Question by New Mexico08: What treatments have worked for Boxer Dog (skin) Allergies?
My boxer dog started getting hemangiomas and histiocytomas (growths on the skin due to allergies) when he was three. His skin condition has gotten worse since then -he’s now nearly 5. I feed him a no-grain food (Orijin), give him extra fish oil each day, and bathe him once a week with Oatmeal shampoo. (all recommendations from my vet). He stopped itching when he was given prednisone and Tameril P -but after a while on steroids, my laid back pooch started getting more easily agitated (aggressive) around other dogs -so we took him off of that. Now he’s developed folliculitis on top of everything else. I just want to find relief for my dog. Does anyone have experience in this area or have some advice? Thanks!

Atopica is another treatment the vet can prescribe for your situation, but the prednisone and temeril p is the first treatment because because of price and depending on the weight, Atopica is about $ 200 per month in the beginning and dosages less often in the following weeks, plus the prednisone and temeril p shouldn’t be given for extended period of times anyway because it leads to Addison’s Disease

Tritop should help with the folliculitis, about $ 20.00 per tube, but you may also want to ask him about a different shampoo, if you are able to do weekly baths, you might consider:

or

something that can address the issue at the skin level also.

I live in Tampa, which is according to my awesome vet, is the flea capital of the world. We have had a huge flea problem which is under control now. The fleas are out of my house and all the animals are on Revolution (cats) and Frontline (dogs). They still get a few fleas on them of course and they get bit before the chemicals kill them…..

So, one of my cats, male 11 yr old, has developed an allergy. He has hair loss on tummy and back legs and scabs all around his neck. My vet just told me to switch from Advantage to Revolution because he believes it works better in kitties. It has only been 2 weeks, so I’m still waiting for results… Meanwhile, I’m waiting for the fur to grow back and the scabs to heal. Although I think he’s still itching…. poor baby.

I wanted to know what has worked for you if you’ve had this problem! Did you have to resort to an additional treatment?

Thanks
Chrissy

Julia: This doesn’t seem logical to me. I have a master’s degree in Cell, Molecular, and Microbiology and I am a trained Medical Technologist. Parasites? In the blood? This is highly, highly, highly doubtful…. Which parasite did your vet say? I’m very curious to know more.

My dog was treated for fleas two weeks ago at the vet. For the past 3-4 days she has been scratching profusely and has caused some sores. She was not scratching like this before the treatment. On Sat I noticed she had a sore on her tail that was bleeding a little and she kept gnawing at it and biting it. I called an emergency vet line and they told me to give her benedryl and neosporin. None of it worked. Does anyone know how much an allergy shot would be on average at a vet?
