Q&A: Adopting a dog with….?

Question by Betty: Adopting a dog with….?
food allergies….

We went to the local animal shelter last night and I fell in love with a shar pei yellow lab cross.

She has terrible allergies which we were told are caused by food. Her skin is red all over and she has little sores on her belly with some spots where hair is falling out.

Does anyone have experience with this and if we adopt her, what course of action should we take (she will have a vet check before we bring her home).

A correct food choice can help, but Shar-Peis (and Shar-Pei mixes) are often plagued by skin issues. Your vet can help you with medications and certain shampoos to manage it. Good luck!

What Could Be Wrong With My Dog’s Fur?

i have a one and a half year old golden retriever, and these past 4 or 5 months, his fur along his hind legs and upper arms looks unhealthy and stringy. he always bites those places. he takes flea/tick treatment, so it can’t be that he has bugs. and i brush his fur pretty regularly and switched his food in case he has an allergy, yet his fur stays the same and he still bites those places. can’t be the weather cuz he does this any season. what could it be?

Need Help With Hair Loss In My Dog?

my dog has been suffering form hair loss since last spring. It started on her belly and arms and keeps spreading up her chest and around her arms and legs. It is very symmetrical from side to side. She also has little skin tags wherever she loses her hair. I have had her to the vet and a dermatologist and they found nothing. We did find one flea on her but if she had a allergy to them that would be over by now wouldn’t it. The vet seems to think it is just the breed or bad genes but I don’t want it to get worse. I was noticing that the area she goes to the bathroom outside is very wet in the spring and does not drain the best. Could she be stepping in too much pee from the winter as the snow melts. Also, awhile ago not sure when though when I was putting water softener salt in the water softener I dropped a few pellets and before I could pick them up she was over there. I don’t know if she ate one but if she did could she have ingested too much sodium and had a reaction to that. We have tried different foods to see if it helps and are giving her a vitamin A supplement via dermatologist. Anyone have any ideas what else it could be. She is such a cutie I don’t want her to go bold. Open to any ideas. Thanks for looking.

I found three dogs on the side of the road yesterday. Two seem perfectly healthy. The third seems to be an adult, as he doesn’t have pointy puppy teeth. The skin on his back and down his tail is red, itchy and swollen. He’s also “balding” in this area. It’s not patchy, as he’s still got a little hair all over this area, it’s just thinning pretty badly.
The hair and skin on his face, paws and legs seems to be fine, which leads me to believe it’s not mange/scabies. Also, while he does have some fleas, he doesn’t seem to have a large number of bite marks. The redness is even and his skin is smooth and not flaky. It is, however, dry.
I don’t know how long he’s been outside. Could he be itching because of stress/allergies/sunburn? Do you think it’s anything contagious? I have the 3 of them quarantined from the rest of my dogs. Do you think it’s necessary?
I know seeing a vet would be the best option, but I really can’t afford it unless it’s absolutely necessary…

What’s Wrong With My Yorkie?

I have a 1 1/2 year old yorkie and she has been scratching herself A LOT lately, much much more that usual. I thought she just needed her flea medication again so I gave it to her about a week ago and she is still constantly scratching and gnawing at her paws. I just noticed a couple days ago that on her legs and paws she has spots where she has literally chewed all of her fur off! I’m really scared for her. I have this no-chew spray that I tried using on her but it didn’t help. I have heard that when dogs excessively lick and gnaw at their paws it normally means they have allergies, do you think that’s what’s wrong? If so do I need to take her to the vet for a medication or could I just find something at the pet store? Please anyone give me your thoughts.
