me. Although my kitty has passed, it helped me tolerate her presence, as long as I didn’t rub my eyes after petting her. As for environmental allergies, there are time when the non-drowsy type antihistamines just aren’t strong enough. You can use benadryl along with the Claritin or Zyrtec, but preferably only at night since it will increase any sedation side effects.

i think you’ve pretty much got everything covered do your dogs have any special toys that they like or blankets??? you might consider bringing them. you might consider packing more jeans and shorts though in case there are no laundry facilities around. OH 2 things to add BUG SPRAY AND SUNSCREEN!!!! and flip flops and sneakers

So, I’ve got this puppy who isn’t exactly a puppy. He turned 7 last Christmas and I’m wondering about the whole “senior dog” thing. The only older dog I’ve ever had lived to be 20+ (she was 17-18 when we inherited her from a family member who moved and couldn’t keep her), so I’m kinda clueless.

First of all, he doesn’t act aging at all and I know he’s not really -that- ancient. He still acts like a puppy, but I’m wondering if there’s any sort of supplement or anything that would come in handy. He’s a GSD/Sibe mix and his sire was a purebred GSD, so hip displasia comes to mind. Are there any joint supplements that you can recommend? Home remedies would be even better =3 I’m hoping to give him the most longevity that I can.

And now for food. I used to feed him Canidae Grain Free Salmon Meal (he also has allergies too and, well, Canidae’s supposedly better for him), but after a six-month layoff, I had to buy him a bag of crappy food. Terrible, I know ;-; But I’ve read up on Canidae’s new formula and I’m not sure that I like it. I’ve read around and I’m trying to find the top best foods, in your opinions. I live in a pretty rural area and its really hard to find decent brands, even at petstores, but I’ll still try.

Can I get a list of the best ones, in order that you think they’re the best and why? The dog food analysis is handy, but I like multiple opinions.
The other dog was a mix of chow and some other random breeds. I don’t know how she lived that long, honestly o.o

Also, the only reason that I’m asking from the viewpoint of a senior dog is based on other opinions I’ve gotten. Sorry if I’m off some?

And thirdly, I have been to the vet and all. He suggested Purina One and offered to sell me some from the lobby, then asked what I was feeding him. When I said Canidae, he blinked a bit and said nevermind about the Purina. I’m still poking around for a different vet.

what breed lives to be over 20 years? your story is conflicting in many areas. a 7 year old dog is not a senior or old for that matter.

i would go to the vet and get a specialized meal from the vet’s recommendations. then stick with it.

ok, I brought my dog to the vet for seizures. The vet prescribed him phenobarbitol. (Hope it works soon) forgot to ask her can he still continue taking the benedryl as needed for itching from allergies. Does anyone know? Is anyone’s dog on phenobarbitol and/or benedryl. I dont want to continue to give it to him for the skin allergies (its only as needed , not an everyday medicine) with the side effects of phenobarbitol. Phenobarb causes lethargy in dogs. My dog is on it (phenobarb) twice a day. Was only taking benedryl as needed. Now I dont know what to do…

My dog was just started on phenobarb on Wednesday evening. How long will the excessive thirst and frequent urination last…OMG it’s driving me nuts

My little dog Tiara is in a lot of agony. She is allergic to flea saliva. I’ve taken her to the vet recently to get an allergy shot which usually helps. However, this time it didn’t. The vet says she should have a shot about every 3 months. Well, she had one like a month ago. I don’t know what to do. I don’t have any money to get any flea shampoo. (I wouldn’t want to use those harsh chemicals on her anyway.) Is there ANYTHING around the house I can use to get rid of the fleas? Thank you for your answers.
Here’s the thing. Tiara doesn’t go outside. She’s only 8 lbs, and I chase her around the house for exercise. I’d like to take her for walks, but I don’t live in a safe area and I can’t imagine the problem she would have with fleas if I took her outside.

flea shampoo is not harmful to your dog. i use it on my dog and he is fine. you can also use flea spray, it works wonders. she will be uncomfortable for about 10 minutes, but after that, all gone! also spray the carpets (thats where they come from)
