Question by Lou-Lou?: what shampoo would you recommend to use on a white sentive skinned stafford shire bull terrier?
i have a white staffordshire bull terrier, after a bath she goes an off-white colour after about 5-8 days! so i was wondering about this shampoo:
http://www.petsathome.com/find/category-is-2+dog/category-is-2g+grooming/category-is-2G04+Shampoos+and+sprays/product-is-20931#product-detail
but should i stay away from that because she gets skin allergies in the summer or should i use the ‘whitening’ one in the winter and this one in the summer:
http://www.petsathome.com/find/category-is-2+dog/category-is-2g+grooming/category-is-2G04+Shampoos+and+sprays/product-is-20936#customerreviews
because at the minute she has ‘hives’ which are lumps on on the skin, also a while back she got bald patches they went but her fur has thinned out and skin has became dry and a bit flakey which is unusual for her skin allergies.

would you go with health or looks, i would go wih health but what would YOU recommend
thanks
the vet recommended us to look around because she has been having allot of shampoo’s from the vet she has had 6 differen ones all costing around £20-£35 and also £20 to be seen and this is happening every month so we are wasting around £50 a month and money isn’t flying around our household

The whitening shampoos work well, but can be drying to the skin. I would not use it on a dog with these issues. Your best bet would be a prescription shampoo from your vet that is designed to help with these issues. Most shampoos are just going to add to the skin irritation she already has.

Question by Lisa B: My 3 year old white shi tzu has issues with her skin around her eyes, nose and lips?
The area is bright pink red and she is scratching the whole area constantly. My vet tells me that she needs to see a dog dermatologist. She had problems before with itching just like many dogs bud this is whole different problem now, I think. He doesn’t want to give her any more medications with steroids in it. I have her on special liquid med. (steroid free) and nothing is helping. I use only the best shampoos and best diet food for dogs with allergies. Anyone with the same problem?

Dog skin allergies, are common but at the same time not easy to pinpoint. Patience and a keen sense of detail is needed in diagnosing and determining the likely culprit that causes the allergies.
Symptoms include sneezing, wheezing, and coughing. Their nose and their eyes may also have runny looking discharge. If their digestive system is affected, it may result in watery stools, diarrhea, or vomiting.
The most common type of trigger for allergies are:
1. Fleas
Flea’s saliva can cause an allergic reaction in your dogs. Owner should do their best to keep fleas away with control measures and if unfortunately your dog gets infected, to clear away the fleas as quickly as possible to keep the possibility of flea allergic reaction to a minimal.
2. Food
Dogs get allergies from food too. Some food that are known to cause allergic reactions are: wheat, soy products, pork, beef, whey, fish, eggs, milk, corn, artificial sweeteners, and chemical preservatives that could be found in their food.
Common signs of allergic reactions to food are: head shaking, scratching the ears, irritated skin, biting and licking the paws, ear inflammation, sneezing, vomiting, and diarrhea.
3. Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a skins allergic reaction caused by sensitivity of the dog’s immune system to substances that can be found in the environment like molds or dust mites.
Symptoms include: excessively licking and chewing its paws and licking the stomach.
You will also see red-brownish staining at the armpits, between the toes of the paws, and in the groin. This is especially obvious in light colored dogs.
4. Bacteria
Some dogs are allergic to common bacterias found in a dog’s skin.
Some symptom to watch for are: hair loss with the ringworm marks on the dog’s skin. The infected areas should be treated with a mild medicated shampoo and appropriate treatment creams are to be applied.
As you can see, allergies are common and each dog’s response to allergic triggers can be different. Therefore, it is quite difficult to diagnose and offer effective treatment, but it is helpful to know as much as you can so you can make an informed choice on the next course of action to take for dog skin allergies.

Question by Phoenix: My Husky eyes are red in the white part of the eye ball anyone have a opinion?
My 5 month old husky eyes are red in the white part of the eyeball. We took her to the vet and he said it is probably just allergies. My question is could it be her dog food that she is on? she is taking purina puppy chow, and one more thing she has been haveing a loose stoole that has a strange color to it. it is like a orangeish red color. It is not blood but could it be the dyes that are in the puppy chow?

lots of dog food have ingredients that make pets allergic. Maybe your dog is very tired. Keep track of what her stool looks like for the vet next time.

White Boxer Pup skin allergies!!?

Question by Taonui T: White Boxer Pup skin allergies!!?
I have a white boxer who in the last week has contracted a rash on her belly area, then on her back and face there’s a harder rash which is inflamed and scabby, we’ve taken her to the vet and he thinks she’s allergic to dairy which could explain the belly rash and the harsh rash may be mange, but recently we’ve changed her to a raw meat diet and its just been getting worse…is it possible for a dog to be allergic to raw meats?

Best answer:

Answer by Tim H
Dogs can be allergic to anything. My dog is allergic to corn, wheat, chicken, and/or beef. He can only eat a limited ingredient lamb and rice diet. I would try another protein source. It should be easy to do since you are making the food yourself. Chicken is a common allergen so I would try replacing that with something else like lamb. Corn and wheat are also pretty common so you might want to avoid those ingredients as well. Make sure to try the new diet for at least a month to see if you notice an improvement.
