Question by bubalu: Would I be wrong to assume that my dog is allergic to the newly grown cornstalk in the backyard?
Ever since a few weeks ago my dog started itching until he broke skin and he also developed small bumps along his lips. we took him to the vet (he said allergies) and we were given cortisone pills which got rid of the symptoms within a few days. now the symptoms are starting to appear again and I want to know if the allergy is possibly due to a corn stalk growing in the backyard.

Question by Roxy: My 2yr. old basset hound refuses to eat almost everything we put in front of her, what is wrong with my dog?
This poor dog had her food changed on her 7 times since May. She had terrible allergies that finally subsided after we found a good holistic dog food(and one that she actually liked). We made the mistake of not changing the food gradually, but she hadn’t had any stomache achs or diarreah…she seemed fine until last week when she refused to eat ANY dog food at all. We gave her treats and some table scraps, just so that she’d have food in her,and she ate that no problem. Well she no sooner stoped eating the scraps,so I grilled some white meat chicken, and mixed it with rice…she ate that for 1 day, and is now refusing to eat that at all.She will (hardly)eat one thing one day and not the next. She is getting very skinny, and extremely lethargic day by day,now even her gums are pale. She is going in to the vet very soon, but in the meantime what can I do for her, and does anybody know what this is? Is she sick, or did we just completely mess her up with all the food changes recently?

It sounds like all of the food changes may have her terribly confused. It is good that you are taking her to the vet soon (hopefully VERY soon), but in the mean time try feeding her a high quality canned dog food. Canned food comes in several different flavors, so maybe you could give her a different flavor each day.

What is wrong with my chihuahua’s skin/coat?

Question by Diana: What is wrong with my chihuahua’s skin/coat?
I have been having serious issues regarding my 6 month old chi’s skin/coat. I’ve taken her to the vet several times and they are not helping one bit, only clearing out my wallet. My dog has hair loss in patches, extremely dry skin, tiny round scabs on the top of her head, and extreme tear-stains. She never had this up until about 1 1/2 months ago. The vet tested for any parasites/mange, and there was none. He said it could be food allergies, so I switched to an allergen food, and nothing has helped. Her tear stains are getting really bad, even though I clean them all the time. She never had this up until recently. It seems my cat also is getting little bald patches on her fur… what is wrong with my pets?

Question by christy_7148: Please help, I think my vet might be wrong, what’s wrong with my Golden Retriever? Please read.?
Vet says its allergies. She scratches herself and then it turns into a staph infection on her skin. Sometimes it seems that she gets little skin infections without even over-scratching. She doesnt have fleas.

Last night we took her to the vet because the entire left side of her face from under her ear down to her chin was wet, and through her fur I could see that the skin was just raw. Bright pink/red and draining. The doc said something about a “hot spot” and that its still allergies, and gave her antibiotics. It was so bad that they had to shave the fur and now she just sits with her head tilted because it hurts for even her ear to touch it. She also had some eye drainage, wont play or eat a lot.

Theres another dog in the house (my sister’s dog), and they play-fight very rough. Its a yellow lab puppy (almost the size of my golden) thats out of control, and they bite and scratch. The vet said no, but is it possible that she got this from playing so rough?
She never did any testing… she just looks at it and says “yeah thats what it looks like”. Im not saying that shes definitely wrong, but I just want some reassurance before I get her in for a 2nd opinion.

im not sure. maybe you should take her to a better vet/ search the local vet clinics. you might have to travel a little ways but it would be worth it to get your dog the proper medical attention. this sounds nothing like allergies to me…

Can you tell me what’s wrong with my dog, please?

Question by Gayle: Can you tell me what’s wrong with my dog, please?
Hi, my dog is having some symptoms, which are: excessive thirst, hunger and urination. Her stools are loose, too. She seems more tired than usual. My mom took her to her usual vet place because I had to work but a different vet saw my dog. The vet does complete blood work on her, which showed everything was normal. The vet tells my mom that it’s probably caused by a fairly recent steroid shot she got. She gets these shots about every 3 or 4 months because she’s allergic to flea bites and they work wonders. The shot she got before that one was a year ago so the vet tells my mom that her symptoms are caused because there was a longer time span between shots so it’s like she’s having a first time reaction to the steroid. But she’s never had a reaction of any kind to any steroid shot she’s received for the last five years! By the way, my dog is 7 years old. She’s been having this hunger, urination etc… for the last two weeks but didn’t develop it until two months after her allergy shot! Could this be the case? She once had a liver infection and her symptoms were exactly like this. I’m just stumped because her blood work was normal. The vet told my mom that my dog’s symptoms should go away in a few days. Could someone tell me whether the vet is probably right or not? Can a dog ever have a liver infection or another infection yet the blood work shows normal? Do you think her symptoms could be caused by the allergy (steroid) shot? Please help, thank you!

I’d give it a few days to see if her symptoms change or if they get worse. Your vet is most likely right. Just keep a close eye on her and see what happens. If she doesn’t get better or if she gets worse, I’d bring her back to the vet, but make sure she sees her regular doctor, the one who normally gives the steroid shot.
