Predisone side effects for 13 year old dog?

Question by rothchild: Predisone side effects for 13 year old dog?
Hello everyone,

My parents’ 13 year old dog has been taking prednisone for her allergies. She has gone to the vet for itchy skin and flaking scalp and nothing has ever worked so they gave her two medications, prednisone and another med (will get back to you on that one). I was not around for six weeks and when I went to see her recently, I was so sick at her state of mind. She looked terrible and carried excess weight (she was always a slim dog). The last time I saw her, she was still a happy and playful dog but not last night. It broke my heart to see her so lethargic and cranky. It was a completely different dog. I am aware that she is an old dog and attribute some of her behaviors to age but this was an extreme change in such a short time. She lives with my parents now but she is still my first dog love and I can’t bear to see her like this. Is this a common side effect of prednisone? Are there other alternatives for severe allergies?

In humans, prednisone causese weight gain…it is a steriod.
It can cause mood swings, as well as a long list of other side effects.

I have a 10 year old Siberian Husky and I started feeding her the Advanced Protection Science Diet food for Seniors. Within 2 weeks she became NOTICEABLY peppy and is much happier!! I still made ’steps’ for her to get on the bed (she’ spoiled – but just can’t make the jump anymore). I really believe that Science Diet dog food may have prolonged her life (and made her happy too)!!

two year old out of control?

Question by mama of 1: two year old out of control?
okay i need some serious help!! my son is almost two, in less than a week and he is out of control. i would say its been like this since he was born i will kinda give you a really fast update. The night after he was born screamed bloody murder the nurses couldn’t even get him to calm down (i tried breast feeding didn’t produce enough milk though) i didn’t think any thing of it. he was always a crabby baby had to be bounced/rocked to sleep, always spit up, cried for hours he also has had eczema all his life he was put on soy formula which made him projectile vomit so we looked to nutramigen (sp?)and ended up with alimentum (sp?). when he turned one doc told us to try whole milk spit up but for some reason organic milk didn’t make him spit up which the doc and i though was kinda weird. He had a blood test done for food allergy not sure what all was on it but it was milk eggs nuts that kind of stuff all came back negative had another allergy test done the one that’s under the skin for dog and cat.. allergic to both so we said bye bye to the doggies because we did what we thought was best for our son. so any way here we are almost two and he is always on edge so crabby when he wakes up from naps if his toy truck and trailer fall apart its a melt down if the blocks dont go together the way he wants them to its a melt down we have been working on “you need to ask for help” then we will practice saying “help” but he never wants to ask just throw a fit. he is soo attached to me i cant get anything done around the house. he always wants to play outside and right now we have been in the 90’s 100’s and the humidity is bad, if i tell him no its a fit and i mean a BIG fit 30 mins plus when we do go outside he has a mower he loves to push around and he always wants me to walk right next to him sometimes he wants me to hold his hand while he pushes i know this sounds horrible that something like that buggs me but he needs to start being more independent i do it for a bit then i say okay now mommy is going to take a break your doing a great job mommy will watch you mow the rest and he will for maybe a min then be back right next to me pulling on my hand. he has a battery operated truck and if he gets stuck he throws a fit. our doc has even seen one of his fits and even said shes never seen a kid throw a fit that long before my mother has even said its bad. he also wont play by himself i cant get on the computer, cook, clean with out wedging himself between me and the computer desk the counter or anything. i guess im just lost a what to do i know i need to be stern and not give in but sometimes i just want to make him happy i feel hes never happy unless im right there with him. i ran into a forum about a book “is this your child” by Doris Rapp and read a summery and iv always though maybe hes like this because of an allergy but we did test could it have been wrong? i know some of you will say oh hes being two but i just wish i could put a video up of our day you have no idea the majority of our day is having temper tantrums he also will slam his head into the ground, throw, bite, pinch, hit and he does “time outs” he does good with them too, he always says sorry after. i just need to know if any other mothers/father have had this problem and it end up being allergies!! thanks so much! sorry so long!
Thank you both so much I can’t find where I can pick best answer. Every Tuesday he goes with his grandma my MIL to a music play group so I can get stuff done around the house but that’s about it besides playing with friends that come over which doesn’t happen all that much. We have his two year check up Monday so I will deff talk more about allergies we just switched pediatricians and he has been on off brand of zertec for quite awhile now when we first put him on allergy meds we did Claritin and he was a 100 times worse on it I looked up side effects and I read and can have that effect in some people! I will try all the advice thanks so much!

Little by little let him wait for your attention, just a brief wait then extend the time he has to wait, but gradually. Does he go to any play groups? If you stay there while he plays, you will be able to have a rest while he learns to play with other children. The interest in the toys might make him leave your side . Good luck

Q&A: My one year old dog was put down?

Question by personwithalottaprobs.: My one year old dog was put down?
A year and half ago I got a gorgeous wolf hybrid puppy. He was a brat, but a bundle of joy to be with. I immediately fell inlove with him. I named him Timber. When he was six months old, he got a rash on his chest. We assumed it was allergies, and continued on. Nine months later, he got that rash back badly. He scratched furiously for a month, and again we thought it was allergies. A month after that, he began to lose hair on his chest, ears, tail, and legs. His bare skin was BEET red sometimes, even if he wasnt scratching it. And other times it was normal. Three days ago, I got the flu badly and spent two full days with him. He was very depressed, unlike his usually VERY crazy self. I nurtured him. On the second day of me being sick, he began to bleed on his chest on little bumps on his skin. We organized a vets appointment for the morning. When I came backfrom school that day, my parents told me he had o be put down. Thevet told my parents Timber suffered from a problem in his blood and immune system, and his immune system thought it was allergic to his skin. The vet said it was excruitiatingly painful for my baby, and there was no cure, just medication to treat the symptoms, but it would worsen very quickly. He said since the dog was so young and already had it so bad, the best thing for the dog was for him to be put down (we’ve had this vet for years with other dogs). This animal was my bestfriend, my baby, and my life. and he wasnt even two years old. It’s only been a day without him in my life, and I miss my little angel so much I had to go home from cryinf so much at school. He was my 110 pound BABY, and I loved him more than anything. I walked him three times a day, slept with him on my bed, ate dinner with him, sat on the curb inthe rain with him. I just want him back. I need advice, comfort, anything. I just miss my sunshine. He was everything to me.

Question by Becca: Help my 8 year old Pomeranian dog keeps peeing in the house!?
I just recently adopted a rescue dog from the pound about 3 months ago now. He is a real sweetheart and was already create trained and house trained. The previous owner was in a nursing home and died, which is the only reason the family gave him up.
With that said, when I got him everything was fine. He is fixed as well. Recently I keep having to take him to the vet. He started going in the house when he was on pain medicine for his ankle which he sprained from jumping (hes a pom…they do that). Then I found out that he was allergic to chicken/fish/corn. So now he is on a special diet. When I first switched him he would poop and pee in the apt. Now that the food allergies is taken care of he stopped and everything was fine.
However recently he started going again (just peeing). I don’t understand. I take him out about every 3-5 hours depending on my schedule and working full time I can’t during the day so he is in his crate. He is fine there, and I take him out as soon as I get home, but after that he keeps going randomly in the apt.
He is very scheduled when he can go. I let him out as soon as I wake up 6am, before I leave for work…around 730 as soon as I get back from work, 6ish, then at 9/10 and then before I go to sleep around 12. Lately he is barking in the middle of the night around 3 AM and wants out because I crate him at night. I have to crate him at night because if I don’t he pees and poops in the apt.
He was fine at first and now I don’t understand. I just would hate to have to take him to the vet again when he has been there 2 times in the last month!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just feel bad when I yell at him saying “Bad Dog” because he starts shaking, runs into his crate and won’t come out… :-/

Since he is an older dog, there is a good chance he may be developing bladder problems. Take him to the vet for a check-up.
