One of my dog’s ears has redness, slight discharge, and a bunch of dry and flaky skin on the inside (there’s no overwhelming smell; just an unpleasant dog ear smell). She was scratching it a lot earlier in the day, so I helped alleviate the itchiness by peeling off the dead skin. She stopped scratching it luckily, but there’s still redness and a bit of discharge. I’ve looked up symptoms of ear mites, yeast infections, and allergies and it doesn’t appear to be any of those… She eats Blue Buffalo food and has no other dry patches of skin besides in her one ear, so I don’t think it’s allergies; there’s no evidence of blood so that rules out mites. Will it be okay in a couple days if I just use a dog ear-cleaning solution? Thanks for any help!

Yeah, I was going to say it sounds a lot like a fungal (sometimes the fungus is a yeast) or even a bacterial infection to me, but I’m not a vet. Try the ear cleaning for a couple days and if it doesn’t get better, take your dog to the vet. She might need a medicated ointment or solution for her ears.

well, she has been to the vet so no need for anyone to tell me to take her there. I now feed her purina pro plan for sensitive skin and stomach that’s salmon based. We think she is allergic to any land dwellers because we tried chicken based food, lamb based food, beef based food and duck based food. The stuff she’s on now works great. My question is: could we feed her cat food that is fish based? The reason I am asking is because the stuff she’s on now is a bit expensive for us right now. Obviously she will get what she’s on now regardless. I was just wondering if it would be ok to feed her the cat food.
Thank you guys soooo much for the advice so far. I just thought I would try something that’s good for her and me both but, I guess it wasn’t such a good idea. I’m glad I sought advice first.
What are some good grain free foods?

NO. Cat food is for CATS, not dogs.

Purina is junk, high priced junk at that.

* They make plenty of allergy foods for dogs. You want a single protein like: fish, duck, rabbit, venison.

Look for a food with NO GRAINS.

My female boxer has food and environmental allergies that are currently being treated, but as a result she has developed quite the yeast infection on many parts of her body. I am quite confident that the allergy treatment is working (treating the causes, not the symptoms) so that is not the question. Some of the research I have done on her yeast skin problems has indicated that vinegar is a good treatment and prevention for yeast on dogs. Is straight vinegar safe to spray on her skin or does it need to be diluted first? If so, to what proportions? Thanks for the info.

(I have asked this question before and got two very rude, ill-informed answers, so before you just tell me to take my dog to the vet, here is some more information:

My dog goes to the vet a minimum of once per month. She has had a serum test to determine the specific allergens that aggravate her and as a result she is on a limited ingredient diet and medication to handle some of the unavoidable environmental allergies. She takes an omega-3 supplement with her food. She is also given a prescription antiseptic bath at least once per week. Steroids are not an option as they bring about terrible side effects in her and are just plain not good for her anyway. Antibiotics are not getting rid of her itchy, smelly yeast infections (yes, skin scrapings have been tested and it is just yeast) so her vet recommended researching homeopathic remedies which I have been doing. My question above is for anyone who has had experience using one of these remedies or can recommend another one that they found to be effective. Thank you!)

that’s interesting

vinegar might sting inflamed skin and especially mucous membraney type skin.

try it watered down first, see how it goes … but generally, I hold and extremely dim view of simple household item remedies.

My moms dog has recurring yeast infections in his ears. She wants to know if their is anything she can try out since vet bills and the meds she has been giving him are a bit expensive, we want to know our alternatives. Her dogs ears stand straight, and he IS prone to allergy infections. I was thinking that the benadryll he take for his summer allergies would be god for him to take to help his ear. (If you know anything about dogs youll know why i am saying this). Also, how do i advise her NOT to use vagisil or monostate as an alternative. Certainly you cant use these right? Its not the same bacteria. Any one ever use the half vinegar/half water solution and have it work? He recently had a food allergy that we are still in his 3 month period of toxins leaving out his body, and hair is growing back, and he is gaining weight again. I believe his infections will stop once he has gotten all the food he had an allergy to is out of his system. As i said just giving mom some advice dont be rude to me for asking. -thanks-
TEP is for ear mites, and she doesnt have the ability to oder products off the internet. hint the home remedies thing.
not sure what he was eating, but now he is eating alpo and it has helped his hair and body get back to its natural state and plus some.
He has been getting meds from the vet, but shes tired of how expensive it is. Hoping its from his diet, it should be out of his system soon. But as if now he needs something because he seems to be itching a bit again.
I need reasons why (when i tell her) to not use monostat. She seems to think its the same ingredients on the bottle of ear oitment he has been receiving from the vet

Try olive oil then, if their are mite s they olive oil will drown them

It seems to start with a flea allergy, goes into hot spots, then darkening smelly patches usually under forearm area and neck creases. I feed her enzyme rich food.(Eagle Pack) Have tried adding yogurt to her diet and tried many skin remedies for the intense itching.

My dog has major allergies as well and gets that stupid yeast infection in her ears all the time. Cortisone shots seem to help but that can get expensive. I give my dog benadryl and that works great, simply sleep has the exact same ingredients and sometimes is cheaper. No need to go with the name brands the cheap stuff works just as well. It makes her a little sleepy sometimes and other times she gets wound up. I put a little peanut butter on a cracker and stick the pill in the peanut butter. Also for her skin I use an oatmeal shampoo and when she is still a little damp I rub cocoa butter with shea butter lotion into her coat and skin. She absolutely loves this routine and likes the rub down with the lotion. At first she tried to eat it all off but then discovered she felt so much better with it in her skin. Good luck.
