My dog has fleas and i need alternative treatments?

Question by T_RawRr: My dog has fleas and i need alternative treatments?
my dog has fleas and to got a spot on thing for him because the vet recommended it for him many years ago.(Advantage by bayer)

im sure ive put it on him right because its worked every other time

i only treat him when he actually gets fleas because its expensive (and my mum refuses to pay that much)

its been around 2 weeks since i put it on and it hasnt had much effect unlike the other times. i dont want to give him a flea bath because he usually bites his skin to its broken when its itchy (from allergies and stuff) so i dont want to put any cleaning stuff on broken skin

+ he is already wearing a tick collar for paralysis ticks and not fleas (other collars dont usually protect him from those type ticks or only last for 2 weeks) so id rather not use anymore pesticide treatment (ticks are common in my area and id rather not pay another $ 1300 vet bill if he gets tick poisoning)

any suggestions?
the spot on is meant to kill fleas around him as well

he has only been infesting 3-4 times in his 8 year life

Question by Youre worthless so eat a bullet: What are some alternative treatments for doggy ocd?
I already asked this but people aren’t listening. My dog has OCD, I know she has OCD, I know it is NOT A FOOD ALLERGY NOR AN ENVIRONMENTAL ALLERGY. I have a 4 year old American Red Nose, she was previously abused before she was given to me and it took me a long time to get her issues in check. The one issue that she has problems with is her OCD licking and chewing on her front pads, mostly the right, and licking at her crotch area. My dog is already on a special diet for her skin and coat because she is a pit and they have dry skin recommended by her vet, so it is not her food. She is a very healthy in door dog, I have a large fenced in back yard which is hers and sprayed with an animal safe bug spray just for her, we go on walks, and she gets to play at the doggy park across the street from my house. I know my dog has OCD I am not looking for what other alternative issues she could have, I am only asking if anyone knows any alternative treatments for this condition besides medications which can change her temperament. She is completely and excellently trained using sound mixed with my native american language, I trained her personally. She is the best dog that I have ever owned it’s just for some reason she cant get past this OCD. Please if anyone has had to deal with doggy OCD could you please share how you got your dog to stop the behavior. Thank you :D

Spray her in the face with a squirt bottle or get her lots of toys that she can chew or lick (put peanut butter on them) or just stimulate her brain by walking her A LOT :D

Question by New Mexico08: What treatments have worked for Boxer Dog (skin) Allergies?
My boxer dog started getting hemangiomas and histiocytomas (growths on the skin due to allergies) when he was three. His skin condition has gotten worse since then -he’s now nearly 5. I feed him a no-grain food (Orijin), give him extra fish oil each day, and bathe him once a week with Oatmeal shampoo. (all recommendations from my vet). He stopped itching when he was given prednisone and Tameril P -but after a while on steroids, my laid back pooch started getting more easily agitated (aggressive) around other dogs -so we took him off of that. Now he’s developed folliculitis on top of everything else. I just want to find relief for my dog. Does anyone have experience in this area or have some advice? Thanks!

Atopica is another treatment the vet can prescribe for your situation, but the prednisone and temeril p is the first treatment because because of price and depending on the weight, Atopica is about $ 200 per month in the beginning and dosages less often in the following weeks, plus the prednisone and temeril p shouldn’t be given for extended period of times anyway because it leads to Addison’s Disease

Tritop should help with the folliculitis, about $ 20.00 per tube, but you may also want to ask him about a different shampoo, if you are able to do weekly baths, you might consider:

or

something that can address the issue at the skin level also.

Question by Susan S: Holistic treatments for dog with Staph allergy wanted.?
My 6 year old French Bulldog Leo has a Staph allergy (i.e. an allergy to Staph bacteria that normally covers dogs and people and is usually harmless unless injury or weakened immune system is involved)that has resulted in a horrendous skin condition: loss of hair over large amounts of his body, crusty skin, shedding skin cells by the piles. He is on steroids to control itching (which I hate and only provides little relief anyway). The only treatment that my vet suggests (and the only treatment my research has turned up) is allergy shots by a vet specializing in dermatology — the nearest of whom is over 60 miles away. Anyone know of holistic treatments for this condition or at least treatments that may ease his suffering?

Have you used Aveeno oatmeal bath treatments for a dog?

Question by Bordeaux: Have you used Aveeno oatmeal bath treatments for a dog?
My dog has severe allergies – most likely to food. He’s been on a downward spiral for the past month and he is now on prescription ultra-low allergen food (z/d), Temaril-P, and Douxo calm shampoo and spray. It’s been a rough ride so far, but we now have to ride out a food trial for 3 months without expecting any improvement in the next month or so…

Anyway, as I was driving home from the vet’s today I remember that when I had a serious reaction to penicillin a couple of years back, the only thing that kept me from scratching my skin raw were aveeno oatmeal baths. This dog’s skin is so irritated, so red and lumpy and he cringes at our touch. He’s so miserable that he lies on the floor and shakes like he’s freezing cold – something the vet attributes to the severe generalized itching and discomfort. Can I use Aveeno baths on a dog? I think the effect would be faster than the Douxo spray and it is not toxic in any way.

Any advice?

P.S.: I know all about holistic premium food and I hate Hill’s as much as anyone else, so please don’t tell me that this is all a food change away from a cure, ok? Been there, done that. At some point, when your dog is giving up and losing all its hair, you kind of have to trust your vet.

Answer by Proud owner of 6 cats and 2 dogs
No you don’t have to trust your vet unless he has a second degree in pet nutrition. Has your vet run an allergy test to see exactly what foods your dog is allergic too? They do exist and are a hell of a lot better than guessing. Never use human products on a dog. Try some Oxy Med Medicated Rinse until you can get the allergy test run. It helps with itching and will soothe the skin.

What do you think? Answer below!
