Question by Lucy: Can’t get rid of yeast infection in my dog’s ears?
I have a black lab/border collie mix, he constantly has infection in his ears, I clean them use the medicine and wash and have had them flushed twice which can get expensive. The vet said it is common in this type of dog and it could be allergy too, which I think so because he has really itchy dry skin on his back. I just don’t know what to do to help him, should I change his food? I have been to two vets they both just say to give benedryl. But it doesn’t really work, and I feel bad for him scratching at himself all the time.
The ear medication I used was called Mometemax drops and also used a cream, I cant remember the name but it was in a pale green tube. Also use Oti Calm cleansing solution.

Wow – that sounds like a lot of maintenance and a big hassle and also sounds uncomfortable for your pup. If I were you, I would call other vets. Any vet that isn’t willing to get to the CAUSE of the problem and just wants to medicate so it makes it seem like there isn’t a problem isn’t worth my money. I am all for medicine, when appropriate, but allergies and yeast infections should be able to be managed in other ways (or at least attmpted!!).

If he has really itchy dry skin, it could be allergies. Check your food – if it has wheat, wheat gluten, corn, or soy – get a new food. Avoderm makes an allergy formula, as does Natural balance, Canidae, Timberwolf, Innova, and Wellness are some upper brands that do cost a bit more but that do not contain wheat or corn. Oftentimes yeast infections result because the area is very moist. So make sure you use the appropriate ear cleaner. Keep him out of water. You can also try “flipping” his ears inside out after you clean them to facilitate drying. They’ll usually stay that way for a few minutes before they flip them back. I do that with my labs after bathtime – and then I call them Princess Leia – but it helps with drying . . .

And definitely investigate other vets – ones that are interested in finding the REASON for the problems as opposed to just trying to cover up the reaction with meds.

Allergies or Yeast infection in my English Bulldog?

Question by lindgyle: Allergies or Yeast infection in my English Bulldog?
I rescue this english bulldog about a week ago she was in bad shape. The people had her had trade her to a pitt bull to this guy, and he keep her 4 days and then post her up to sale. I went and look at her and of course she look so bad i just couldn’t leave her in the shape she was in, so i brought her and the price i gave for her i could of brought a new healthy pup , but i just couldn’t leave her with those sad eyes saying help me. So i brought her home and right off she went to sliding her but across the floor and like humping things and scratching , she never stop the whole night so i got up at 300 am and gave her a really good bath , her tits was red and she had like a rash on her belly and between her tits you can see she has had several litter of pups so i guessing she was use just for a breed dog. i use to work for a vet when i was young while i was in nursing school so i knew a little that she had some type of infection so i took her to the vet and she gave her some yeast infection medical and said that is why she was biting at her paws and why her stomach was broke out. I went and brought her some 5 star dog food, she also gave her a shampoo that i was to bath her twice a week, and some ear medicine. and gave some medicated wipes for her folds. and advice me to give her 50 mg of bendryl a day. so i have done every thing i was told to do for her its been a week and i have not seen no change in her i call the vet today and she told me that it really hadn’t had time to work. I so worried about her. anyone know anything else i might could do for her. any advice would be greatly appericate.

I think you are doing everything you can. Keep in touch with your vet and look for English Bulldog groups online.

Question by crzycoookies: To those who had a dog with severe malassezia pachydermatis(Skin yeast infection..)?
When my vet said my dog had flea allergies, she also said that he had a yeast infection, though didn’t help me out much with what to give him. She just said antifungal meds.. Is there any kind of human pills that can help, and maybe shampoo? I’ve read that there are certain things that help, but I’ve only been able to find it in a brand of dandruff shampoo. I can’t use creams because he’s got it damn near all over his body. So, any one got some suggestions for shampoo and oral medications? I know of one little ’set’ I can buy online, but I can’t afford that.

My Basset Hound has this problem. His vet isn’t sure exactly what he’s allergic to, but it does only occur in the summer months. When Woody (My Basset Hound) gets a skin infection, we give him some Human benedryl. You will need to run this by your vet though, because you can’t give your dog too much, it goes based on the size of the dog. But Benedryl has really helped Woody. Also he gets a cream from the vet.

The only way is to have her allergy tested. It gives a very effective diagnosis these days but it’s not cheap.
